I think the mistake people make is following the typical advice that the stronger paddler goes in back. In reality, the more patient paddler needs to be in the back, at least until both people have experience and know how to work together. The rear paddler follows the front paddler's lead, even if they're doing something poorly. If they forward sweep to turn, you forward sweep to turn. Don't get fancy and try to do reverse sweeps to spin more quickly. Just follow their lead and match their strokes. This includes paddling inefficiently and even cutting your strokes short to match theirs because otherwise, you're going to end up causing the boat to do things the front paddler doesn't expect. The only exception is if you need to avoid danger, but you shouldn't really be paddling a tandem kayak with an inexperienced paddler anywhere that getting into real trouble is even remotely possible. The way I like to put it is like this: did you learn to kayak with someone sitting over your shoulder telling you that you're doing it wrong? Probably not, and there's no reason to subject your kayaking partner to that. Let them make their mistakes, paddle in a way that leaves them feeling in control, and don't get frustrated if they're not doing things the right way. Correct dangerous behaviors, but otherwise, just have some fun on the water together.

Obviously tandem kayaks don’t work for this guy. But telling people in such a dramatic fashion don’t buy a tandem kayak based on your personal experience is completely biased, and uninformed. Instead try presenting facts and your experience without bias and let the buyer decide what’s right for them and their family. As there are several quality tandem kayaks out there that many people greatly enjoy. The comments here alone tell that story. For those considering a tandem, there are several that have great reviews. Just do your research and decide whether a tandem or multiple single kayaks are best for you and your family. You may find you like one particular brand or design over another, so looking around is always best. I personally like the Crew from Crescent Kayaks myself. Very versatile open design with great performance in tandem or solo. Best of luck,

Some good points regarding a child paddling in front usually against parent in the back. Ive spent the last 2 seasons modding it for one angler with room for gear. Trolling motor and a trailer to pull it with now. Working on lights and seat upgrades.! I'll probably do a video if I ever finish it! lol!

Fair enough on the recommendations, but those tandem kayaks you mentioned are 1/4 or 1/3rd the price of a Lure 2. It isn't too hard to communicate and not hit each other whilst paddling, usually my girlfriend and I take turns to paddle and the other will just steer by paddle from the back 👍

I bought a pelican tandem for my wife and I. She developed skin cancer. She's fine. But doesn't want to be in sun in a kayak now. Well I found that if I make my seat the front one. Use a square milf crate put on the storage deck in the very back. Then I use rocks for counter weight to my front seat weight. Then I'm able to bring a cooler, all my rods, tackle bag, a tent, and whatever I want. And if you purchase a nice outrigger set you can get up and walk around.

The problem we have is that in our lake you can’t use motors (not even electric). Do you think that is a problem to paddle solo on a tandem kayak even if it’s one those simper one (around 75 pounds)? The fun thing is that your video covered and destroyed every single idea that I had…😂

Not familiar with it but looking at photos you can definitely add a rear plate to flatten the area and add the nk300 you can slap it right where the handles are, add some backing plates using the hatch. Then you can set up a foot steering or hand steering. Lots of work , it will go 6.1-6.5 mph

There’s a lot of things the main paddler in the back can do that really makes the paddling of the front individual pointless. Me and my girlfriend go out on my Brooklyn with my som and she’ll be paddling and I can still steer and control the kayak just fine as she continues to paddle. Along with telling her hey we’re making a sharp turn or something. I do understand with kids as the front paddlers it is hard to coordinate due to the lack of strength compared to the parent or larger person in the back. I also feel ocean kayaks themselves unless it is the angler series even if that, are made for Rec use and just having a good time on the water. I own both a ocean kayak and Brooklyn company and I feel both of them have very different uses and feels when being used.

Coordinate paddling together. At first the person in back should call out the strokes "Left, right, left, right". After about a minute of rhythm conditioning, person in back coordinates speed with person in front because they can see them. As long as person in front doesn't break 1 left and 1 right sequence, there is no reason to hit each other. Also, being spread apart helps. Wife and I paddle 8-10kms per day in open ocean Greece and have never hit paddles once. She knows I'm watching her from behind, so she knows as long as she follows L,R,L,R I will match her stroke and speed. Difference between amateur and pro is a little practice. Coordinated paddles have double the power so double the distance in half the time. You don't have to pay attention to coordination after a while. It becomes second nature allowing you to enjoy gliding over the water for hours at a time almost euphoric feeling. Any couple can master it. Addictive hobby when done right. Check the weather forecast before heading out. We take cooler with food and water and picnic on the water. Take a cell phone in water proof pouch for gps and emergencies. Always keep land within site. Water turns choppy? Head back inland. Take frequent, scheduled breaks. Plan your trip. Kayaking trips are super fun once you get the coordination and planning right. After 12 years of kayaking with the wife our marriage is unsinkable.

Great content as always. That's the problem with these Kayaks. They only hold mostly one person. The materials are low cost but they don't give you much for the money. They say success comes when you see a problem & develop a solution. The Big fish 108 is the new benchmark for entry-level kayaks but they need to make it a little longer sleeker. The industry also needs to decide on only two types of pedal drives low/ top end.

The very first time my wife and I kayaked we were on a tandem. It's like a cannon the heaviest person goes in the rear and is in charge of steering, and coordinates their strokes with the person in the front. It's really not that hard. If a couple can't paddle a kayak together without fighting they probably have bigger issues to deal with in their relationship. 🤷

If I sit in the back, I paddle to compensate my partner in the front. Add power to my stroke or paddle in the opposite side . Or I choose any position, front or back and I would be the only one to paddle. It's really not that difficult and frustrating that you dramatize it to be.

If you can't coordinate something as simple as paddling together then your communication is lacking anyways. I bought a tandem because my wife is not enthusiastic about paddling. It saves me the trouble of having to wait for her and her feeling like she's too slow. By calling out directions we stay in unison and and she can rest when she wants. We kayak in Oahu where there are more waves.

Envoy tandem kayat 106 DONT BUY, BIG HEADACHE I bought this kayat for my grandson and me to enjoy getting on the water. It has been a disaster since we bpought it and it has resulted in terrible experiences with my grandson. Cons: seats are bad, tolerate no more than 20 minutes no places for rod holders unable to place adaptations(seats, rod holders, motor mount). You cannot attach bolts to the top of the kayat to place attachments onto kayat,) The company has poor service, spent 3 hours contacting the company and they were no help in resolving anything Super heavy(75 lbs), need large truck to transport. Unable to drill into kayat per company or you lose your warranty Cost about 200.00 to ship back to company Pro's: You have 30 days to try it and return it to Walmart (my truck was in repair so I had to wait past the 30 day limit and unable to return kayat) Cheap but unable to use Reply
