It's amazing how much knowledge on science and architecture you shared without it becoming boring. I do have a question though, in a case where the house has already been completed then I plan for a somewhat cosmetic job of adding a balcony to the masters bedroom. While going for cantilever, is it safe to merge the new concrete to the old already finished building?

Hey Milos, I want to thank you. Recently i quit my job at an MEP drafting office. I wasn't feeling it anymore and it wasn't for what I studied, i studied civil engineering. While I recently failed my bachelors study, i was able to get an associate degree and going back into the CE world. The things you talk about, automatisation and parametric design really got me thinking. So, I am applying from entry level jobs to restart my engineering passion. And taking some extra courses on revit, dynamo and rhino. Thank you, man, glad I came by your video's again.

Do you have any information for steel framed cantilever balconies with metal decking rather than the concrete? We are building a steel building and want a cantilever deck and want to know the maximum size we can extend from the main building.

We have taken 5 feet cantilever in staircase for midlanding with column ,column size 6 inch×21 inches and cantilever beam also 6 inches × 21 inches. Is it Corect ?or can we suport cantilever ?please reply. Thanks for nice information.

I didn't get one thing, what problem would happen if the steel rebar is in the low part of the cantilever which is supported by cantilever?

You really need to visualise this one. The balcony is fixed on only one end and will start to tear from upper side, where we will stand. Once the column is set it becomes supported at both sides and now will break from bottom. But i have always seen bars forming cubical grids covering everything 😅...may be there diameters are different

Hi I have a question, can you pour cement on the interior part first, let it dry, then pour cement on the balcony part? Hope someone answers. 🙏

I wanted to understand how to cantilever a roof of a carport, but I think, based on your explanation, that I am the cantilever type with anger management issues. Is that a sub category?

Sorry for commenting. I just want to clarify the engineering aspect of the video as some might take it wrongly. Good analogy for already built houses but there are misonceptions about the loading patterns as bending moment is just one of the failure modes in structutes. If these are already built houses, the logic is plausible since the design of the tension of the beam is at the top. However, putting a column will not be counter intuitive if it is placed correctly(Tension@bottom safely carried by the concrete) as the moments and deflections on certain points will be decreased. Still a risk though a little bit of added external reinforcement at the top of the beam will help a ton This is a different scenario if the building is still in design tho. If such vibrations and deflections are calculated correctly with the degradation of the beam in mind. The engineer should already think of the maintenance methods if such worst case scenario happen.

depends on material / material science. this was a perfect explanation for steel-reinforced concrete. typical wood framing would be a different story.

I used to think in terms of "plant people" and "animal people." Synonymous and physics is more basic so it (I predict) wins.

There are two types of people - the self-mutilators with tattoos and body piercings, and those without. While the self-mutilators may think they are the wild ones, the risk-takers; the non-self-mutilators are the ones who do not need such 'support columns' for they have self confidence and inner strength.

Criticizing, looking down on someone to produce superficial feelings of superiority, is not indicative of inner strength. The fact that you feel the need indicates the opposite.
