I'm 41 and dress kawaii. People often confuse me for someone in their twenties, anyway but even if I looked my age I think it would still be ok to dress youthfully. Do what makes you feel good!

I wore NOTHING BUT LOLITA for middle school and got terribly bullied, so I gave into fear and stopped for high school. I may have looked like everyone else in high school but that didn't make me friends, it didn't stop me from getting picked on all it did was make me depressed because I was wearing fashion that I didn't feel pretty in. I didn't feel like my true self therefore I couldn't BE my true self. When I got married at 19 my husband came across Lolita fashion and bought me a dress. This made me confess to him that I used to wear this fashion ALL the time and that I missed it. SO I BOUIGHT LOLITA AGAIN. I'm 31 years old today as I write this, I have a 10 year old daughter, I'm a teacher and I have been wearing lolita fashion ATLEAST 4 TIMES A WEEK even to the grocery store, walking the dog, parent meet ups ect. I get weird looks, some ppl don't want to be near me but MOST PEOPLE LOVE THAT I LOOK PRETTY. 90% of the time I'm complemented and maybe asked why I'm wearing a wig or a "fancy outfit" I have had a few close friends confess to me that my being "dressed up" makes them feel terrible about themselves and their own appearance. Basically that sums up the whole being scared to wear a fashion that you love because you are aging. I struggled with this a few years back when I wore nothing but Sweet Lolita I am 4 foot 11 and because of health issues I look like Tinkerbell. When I wear Sweet I look like my daughters sister and can get the free meals from the kiddy menu. This bothered me ALOT in 2019. I hit a low point I felt like I was failing my daughter by wearing Sweet everywhere and being mistaking for a child. But I LOVED WEARING PINK. So once again I stopped wearing something to please another and once again I fell into depression. Long story short I had to deal with being a mom and wearing the fashion and I did. It took my daughter asking me to twin Sweet Lolita with her to an art gallery to realize I was being STUPID. I love wearing Sweet, my kid doesn't care if I do, my husband loves me no matter what I wear so why was I so concerned about what people outside of my close knit group felt? Wear what makes you feel happy in. (As long as you wear something!) in the end your mental health is more important than other peoples thoughts of you. Also, I bet you look amazing in your coords.

Honestly, I see lolita working for any age! Like even a grandma would look perfectly fine in it.

i left lolita and had sold all of my dresses. and the two dresses i regret selling most are the candy sprinkle jsk in pink and my fancy paper dolls special set jsk in lavender...so my dream dresses currently are both of those since i’m officially getting back into lolita. and i hope one day: those dresses will find their way back to me again!! 🥺💗✨

You are never too old for lolita! I'm in my mid 40s and only got into it when i took a month long work trip to Japan 2 yrs ago! :)

I love how much lolitas cherish and care for their garments! I wish we would all carefully plan our purchases, make sure we really want the clothes and will wear them... and when it's time send them off to a new home. Admirable in my opinion! 💖

Ugh that negative association, tumblr ruined certain sweet motifs for me that's why so many sweet prints are so difficult for me to buy. One day I'll get over it too!!

My "dream dresses" don't really exist. Like I see dresses that are cute and I like, but I don't feel the burning need to own them really. Most things that I *do* feel like that for don't exist, so I'm working on making my own prints so I can make them myself! Though I hope lily of the valley does do the rerelease of the unicorn forest dress she mentioned a while ago!

Same here, I was a teenie-weenie 14yr-old when I started searching for lacy/longer skirts and found lolita.. But the cupcake shape never really tugged on my heartstrings... There are definitely some darker or Victorian-ish lolita pieces I would wear proudly but I'm definitely not lolita myself.. Still, I like Lor and people who talk passionately about their interests, that's why I keep coming back xD

I'm going to school to be a fashion historian and I've always viewed history as a puzzle, so it's super important for me to get all the pieces, and as we all know there's nothing like a primary source. Our clothes show us who we are, and I think even subcultures are going to be so important to understanding our world someday. Plus there's something just...so tangible about clothes. You feel a connection be it the piece is centuries old or just a few hours. There's something special about those divers and the work that goes into putting it all together.

