    For me, the aged condition of the tapes actually adds something to the movie. Horror movies are a big step scarier and creepier with degraded audio and video. Makes it harder to see who's coming out to get you! Aged tapes have personality.

    5:55 Sorry you are completely wrong when it comes to vinyl records. A clean, well-kept (or new) vinyl doesn't pop or crackle. In terms of quality it's rather comparable to a 35mm film print rather than a vhs. It's simply two different things, I understand why people collect vhs, but with vinyl it's indeed the phenomenal sound quality they deliver.

    Amen, brother. I'm exactly the same way. Yeah, I have a lot of nostalgic affection for the vhs format itself, and there are some flicks I do prefer to watch on tape over other formats (namely direct-to-video and other titles which seem intrinsically linked to the format and era). But mainly I collect vhs because I collect films and simply do not eschew outdated formats.

    Great and honest video, Paul. It's the same reason I collect old jazz 78's (as well as vinyl, CD's, VHS, DVD's, and Blu-rays) because I see 78's as historical artifacts that existed in the lifetimes of the original jazz artists. It's not as if 78's offer the best sound possible (no way!) which is why I also have better remastered cleaned up jazz albums on CD. I enjoy the historical novelty of VHS (I never tossed out the VHS movies I collected in the 80's and 90's), but if I can find movies for much less on DVD or Blu-ray in widescreen with extra features, then I'll scoop them up every single time over a VHS version.

    I agree up to a point. I think you can do both. Some people think it's an either/or proposition. I love blu rays and have a ton of them, and it's amazing what they are doing with restoring all these old movies. With that said, I think there's a feel and an atmosphere to VHS tape that is unique and fun that you can't get anyplace else. VHS are beer and blu rays are brandy. Brandy is certainly finer quality but sometimes you want beer for its unique flavor. There certainly are choice titles that I want on blu ray that are my all time favorites I want a clean copy of for posterity. On the other hand I do not have to own absolutely everything on blu ray. Another thing you have to think about too is that with all these new 2K and 4K scans, now the DVDs are looking almost as good as the blus! Look at a Vinegar Syndrome DVD/blu combo pack. There's hardly any difference. I don't know exactly how old you are but I remember seeing movies in the theater in the 1970s, the prints were really beat up sometimes. And I love old beat up prints. They did not look like blu rays in the theater, never did. It was the size of the picture and large sound system that made the difference, and nobody has all that in their living room obviously. The whole "as the director originally intended" thing seems kind of silly to me because after TV came about in the 1950s the director knew it would later be shown on TV too, and was probably quite glad when it did. It wasn't considered a problem. As far as records go , I have a 1950s record player with tubes and a single speaker that can blow any huge modern sound system away tone wise. I love the Doors too! And I think my Doors records have a better tone on records. But that depends a lot on your own personal set up. CDs always sounded flat to me and never had the deep dynamic punch you in the gut records had. You might as well just pull up KZread through your blu ray machine and play a song through your TV that way, it's gonna sound the same as a CD.

    I wasn't around in the 70's, so I envy that you've been able to see many of these films when they were fresh. However, I have seen some revival screenings on film and sure, many are a mess. I guess my point was that no director makes a movie intending it to look that way. It just the nature of the business - a print floats around the country, playing in multiple cinemas multiple times a day. Thats just wear and tear. Sure, the director is aware that it could happen, but if they had the option to prevent that, do you think they would've taken it? I'd imagine so. The whole reason they chose to shoot 35 over 16 is because it was a huge improvement over the latter. Therefore, they invested the extra bucks for a better theatrical experience. Shooting in 16 or even video was usually a last resort. I'll admit, I'm not a music aficionado. So I'm not going to speak on the topic with too much authority, but I have listened to records (mainly the Doors :P), and its an interesting experience to hear the music as it was heard during the era and I can appreciate that. But my go to option would still be a clean version. Like I said, there's a time and a place for everything, but personally VHS and records are just not my first options. Always great to meet a fellow Doors fan!

