Do independent schools foster sporting greatness? Danny Grewcock (Director of Sport, Oundle School)

What is a successful sports programme? Breadth and depth with opportunity or winning? 7% of the UK population are in independent education, yet a significant proportion of British olympians, rugby premiership players and others are independently educated. So do independent schools nurture and develop this, or would these people become elite sportsmen and women whatever their educational environment? Also what about sport for those who are not in the A teams?
Danny Grewcock has been Director of Sport at Oundle School since September 2016. An elite rugby player, he played for England 69 times over a 10 year international career and in 5 tests for the British and Irish Lions on tours in 2001 and 2005.
After retiring from professional rugby, Danny became the Bath Academy Directory - a club for which he had previously made 229 first team appearances.
David Faulkner is the Head of Women’s Performance at The Football Association. He joined Millfield School in 2013 as the Director of Sport and a member for the SMT.
David held the position of Performance Director of England and Great Britain Hockey from 2005 to 2012. He was also directly accountable for successfully implementing of the vision and strategy for performance hockey, talent development and coaching in England and GB. During his tenure England men and women climbed from 11th to 4th in the world rankings by 2012.