@@cozymoggele sewing my own sets doesn't fully slate the hunger for professional ones :'3 i can spend a few hundred dollars on material and time, and it still won't look like the highly detailed Princess Chronicles sets I long for. It's definitely the main way I can participate in the fashion, but that doesn't mean it' s a 1 to 1 replacement for ready-to-buy stuff ♥️

My The dream dress was the yellow honey cake, I don't think I would've worn it back in the day when I wanted it, nor would I wear it now. But seeing it makes me feel very happy still, such a cute print 🥞 Nowadays I'm those hunter lolitas (I've gotten all my dream pieces for now) I help out my friends and comm since I love eyeing Japanese secondhand sites 😊

My dream dress is Wrapping Heart in yellow. I was lucky enough to get a dream dress within a week and a half of starting on my journey; Cotton Candy Shop in lavender~

Otome Nostalgia is actually a dream dress of mine, I was so bummed when I learned it sold out on their site since I currently don't have the funds for it. Also I want Horror Candy Shop in the red jsk, it's so cute and basically I want every Angelic Pretty halloween print

I love how you add in definitions and examples for people who are new to the fashion. Simple, quick, and leaves everyone informed without them feeling like idiots.

I FINALLY got to order my dream dress that has been my dream since 2009. AP Sugary Carnival JSK in lavender. I tried to buy it when it first dropped but my little fingers just weren’t fast enough.😢 After that, I was never in the right place at the right time with the right amount of money. So when a friend tagged me in the new rerelease post, I jumped on that.

I actually ordered my first Lolita Dress and it was my dream dress. It came in this week and honestly I couldn't be more in love with a dress that I am with mine. It's called Forest Deer Lolita Set Overall Dress by To Alice. I ordered the blouse, shoes and head scarf hood as well because I was obsessed with the whole coord. It looks absolutely phenomenal and I just can't expression how much love I have for the whole set. I can't wait to get another dress when I have the money again.

"Veil of tears" might not be the name of the dress but its such a pretty phrase

Just gotta say, that wig is PERFECT with Otome Nostalgia! I love how you paired the pink OP with the red bow. It's such a versatile print~ Dream dresses are so complicated for me rofl. My younger self and my current self aren't so different but I'm less optimistic about fit/making something work than I was back then, and what I like looking at is sometimes different from what I enjoy wearing. I've always wanted Milky Planet, but I would buy BtSSB's Secret Garden set before it because I'd wear it more, even though I have more sweet accessories. Your "guidelines" are super helpful too. It's important to contextualize why you want something, how you'd wear it, and whether your desire for it now is just due to nostalgia or like, fashion adrenaline lol. No shame in admitting that a dream dress isn't what you expected either! Side note but the AIM sounds as transitions are sending me straight back to my teen years, thank you.

I recently got a dream dress of mine: Chocolate Chess JSK 1 in the Brown colorway. I love it despite it being a decade later and am so happy it's now in my closet~!

Congrats on leaving FB. I did that this year, too. Also I'm glad others do Lolita clown looks. I've been a professional clown since 2006 and I use a lot of Lolita pieces and elements in my costumes. Even my pirate costume that I made is from a Lolita pattern. It works well because a lot of people are afraid of clowns so I figured Lolita was less threatening.

I've been looking for that dress for so long as well, and a few years back I actually found it but back then our countrie's teeny-tiny lolita community completely dissolved and I didn't want to pay a significant amount of money for a dress I wouldn't have any event to wear to...needless to say I deeply regret not buying it :'D

My dream dress is the special set OP of Daydream Bed, even though I know it won't fit my shoulders xD I'd have it tailored into a JSK or a skirt, since people in my local comm know of some good tailors they've used for lolita in the area.

This was a very thought provoking video! I think I have many dresses that I love but my dream dresses aren’t in my size so I’m constantly looking for something similar to fill the void. I hope to shake that bad habit and instead focus on what I do have right now. I think sometimes when we’re obsessing over the next dress, we lose track of the other things in life. Most of the dresses I've come across that might've been dream dress material for me, aren't made in plus sizes or don't go big enough for me, so there's not much point in wanting them! Because I basically can only get custom sized dresses, I don't really feel like I can participate in the culture of dream dresses which is kind of a bummer. But in some ways it feels nice to not have a dress to pine over, makes the fashion more chill to me! I like hearing about other peoples' though, it's cool how diverse everyone's tastes are in this fashion!

My ultimate dream dress right now is Twinkle Mermaid in sax and I would love to own the Carnival OP in sax x pink, however most of my dream dresses are rare so it's likely that I won't own them or will own other cuts/colorways.
