Do I Have Sciatica?

Sciatica is a condition characterized by pain radiating along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down through the buttocks and into the legs. It typically occurs when the nerve is compressed or irritated, leading to sharp, shooting pain, numbness or tingling sensations in the lower back, buttocks, and legs. This video discusses common causes and ways to diagnosis it. Its important to note that Sciatica can significantly impact daily activities and mobility, requiring proper diagnosis and management for relief.

I knew I had spinal stenosis, so I recently had an MRI, because I want to know exactly what is wrong. My family doctor said the results showed spinal stenosis, which I already knew! I have an appointment with a NS later this month. I have numbness in both feet and legs. I cannot stand for very long without my lower back killing me. Also, can't walk very far at all. Sitting or laying is fine (Except feet are always numb laying). You are very informative! I will definitely know better what is going on after I see the NS.

I have the exact same thing. I was seen by several surgeons. Right now, I'm deciding which one I like better (I'm from South Jersey). I'm told I need surgery for sure, but need to decide whether I go with the surgeon who suggested an Xlif, or the surgeon who suggested a traditional full fusion with laminectomy. Either way, the symptoms are horrible. It ruins your whole quality of life.

Yes, it is horrible! I still haven't seen the NS, but he has a great reputation. I am praying for an easy fix, but who knows. Years ago my brother had some spinal stenosis (I don't know what it consisted of) and he said when he got out of bed his legs would absolutely kill him. He had a MRI and saw a surgeon. The surgeon told him only surgery would cure him. My brother said he wanted to wait. The doctor told him that he'd be back. He took the films to his chiropractor and asked if he could help him. The Chiropractor said he thought he could but no promises, but it would be rough and my brother would be sore. My brother went for 7 visits and has not had the problem again, and that was many years ago. My brother is in his 70's now and works every day! Oh, how I wish mine could be that easy!! I looked up the Xlif and that sounds better to me. I am all for "minimally invasive! "Praying whatever you decide goes well for you. It's a scary decision for sure. @@user-um3yo9ul7q

I have spinal stenosis and severe sciatica to the point that my lower body gets numb. When I walk, I hurt so bad that I sweat profusely from the tip of my head down. I have done epidural treatments and prednisone. I get relief with the prednisone but once its over, the pain comes right back. Physical therapy actually makes me hurt worse. I only want surgery if it will help. I just want to walk like a human again 😢

I sure do and standing and walking the past 2 days was awful! I have lost bar and cervical stenosis and bulging discs. Ouch! I’ve had 2 surgeons immediately suggest lumbar laminectomy and fusion without less severe treatments first. I refused. I see our NUCCA QSM3 chiropractic weekly and he very gently aligns my spine.

Great informative videos without trying to sell some product or course. I would be interested to see a video on failed back surgery (or increased leg pain a few years after surgery) and considerations for additional surgery (e.g., would there be a difference in surgical recommendations for foraminal stenosis if there was a prior laminectomy at the same level).

Hi Dr. Su, can leaked fluids from painful degenerative discs seen at L4/l5 and l6/s1 (I have an extra vertebrae) cause bilateral radiculopathy all the way into my foot? No nerve compression was seen on my MRI but stretching my hamstrings significantly triggers my radiculopathy symptoms. Thank you

Sometimes a high intensity zone which is a tear in the back of the disc can cause chemical irritation to the surrounding nerve.

Hi Doctor Su, I am 69 years old. I have battled sciatica-like pain and numbness in my legs and feet (yes, both legs and feet, but the right leg and foot is much worse than the left) for about 5 years now. I have had numerous MRIs done in that time span, and none show any issue with the spine that would compromise the nerve(s). My neurologist referred me to pain management since she and the spine surgeon could not find anything wrong with the spine and disks. I did not have a Magnetic resonance neurogram. Is this procedure pretty standard in the imaging industry now? Would it possibly confirm the existence of SI joint pain? Piriformis syndrome? In the right leg, my pain begins in the upper buttock, and all the way down to the foot. Numbness in the foot, bottom and side. Thanks.
