If it was easy your dishwasher drain hose might be a bit long, I am finding a long hose is straining my dishwasher, I have caught it making some odd click noises after I switched to a longer hose to do the high loop, so now I am switching back to a 6 inch hose with the breather.

Worse than ugly, I have never seen a discharge blockage that did not involve the flow restriction air gaps produce. After all, the discharge water is a thin slurry that depends on flow to keep the solids suspended. For decades the "high loop" method worked well, so I suppose it had to be replaced with something that causes a problem.

  • @HungryH1951

It really helped me to understand what that thing under my sink was that was attached to nothing but a secondary drain pipe (evidently they installed a drain pipe just for the dishwasher apart from the sink drain pipe). Now that I know I am going to remove it since it is not being used at, the dishwasher has a high loop that goes straight to the disposal and it works just fine. Gonna install an air button for the disposal in the air gap hole since the air gap is just sitting there unused and I don't need it at all.

Sadly, CA is one state that requires them. Maybe somebody will make one that does not cause plugs by restricting the flow 75% (3/4 inch hoses attached to a device with a 3/8 inch orifice), but until now it is what the code requires. Removing the cap and the "top hat" (see 1:40) lets you put a bit of liquid drain cleaner in the larger part that leads to the disposal. Doing that every few months will reduce your aggravation greatly.

I've been DIYing for 50 of my 70 years and have not seen a dishwasher blockage that was not in an air gap system. With the flow throttled about 75% in the device, it is certain to happen. When they make one that is not restrictive they will have a winner at last.

Would you think it's worth me installing an air gap for that little back up into the sink basket? I've always wondered if an air gap would work as an option to vent a sink that needs to be vented? Probably not as I've not seen anyone talk about that as a venting option for example a slow drain:) Thanks for all the vids you produce. It helps a lot of people:)

I would just put a high loop in the line. You don’t want air gap under your sink. It that gets clogged you will have a mess.

The hose from the dishwasher is too big to fit on the inlet of the air gap

I have found that I’m am always readjusting the hoses is I do it that way. People may find it easier to put them on first. I’ve been told I do a lot of things the hard way! 🤣

Does it matter how close the air gap is installed to the dish washer?

I have never seen anything that said a distance for between air gap and dishwasher. Dishwashers themselves will have a Max length on the drain line for drainage purposes. How far away are you trying to put it?

@@ThatFixItGuy it's next to the sink . On a double sink seems like most air gap are installed on the sink farthest from the dishwasher and not near the sink closet to it. Glad it don't matter . Thanks for the reply

You can totally put it right next to it. I think most get put where it is easy to install.

So, I want to install a 3-stage undersink filter and am trying to avoid having to drill a hole in my quart counters for the faucet...but, instead, I'd like to use the hole where my required air vent it. I'm hoping to tell the plumber who quoted me $600 to pound sand and do it myself (even I could do it after a bit of Youtubing, I think). He said he can rig this up in such a way as to be able to use that current hole...something about putting it underneath - not sure what that'd entail, though? Maybe just a high-loop? Any thoughts on how I can stay within code, install my filter myself, and not have to drill another hole, please?? Thanks for the video!

I would go with a high loop. You don’t want a manufactured air gap installed under your sink. One partial of food stuck and you’ll have a flood. This video should help. kzread.info/dash/bejne/YptorKaqg8TMncY.html

It is in compliance some states and not in others. May not be code, but I have a high loop in my house. Who have more power? Wife or plumbing code. My wife did not want the air gap.