    KZread and CD are not equivalent, like, at all. Audio compression, hello. I mean the saving of bits, and not volume compression when I say that btw. CD is uncompressed even if the master is sometimes brickwalled. Speaking of which... Doing a separate mastering for vinyl can sometimes improve the dynamics in a way that isn't present on the CD, but that's a case-by-case basis. @Toad XY, but what was the artist's intention in the studio, to get something clean and rich to last forever or something dirty and authentic like a live performance? Because some bands will change how they record depending on the mood they're going for and Analog Archivist's point still stands in that case about artist intent.

    I agree about theatrical releases being viewed on a format that exposes all the film grain. If it was filmed on video, then I prefer to watch it on video, as the director intended. I don’t think it translates as well to other formats, and as you said, if it was made within the vhs boom era, I would assume the director envisioned the movie to be viewed on the vhs format, ultimately. Also, with some made for tv movies, there were a lot of them, not necessarily made for video, but were made to be viewed on tv when just about every tv was 4:3 aspect ratio, so those are also in that pool of movies which i find acceptable to watch on vhs and never need to upgrade when its rereleased on bd. But as you mentioned, this is the exception. Great upload. 👍🏻

  • @vhscollector

    @vhscollector

    Exactly. I think it goes without saying that if a film was shot on video, it was intended for video. But I think its worth adding that this is only because of the limits of the technology at the time. Had these filmmakers had other options to release their films in a higher quality, then I'd imagine they would do so (if it were financially feasible). Of course, there are some directors at the time who didn't care a less, and replaced their film elements with video masters... a real shame. But these same directors are kicking themselves for it today. They did not foresee a future of home video in HD. Also, as a side note, some directors did shoot films with an understanding that it would be viewed in both fullscreen and widescreen, and shot to accommodate both scenarios. mainly out of necessity and to avoid a Pan and Scan situation. For instance, Kubrick. But I'd imagine he would've preferred his films to be viewed in widescreen and in a high resolution... I base this assumption on how much attention he paid to such small details, some of which weren't noticed on home video until HD hit the market. Thanks for watching and the great comment!

    Point taken. However, this was only because that was the limit of the technology of the time. Analog was the only option. Some of my favorite artists are recording analog and prefer listeners use vinyl. If the vinyl is clean and newish there will be very little to no hiss or pop. Most people just don’t take very good care of records. Anyway thanks for the video. I always enjoy watching.

    For me personally, a higher resolution allows me to engulf myself further into the movie. Grain and print damage often reminds me I'm watching a movie. • @gyloir
    @gyloir6 жыл бұрын

    I agree with you when it comes to movies. Especially those shot on high quality film, I mean we haven't even yet reached the "peak" when it comes to fully seeing the quality of a good film, especially those shot on larger sizes like 65mm. 4k isn't large enough to even bring out all the detail of the image for a large format like that. Recently watched the Synapse Suspiria release and it looks jaw dropping, even compared to new movies, and that's just 1080p, not even 4k. As far as music goes, that's a bit backwards? Vinyl is analog and if the music was recorded that way you're getting the full sound detail, whereas taking that recording and putting it to a cd, you usually end up with compressed audio which in turn affects the sound detail and dynamic range of the m usic. Cd's, then eventually digital (mp3, etc) was less about "sounding better" vs vinyl and more about simply being convenient. You could pop a cd into a cd player and take it with you, easily switch them out, skip to the specific song you wanted, etc. Then digital comes along and now you can literally have multiple albums all at your fingertips in a tiny little mp3 player or whatever you use. When it comes to digital sound mp3's are at the low end and are compressed to hell and back. When you play music at a low bitrate you lose detail, just like streaming a low bitrate movie, you get artifacts in the picture and the detail of sound is missing bits because of the compression. Vinyl isn't all roses though, you had degradation over time, limits to the length of songs, etc. However these days digital can be good, you can get lossless audio (IE Flac) and other things that sound great, higher quality digital releases through most streaming services, etc. The major issue with digital music (cd's included), isn't the format itself but the engineers behind mixing it. It gave rise to one of the WORST things to happen to the music industry as a whole, the "loudness wars." You can google that and have a read , it's quite fascinating and also quite sad. Basically a lot of music has the high's and low end "chopped" off (bye bye dynamic range) to make the overall song "louder."

