Very good answers! I saw aphids and ants on some melon plants and thought the ants were going to kill the aphids for me, but the plant went downhill and died. Then I learned ants will farm and keep the aphids. Next time I will take action.

Great video. I’m glad to hear an honest critique of store bought compost. Some store bought bags of composts are good where I live but some are just chunks of wood. New gardeners need your great advice.

I have leaf cutter ants that cut leaves off some trees and shrubs on my property. I leave them alone and let them do their thing. It seems like they know what they are doing and don't hurt the plants or trees. I also have a bee hive that moved into an old pecan tree. It was a nice surprise to find such great pollinators right on my property.

Most of the ants I have on the plants are because of aphids - treating for aphids solves the ant problem. Ants in the ground no problem, other than they are fire ants and they suck. Grubs on the other hand go after my roots and I see that as a big problem. They have caused significant problems for me.

Love what you said about the humble grubs. I saw a woman on another youtube channel called Garden Answer cut a grub in half with her shears as soon as she saw it and I was so appalled and disgusted at her barbarism and arrogance. I'll never watch that channel again. It makes me sick just thinking of it now. Utterly disgusting human chauvinism. If you're going to kill the thing, she could have at least done it off camera. Some people are so grotesque.

If you grow the right thing leafcutter ants can actually help you keep weeds under control. I have seen openings in the forest that sceme 2 have been created by the ants. After an ant colony gets old it starts to grow species that the ants don't like. One species that you can grow easily in the presence of leaf cutter ants is tamarillo the tree tomato and one that you can't is Chili Peppers

The grub worms I deal with kill plants unfortunately. They eat the roots of plants. I just treat it with beneficial nematodes specifically for grub worms. It works well, and did not seem to bother the earth worms and red wigglers, or the many other life in the soil. I of course got them again but will treat them again

On the ants, those red-colored fire ants, weeks ago they were gnawing off bits of the leaves of my grapefruit tree, the leaves stained with sooty black mold, but the new growth coming out they leave alone also since last week the Grapefruit is blooming these beautiful, oh so fragrant blooms, the only blooms they'll carry off are the ones knocked down by the wind, so my conclusion is the same as yours John, in my case they're more beneficial than harmful. Missed the IRIE 'stream John but here listening to ya and 2022 was the year of the Talayote (wild cousin of the Chayote), bumper crop, last year nada, but a friend from neighborhing Guanajuato told me the Talayotes produce every 2 years so hoping the rains are good and 2024 will be as good as 2022. Thanks for sharing your insight and knowledge John, 👍and👋from Querétaro.🤠
