Do not be afraid of organic chemistry. | Jakob Magolan | TEDxUIdaho

Organic chemistry, like many subjects in science, is percieved to be hard. Scientists are assumed to be unfriendly super smart people who speak a foreign language. However, what if you could learn any 'hard' science in 15 minutes or less? In this talk, Jakob Magolan breaks the stereotype and teaches the basics of organic chemistry in 15 minutes. Jakob received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Western University in Canada. After three years of postdoctoral research at the Eskitis Institute for Drug Discovery in Australia, he joined the chemistry faculty at the University of Idaho where he teaches organic chemistry and runs a research program focused on organic synthetic methods and drug discovery. Jakob was recently granted tenure and has received awards in recognition of his research, teaching, and mentorship of students. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    I have such love for this science which made the class even more discouraging not because it was hard, but because there was a large amount of thoughts/ideas without the proper depth of explanation. O-Chem 1 literally dips your toe into the real world of chemistry with expectations to know less and memorize more. The entire semester I found myself asking, "yeah.... but why??" with answers along the lines of, "you'll learn that later". This lead to a consistant 77-78% in the class with exams that I felt as if I was being asked complex questions with provided generalized information. I am an analytical thinker and could care less for memorization because memorization and comprehension are not equal. I am not paying tuition to memorize, I am paying tuition to LEARN.

  • @kevinfarrell3324

    @kevinfarrell3324

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yea a lot of memorization is needed, but is required to "learn" why some things happen. For any STEM class, it is important to not only know how to do something, but what is actually happening. So its not the case of knowing less and memorizing more, succeeding in any STEM class requires both and you will probably not do well if you don't have both.

    As someone that is studying organic chemistry as a graduate student, I appreciate how he takes a step back to realize how much this field is so integrated into a lot of different aspects. I think one thing that scares students off to organic chemistry is that it's a different mindset of understanding this field. In organic chemistry, you learn the reactions and core concepts, but to implement those you need to think in a more critical thinking perspective. I believe that's what makes this class so scary for those that have to take it if they are pre-med, because they are used to regurgitating information but that doesn't fly in organic chemistry.

    Don't. Literally the worst class I took in college with the worst teachers with bad english on top. Oh and how often do medical students use organic chemistry? Oh they don't in the way they teach it. That's the problem. "if this is how O Chem were taught, people wouldn't be scared of it. This is now how it's taught nor what it's like to experience O Chem as a student. Everyone knows O Chem is amazing as a subject, but how it's taught is the problem and he's not addressing that issue in this video."

    i feel like courses like this really need a great professor like this. my professor is okay but she's not doing the best job. a lot of chemistry I'm having to learn by myself (as im sure most people have had to do as well). explaining in this simple of a way is so much less intimidating. I also feel like when you don't understand it, you get discouraged and want to drop the class. I really hope I pass my class

    I'm about to take the second semester of ochem, for the 6th time. Every time I take it I spend ~6 hours a day on it, only to fail the tests. I go to office hours, email professors, do okay on the homeworks... just fail the tests. I've passed every other class in my major, but can't graduate because of this 200 level entry course. I actually like the material too, it's interesting stuff. I just wish I knew how to learn it. Thinking about having to take it AGAIN though makes me want to cry because it makes me feel like a failure.

    Very inspiring, reminds me of a friend who quit industry for awhile to teach at his alma mata. Totally enthusiastic, dedicated and commited, a brilliant synthesis. He became totally despondent after 4 years. You either "get/love chemistry" ,or the most part. you don't. I'm not saying you can't do well,,,,,BUT...you either love it or you don't.

    This natural Vs synthetic argument should be really emphasized in the general consciousness. Just because something's made in a lab doesn't mean it's bad, likewise just because something's natural doesn't mean it's safe
