    Very good video - even if I’m a little late in getting to it. I’m very pleasantly surprised that your idea is so efficient at picking up dust and chips. What I particularly admire is the simplicity of the design. Simplicity, flexibility, economic and efficiency- the 4 targets for any design. Exactly what I would like for my lathe. Thank you

    Thanks for Sharing your design. I spent the evening in the shop building my version. I already owned a dust hood that I had previously purchased so I just had to modify the vertical portion of your design to accept the dust hood. Turned a quick bottle stopper and was pleased to to see how well it did with both wood chips and sanding dust.

    Congratulations on a very ingenious device. I did incorporate a couple of what I consider innovations. First, I slotted the "teardrop' using a table mounted router. This could also be done using the band saw, jig saw or dado blade. I glued a spacer at the bottom for stability. I then drilled and attached a hanger bolt to the rear of the banjo and attaching a knob similar to the one you used, thus allowing vertical movement of the dust collector nozzle. Secondly, instead of using two set screws to hold the vacuum nozzle, I drilled and tapped the top of the "teardrop" and used a single thumb knob with attached machine screw. This allowed easier access and requires no tools for removal or adjustment of the nozzle. Lastly, for the circular lock down, I countersunk for the bolt's hex head and simply drove the hex head into the wood thus locking it in place. I may have to epoxy it in place down the road but I doubt it. Thanks, George, I don't think I would have ever thought of "duplicating" the banjo for dust collection.

    Great design initiative!In future though, you've probably already foreseen the use of a wing nut in place of that "t" knob...and, you're going to be stuck for elevating or lowering the collection nozzle, with the "tear-drop" design...but a genuine note of thanks for taking the thought to share!

    Great Idea!!! I will make one for my lathe. One suggestion: Why not use a large fender washer under the black knob that you bought at the hardware store? It seems to me just having the knob would eventually mar up the wood and the washer providing a larger clamping area. Just a thought to better a great idea!!!

    Wonderful idea! I made the second one, but when turning pen blanks, the space is so narrow the tool rest banjo and the dust collector banjo won't both fit. I made two banjos similar to yours, one on each end of the lathe with a slotted board between. The slot allows the funnel holder board to slide side-to-side. I can move the dust collection funnel closer or farther and side-to side. Works great!

    Grant thank you for the nice comments. I do not have a later edition. I have found that I don't use my lathe often but when I do, I simply lay a 6" diameter hose from my shop vacuum system near my lathe and it does an adequate job. The one I demonstrated was excellent at removing dust but the shop vac I used for it was extremely loud.

    In the last 6 years I have changed lathes and locations so I made a different holder. It is made from 2x4 sections that are jointed coming out from my garage 2x4 stud. At each joint a bolt and locking wing nut holds the joint in place (much like you elbow). The one I show you in the video worked very well and never had an issue. • @gfotinakes316

    @gfotinakes316

    7 жыл бұрын

    This works fine for any particles shot back into the opening. Anything thrown forward is not going into the vacuum. I am more concerned with fine sanding dust causing possible lung damage so I position my sanding so virtually all the dust is trapped... larger chips are easily swept or vacuumed up after my work is done. I hope this helps.

    You could do better. Why you didn't offset vertical part with hole to the right from horizontal holder? Also, thin metal support bracket between parts could be much stronger than piece of wood. Why I say about shift? Because you need your funnel right behind lathe hand helper (I don't know right name of this part), where you work, and it has its own support. Also (3rd), you could make bottom washer with slots, so it couldn't rotate, and you can bind vent holder with one hand.
