Do I Need A Magnetic Starter on My Air Compressor?

In this video, Jamie goes over when and when not to use a magnetic starter on your air compressor. We also touch on heavy-duty pressure switches and the benefits of using a hybrid pressure switch. For fellow home gamers and DIYers, one trick I've seen is to attempt to find a dual rated contactor that's designed to work with both single and three phase current. They're probably cheaper than singe phase only, since they're a lot more common. A three phase only design should be able to be used as long as it's rated for at least the same current as the motor is going to pull. Good luck people!

I bought one too. Probably the same one you bought. I bought a new Quincy QT-54 and put a starter on first thing to avoid burning out pressure switches. So far, so good. Next I will rig up an aftercooler to keep the air dry.

I think the confusion in my mind comes from the word "starter." Don't you think the term relay or contactor would be a better term/description? It's my understanding the magnetic starter is a slave relay controlled by the pressure switch. In automobiles, the starter motor relay is a slave to the key switch. The purpose of the slave relay is to switch the high current of a motor, especially when a motor starts as a locked rotor. When a motor uses a start capacitor, the capacitor is actually used to "strat" the motor. A magnetic starter does nothing to "start" the motor other than switching on the power with high current-rated contacts. Am I correct? Or am I missing something?

@@austech360 Well, at least people may be willing to pay more for a starter; it sounds like it should be more expensive. Otherwise, it's just a non-starter!
