Excellent review. I must point out that imo a turntable that does not have automatic features is not a disadvantage. The only thing that matters in a turntable is the sound quality, the speed stability and the build quality. Everything else is personal taste. And yet i completely agree with you: This turntable has neither the look or sound and its price is simply expensive for what you get. A $149 at best.

Have to agree. I don't have anything high end. But I do have a Technics P-mount quartz lock Direct Drive, fully automatic with repeat functions that seems to be indestructable. I doubt I paid more than a little over $125 for it. I also have a Dual I got for free and had to put $75 in repairs into it. Both are better than this. Then again vinyl is NOT my primary medium. But I do spin a few LPs now and then. I also gave my daughter an old Realistic LAB belt drive with their R47 EDT cart. Certainly a respectable cartridge-good enough for most uses. Also bought her the Schiit phono pre-amp-pretty good for the price. I just don't understand why it is so difficult for current manufacturers to reproduce those '70 and early '80s tables-match their specs, durability and performance at a reasonable price.

This one is one step up than the Lp60. It does have an automatic version and the old version even have MC pre-amp. That said, for the price one should get a LP120 or cough up another 100 or so and get a LP 140. Not quite a Technics but very darn close. I like my Fluance since they feel a bit more organic. Although I do enjoy my old Technics linear tracking. Denon also has some good vintage deck but they are harder to fix when they break down, but they are aesthetically pleasing

Its a sign of the times. In the seventies you got good quality for less then half the price. Now you get nice looking junk.

i'm surprised, AT turn out some excellent cartridges, though you really need to spend at least £1,000 for a decent turntable.

Audio-technica turntables are made in China by HANPIN to Audio-technica designs, Audio-technica cartridges are made by Audio-technica in Japan since 1962 to exacting standards and are respected by audiophile and hobbyists the world over. There are the lower level vm series carts made in China but these aren't made by hanpin. It's only in more recent years Audio-technica have put their name to these turntables, Audio-technica also renowned for the manufacture of microphones.

@@peterstudley1804 got my first AT mc cartridge in late 80s? Never looked back, excellent cartridge.

Reason fully manual is to eliminate all unnecessary forces on the stylus. Provides better channel separation, and allows you to useless less weight to accurately track the groove without skipping. Thus, also reduces wear on the record itself. HOWEVER, instead of using micro switch, they could have used an optical switch to detect both start and ending. This wouldn't have added a single mN of force to the stylus. AND, at $400 they should have.

Sorry I can’t stand manual turntables . I grew up with records, I’m 48 and love records but not fussing with them give me a bsr stacker over something like this any day

Then please don’t review Debut carbons or Rega Planars. Those are truly outrageously expensive TT for what they are. 😄

First, this turntable is not made by Audio Technica. AT gives them the specs and it is manufactured in China. AT markets this turntable to people who don't know what a good turntable should and to compete with other brands of turntables. A turntable shouldn't impart effects or characteristics. It's job is to play records the way they were meant to be heard. Pre-amps. A pre-amp should be neutral. All pre-amps are different and will modify the sound in it's prescribed manner. Therefore, it will modify the signal away from the way it was intended to be heard. Everything and component affects sound. If you want to hear something as it was intended to be heard, then use the equipment those who make the records we buy use. A popular turntable is the Technics SL-1200 series(or it's clones) and a Shure M97xe cartridge using an original Shure stylus. Check the videos these companies have provided on their websites.

Putting speakers on same surface was probably a factor, but a hollow build would also do that. Vinyl is terrible anyway and made worse with small production runs. Go digital and leave this garbage behind. Used to use technics 1210s in loud clubs and needed isolation to stop feedback. Why bother with anything but mass production old stock if you want this stuff
