Do I Regret My Anthropology Major? Things I Would Have Done Differently As An Anthro Major At UCLA
In this weeks video, I will be sharing some of the top four things that I would have done differently as an anthropology major. A common question that I hear floating around is whether or not the anthropology major is worth it-in this video, I will be answering this question as well as telling you some things that I think you should do if you decide to major in anthropology.
Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am currently an undergraduate Anthropology student at UCLA on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. As an Anthropology / Social Science graduate, I went back to Community College and got a certificate in Real Estate. Took the local County Government test for Appraiser. Retired 20 years later with a great retirement.

I am at the end of my freshman year at UNC Charlotte and it turns out I accidentally did like half of these but I also did have a breakdown over what skills I should have 😎 I really enjoy this major and it’s definitely something I am sticking with due to both personal interest and also a somewhat of an idea of what I’m doing in the future, but overall I really liked your tips. I will definitely look into real-world courses because I lack a lot of those things

Im a similar situation to you, looking at bio anth and archeology positions online and realizing man, that cultural anthropology upper division I required to take means nothing in the real world with all these hard skills companies are rightfully looking for. Most of the time I see the required skills and can't even be mad when the want field school experience, survey, or GIS because those are very useful, I just for any number of reasons dont have those skills. Frankly, I also thought that the people at UCLA were much less classist than at UW - Madison. I had already taken calculus and biology at the college level before going to college. I also tried learning some coding after I graduated.
Re: your coding recommendation, I've been told the same about learning GIS. This is specifically related to environmental anthropology, but it was a great suggestion. I love the idea of diversifying your interests, it'd be nice to have a doc of suggestions for each subfield, a lot of us don't realize how many options there are within the field.
