Do hazel make good bonsai?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have a couple of collected hazel (corylus avellana) bonsai trees and in this video, I take a look at them and make a fairly drastic decision to deal with a problem by air layering.

Nice Tony! I feel hazels worth ago like you say cheap readily available and strong. You shouldn’t have any issues with back budding it you cut a strong branch back. They coppice them back for new poles they really are tough! I’m going to air later my parents corkscrew hazel.

Nice one. Thanks for the information, Sam. I'll just cut that long thin branch back then and it will hopefully sprout! I'll look forward to seeing your video.

Hi Tony. Great video again. I own 4 Hazel bonsai, 1 of them is a red one from nursery stock. Allready 2 of them are older looking ( and i think very nice) trees. 1 month ago I airlaired a red Hazel which is growing in my garden and had a very nice piece of contorted trunk. i cannot see any roots through the plastic yet, but i'm going to give it a few more months before i check upon it. Very curious about it.

Hi Michael. That sounds interesting. Fingers crossed for your air layer, and please keep me updated if you see any signs of success! Like you I plan on leaving this for a couple of months before curiosity gets the better of me!

Hey Tony, looking good. Agreed on the hasel underappreciated for bonsai. I am growing one out, because I was not supposed to toss a big bunch of roots when I pulled a hasel from my veggie patch. They develop fast.

Yeah, they grow like weeds, so I'm hoping that it will air layer. I'll look forward to seeing you work on your tree in an upcoming video hopefully!

Hi Tony, Great video. Keen to give some Air Layering a go myself and wondered how this Hazel took to it? I agree, beautiful looking trees, not too bothered by the slightly larger leaves.

have a crack mate. it's usually a pretty successful technique, and it'sfantastic when you get good roots and cut it off the main plant.

I have couple of smaller hazel in nursery beds that I am developing for future development - so good to see how they may look one day! I love working Sycamore and Red Oak, despite the big leaves. With sycamore I normally remove the large leaves about now and then enjoy the next flush as the leaves remain relatively small for a few months. I agree, no better feeling than when you can pull an entire air layer cut away in one piece :)

I sometimes think we must be suckers for punishment for choosing to grow bonsai out of these large-leafed species, but like you, I just love a challenge! Seeing as these hazels were collected relatively recently I'm not messing with them too much, but in the future I'll definitely have a crack at some defoliation.

Mornin' T ☕. Thats a cool piece of yamadori. A thing I heard about hazel is that the leaf size reduces if it is fed and watered well. I have two purple contorted hazels that im gonna work on next year. Ill need to airlayer a few branches off, if it works out, Ill put your name on one of the airlayers mate.

Interesting, I have a little tree that I thought could be hazel, going to have to get my book out. About leaf size I have a horse chestnut tree to which I’m training as bonsai and I absolutely love it, I remove the larger leaves. Honestly can’t wait to see if it will produce the candles one year as it’s a fairly old ish lol. Thank you for your time

Hazel aint on my bucket list, so to speak, as I am allergic to the nuts and pollen so maybe the tree too🤧. Choice of tree is one thing but sharing technique and caring is a more general and always useful thing that never grow old so keep it up Tony🙂.
