About This Video: If you are lost and wondering what career to choose, I hope you can find in optometry what I have found, but that being said, optometry school is not for everyone. Some people should go to medical school or another healthcare career. Other people should rethink their careers entirely! Optometry School is a great option, but hopefully some will reconsider.

Don’t worry! You get a lot of practice communicating in low-stakes situations, so it becomes a skill that you can develop! You’ve got this!

I used to struggle with this as well! I recommend working as an optometric tech for a while so you can get a feel for the field and learn to communicate with patients 😁 It completely got rid of my fear of public speaking. You've got this!
Optometrist and civil engineer, who makes a better money? Because I'm after the money😂
So I chose it because it's a job that wont impede my health(initially predent but many of the dentists I shadowed had back and neck pain), has a decent income, good hours usually(trying to avoid wknd workdays), and a generally chill job. Do you think that's ok because I honestly don't exactly have a passion to work in a dream job, just to live a good comfy life which I feel like optometry can provide based on the 3 optometrists I've shadowed in retail chain, an md/od practice and a hospital setting. I've graduated with a bio BA (3.7gpa) and currently preparing for OAT. I've also scribed in an ER for about a month and just didnt like that type of setting or care and ophthalmology is not a guaranteed choice so I have picked optometry where eye care is the end result It's just the atrocious loans that scare me 😔

I think that is fine and you’ll still be a great doctor, but I would come up with something a bit more substantial to put into your personal statement and have it ready for interviews as well

@@joshreese_optometry @Josh Reese Oh yes, the personal statement would be fleshed out to appeal myself to the committee, i'm not gonna say, "I dont dream to work" lmao (unless👀). I'm just asking anonymously on the internet here because I had to take a gap year since I was by default, a premed and realized I didn't want to do that and have a bio degree. I'm conflicted about if these instinctive reasons are ok to pursue the field or am I gonna regret picking this career for seeking a low stress life with good leisure time & good money (hopefully get into a $125k+ and up, somewhere nice like a suburb). All of which just requires generally pleasant interactions with people (aside from telling some that they have a dz) and work which I believe would not be too hard to leave me mentally or physically exhausted after the average workday from what I've observed from ODs. Also I've thought about private practice down the line, but from what I've heard about retail corporate chains, online retailers, issues with insurance underpaying (the older dentist I shadowed villainized the crap out of them and I'd guess its probably similar in the optometry world), it does feel like buying a practice may not be lucrative anymore so I would probably be an associate for life which also sounds weird because there is no "promotion" in healthcare as a system since you're basically already maxed out Just these thoughts swirl around my mind time to time as I drag myself through OAT prep in addition to the eventual ~ 260k student debt which throws me into a depressive state when I think about it.
Hi Josh! Love the video. I am an ophthalmologist and optometrist in China, and now I want to study OD program in the US, can I find a job easily after I finish the OD program.

Josh, how about inferiority complex? I think most optometrist working with ophthalmologist have that kind of feeling.
