What was the Navigation Act of Chelmer and Blackwater 1793?
The navigation has an unbroken history from the 1793 Act of Parliament authorising the making and maintaining of a navigable waterway. The navigation was almost 14 miles long, with twelve locks and five bridges. The cost of coal in Chelmsford is said to have halved when the navigation opened.