  • @blib3786

    @blib3786

    2 жыл бұрын

    What you said about CD is complete nonsense. CD is much higher audio quality than vinyl, has much less noise and is capable of significantly wider dynamic ranges. CD audio is also completely uncompressed, so you're not losing any information when transferring from analog like you claim (unless you mean dynamic range compression, which has everything to do with the mastering process and nothing to do with the format itself). Vinyl doesn't have any advantages over CD besides cool factor, which is a fine enough reason to prefer it over CD, but doesn't justify making up a bunch of nonsense about it's alleged "superiority" over digital like vinyl proponents tend to do.

    Some movies deserve to be watched on VHS. Halloween (1978) is a perfect example! You can argue that watching a movie on VHS is more authentic because that’s how it was originally intended to be viewed at your own home. Where as DVD and Blu-ray are just remastered versions of the same movie hence losing it’s authenticity.

  • @timsmythfilmsandanimations

    @timsmythfilmsandanimations

    You also have blu rays and dvds that are scanned from the original film negative, instead of a film print, like Halloween 1978, and we now see many details in the image that were never seen in the original theatrical run, and some not meant to be seen, as the cinematographers knew what was going to show up in the final print, and what wasn't. So is that really presenting the films as they were meant to be seen? It is certainly not presenting the films exactly as they were seen in the theaters.

    If you’re hearing a ton of pops and cracks then your set up isn’t very good, and your records are dirty. That or the pressing sucks. Cd’s and records are mastered for differently, and have different dynamic range. When older albums started ending up on cd’s, lots of artists ended up having their original masters changed. So if you’re looking for an “authentic experience” there are many instances where the only way to do that is with the original release. Also records seem to outlive cd’s for some reason. I don’t see any of these formats as superior to one another though, so long as you are getting whatever it is you are looking for from the art your consuming.

They're often remixed and altered. There's also many CDs (late 90s-to present) that suffer from the "loudness war" style of remastering as well which eliminates dynamic range. Also CDs are limited to 44.1 khz and there's definitely an analog warmth and clarity to old music with no digital sourcing. As far as the pops, crackles and distortion use a real setup with clean records, high quality stylus and this is really minimized. A lot of people into vinyl now have no idea how to properly setup a turntable as far as tracking force, proper anti-skating etc. I wouldn't compare this to VHS tapes and digital formats at all.

    I agree with you re: VHS, but your comparison to vinyl is not accurate at all. Until the CD era, recordings were produced with vinyl in mind. Albums were mixed specifically for that format. And the pops, clicks, and scratches are generally not present when an LP is brand new. That happens more when people don’t take care of their records and don’t clean them. A clean vinyl record that is well produced can sound just as good as a CD. It’s really a matter of preference. Unlike VHS which was always a shitty format and the only appeal is nostalgic.

    So... I'm gonna just throw this out there since you don't take the time to answer my other comments anyways... if you want a movie for its "historical value" why wouldn't someone want it sealed?... now why wouldn't you want to put that sealed movie into a Slab/grade it?... I really think your emotions are getting the best of you with vhsdna... part of sealed grading is seal grading why would you open it inspect it if the only reason is rare is because of the seal?..... there's plenty of open copies for you to watch go to a yard sale... not trolling brother love your Channel and I still want you to reach out to me

    In this video, I'm referring to rare videos, not common Hollywood films that were printed in the millions. An item unsealed has more historical value, at least from my perspective, because it can be studied inside and out. With a sealed tape, there's no guarantee that the film is even still on the cassette. There's so much uncertainty. A sealed video may be an interesting conversation piece, but there's still so many unknowns.

    Yeah, I don't get it. Folks my age who had to schlep piles of heavy records and portable record players around just to hear a few songs found CDs and never looked back. And now with my iPod I can plug into a friend's system and have every album I ever bought and more at my fingertips. I still have all of my albums but I think they are now petrified.

    Haha The site itself began as a database of VHS releases, so it is literally a VHS collector. The name of the site does not refer to myself. In a literal sense, I guess I am a VHS collector, but I don't collect them because they are VHS, but rather because of their historic/intrinsic value or print status.
