Do Damage Bonuses Matter?

A handful of weapons in TF2 come with a damage modifier, from the Direct Hit to the Liberty Launcher. How much do these modifiers affect the effectiveness of the weapon? Do some modifiers matter more than others?

    liberty launcher is on the threshold of going from the worst to the best launcher simply if the damage deficit were slightly reduced. charge the penalty from -25% to -15% or even -20% and I reckon it would get a ton of play. in its current state however it's just shit simply because you can't kill anything even if it has insane mobility, higher weapon accuracy and an extra rocket. In ozfortress it's a bannable offense to run or speak positively about the direct hit so I can't

    Just spam it at scouts. Works for me they cant dodge 3 fast rockets. And ignore soldier 1v1s

    All burst weapons that can do more damage than stock have been designed to avoid one shotting. The loch was nerfed, the backscatter has bad spread and the FAN can only do 113 damage.

    something i think about with a love/hate relationship with tf2 and that is the between how satisfying it is to land that pipe- or that rocket and the movement but sometimes despite hitting those shots it doesn't get the kill, its heartbreaking when they get away. you summed up a lot of those thoughts in my mind really well, i wonder if changes will ever be made to these weapons, or at least if TF2 DOES end up in the community's hands-- will we make those items better?

    Funniest thing is that stickies still have a +/-2% random damage spread to this very day. And Valve has already made a server rule to disable random fall damage spread, but chose not to enable it on official servers...

    Demo primarily relies on direct hits on pipes to deal damage, while soldier primarily relies on splash. Theres no reason to give a buff to the projectile speed AND a damage buff for aiming the pipes easier. No need to make an already good class even better.

    @@lipschitzlyapunov The +15% damage buff wouldn't break many important damage thresholds, outside niches like killing healthy Battalion's soldiers in 2 pipes. The only thing this damage bonus would do is give some forgiveness when shooting wounded or slightly-overhealed targets, with the +15 damage helping cleanups.

    12:56 id like to point out that even though they are the same number, they do not have the same affect. the positive version -25% is surprisingly +33.33...%, for me the easiest way to understand why this is, is to turn it into a fraction. -25% = 3/4 and +25% = 5/4, the way you get an actually equivalent affect between a percentage upside vs a downside is to flip the numerator and the denominator, so the 3/4 would become 4/3. thats how i got +33.33...%, btw the negative version of +25% would be 4/5 which is -20%. if anyone struggles to understand, think of the case of -50%, imagine you do -50% of the number 2, whats 50% of 2? 1 of course, now how much percent of 1 would you need to add to add to itself to get to 2? 100%! so taking 50% away requires adding 100% of the new number to get back to the original number. even though they are actually different, i dont think it would make a ton of difference if you pulled the direct hit up to 33% cause it seems like most thresholds are closer when decreasing rather than increasing, but that could be another case of that unintuitive numerical difference as you get to higher and higher fractions of the hp. someone would have to do the actual math to see what thresholds a +33% rocket launcher would cross.

    Could a LL with -20% damage finally be meta? I'm guessing it'd have to give up a bit of projectile speed or something else. As for damage bonuses, even tho they may not break thresholds directly, they help increase your consistency in reaching those thresholds at longer ranges, as a damage bonus partially mitigates damage fall-off, and may be able to brush-off other factors like overheal or resistances

    They do have the same affect. From the wiki: Liberty Launcher: 84 (-28 damage) Stock: 112 Direct Hit: 140 (+28 damage) Both effects modify the damage by the same amount.

    @@gyroninjamodder They add/subtract the same number, but a -25% is still relatively bigger than a +25% when comparing the final result vs the base stock damage. 100% is 1/5th of 125% Meanwhile 100% is 4/3rds of 75% 1/3rd is considerably larger than 1/5th, so the damage gap is significant

    @@gyroninjamodder Also, don't compare full ramp-up numbers. Many weapons have different ramp-up values; rockets often have 125%, most guns have 150%, and scatterguns have 175%. What you're looking for is the Base Damage, which is 90 for the stock rocket, 112.5 for the Direct Hit, and 68 for the Liberty Launcher.

    The liberty launcher also has increased push force, giving you stronger rocket jumps and stronger knockback on players you hit. It really is insane how close this weapon is to being disgustingly overpowered.

    Tested this out; not true. Make sure you weren't in a rebalance server when testing this, as servers like ctf2w or bad weapon rehab often tinker the LL this way. The LL has less enemy knockback due to lower damage, and it deals the same knockback on user as any other RL
