#Dads need to be present, engaged, and involved to make smart, successful, powerful kids. So where are the dads? Why do so many dads think their roles are superfluous? What's the science here?

⏰ SERIES DESCRIPTION
⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡
Dads exist in every culture and in every animal on earth and yet, in humans they're not often studied, and sometimes ignored entirely. In this series, I dug into the importance of dads in human relationships. I learned that #Dads need to be present, engaged, and involved. How having a dad around affects you (for better or worse). That meant exploring what it means to be a dad, whether the kids same-sex parents are any different than those of different-sex parents, how children physiologically change their parents brain, and whether toxic masculinity and machismo is harming your kids.
Dads are more than just a male parent (they don't even have to be). They're a set of traits that show children who they can be and are different than their other parent. Dads are source of security, safety, play, communication, emotion, empathy, love, and companionship (Just like any other parent). Non-birthing parents have a different outlook than birthing parents simply because they’re different human beings!

    Loved the video. I grew up with an absent father and a mother who passed when I was 16. I now have 3 boys and a step daughter of my own. I can’t even describe the difference in their mental and emotional health compared to my own at that age. My hope is that I am the root of a new, healthy, family tree that will have changed for generations to come. Ps: congrats on becoming a father Trace!

    My father passed away when I was 15, now I'm 21. When I had my dad with me, I was fearless, I did things most teens do, without major fear of getting injured. I traveled out of, town, out of state. After that, I'm not so open anymore, more like a cat in a box. I don't feel confident even when leaving my village. My mom is strong and protecting, but my thinking and feelings are not like that time anymore.

    Thanks for sharing that. You obviously loved your father and miss him a lot. I am a father of two kids. One is 13 and the other is 6. I have been their primary carer nearly all their lives and I worry how they would go if I died before they both reach adulthood. I would want them to always know how proud of them I am and how much I believe that they can work it out in the end. I believe in them and I bet your dad felt something like that also about you. I wish you the best and thanks again for sharing your experience. Every day is a new opportunity. Some days we are able to grasp that opportunity and some days we can't. That's ok. I wish you well.

    Family planning is a huge huge benefit of birth control! Unfortunately, I’m in the US where certain religious groups prefer people who don’t share their beliefs should still be unable to family plan in this way. Lots of people are working to provide birth control for free; which makes the most sense to me.

    @@TraceDominguez Birth control should be free, period. It is simply too important to have access financially restricted or means-tested. My basic guideline is that if it is good for you and good for society it should generally be free. If we want people to 'make good choices' we need it to be easy and affordable to make those choices. (This is why the instructions for pouring water out of a boot are written on the bootheel.)

    Without disagreeing with the overall sentiment, there's a lot of 'correlation' mentioned here when all I can think of is the 'causality'. (Some dude on youtube taught us to note the difference ;-). ) So, if the parent is a screw-up, it is very likely that the kid is also a screw up. And that that screw-up parent will also more likely be an absent parent. And of course the other way around. Not done any research, but it correlates well to what I've sampled from my surroundings for decades, as well as with the overall message of the here quoted research.

    Sorry Trace. When you became a Father, you became a sucker. When you became an "Involved Dad", you became an object of ridicule. The life results of kids with Dads came from Dads of years ago. There is no data on the results produced by the ineffectual clowns that we call Dads today. I do understand that this is political and YT would censor you, if you were frank about it. You have to say, only, what they allow or be banned.

Something else is needed and maybe you can found a new way. We don't even know what a successful upbringing is looks like anymore. What works for the future is likely to be very different from success now. Who can say? Good luck Trace. What is the goal of this video? I agree about the general thoughts that you are presenting, but the way you´re doing it seems very sensational, preachy and unlikable. Just look at the title. It creates a divide right from the get go.

    The presentation of scientific findings is so not scientific. More words does not prove a point more. On the contrary, there were so many biases and a priori opinions mixed in between the long lists, that I'd argue it would have been far better to leave "the science" out of this video all together. Or focus on a few papers and discuss correlation/causation or show meta studies to prove wider scientific consensus. Not all studies are equal and shouldn't be treated as such.

  • @TraceDominguez

    @TraceDominguez

    2 жыл бұрын

    I’m not presenting things scientifically, because I’m not at a scientific conference. I’m presenting things with on-screen citation, and a whole section about longitudinal studies (which is where most people seem to drop out of the video btw). Did you go read the papers I cited? Which ones to you disagree with? Why ? Is it the methods? A couple have smaller n but generally speaking I’m pretty clear about where the science came from to make the conclusions that “having two parents matters” “and dads can be one of them”

    @@TraceDominguez I'm absolutely on your side of the argument, I just didn't see the point of an endless list, mixed with personal opinions /refuting felt public opinions. It just feels like it wasn't simplified, but rather an overbearing of scientific findings. As a psychologist I am all too aware of bad papers and where it's important to not just throw adjectives out there. What is shown usually has a poor link to practical life, or it's more observational than experimental, which opens up a world of convoluting factors.
