Do Cold Water Regs Work in Warm Water?

Do Cold Water Regs Work in Warm Water? #askmark #scuba
@thomasmartin390
hello, I had a question. I will soon acquire the MTX RC. However, I rarely dive in cold water but rather in warm water. Is it just as efficient in hot water? thanks for you reply

    No they do not work in warm water. They start boiling. You can see the bubbles coming out.

    No such thing as a bad question, sort of. Mark's explanation reminds viewers of the physics involved in diving and the equipment we use.

    i would not of thought you'd have issues in warm water with a cold water reg. good question

    Would you know what the difference in weight between Xdeep standard aluminium vs the ultralight? Considering one of those with the Zeos 28 wing. I dive 10L al tanks in warm water.

    #askmark Hi Mark, I did my drysuit course back in February in a 4 degree lake in the UK. I was using a Fourth Element Hydra that was small anyway but tighter than a wetsuit for me with thick undergarments on. During the two dives I was using the drysuit for buoyancy and all the air was going to my feet and I kept becoming inverted. I was using negatively buoyant Fourth Element Tech Fins so that should’ve helped but it didn’t. I kept having to do recoveries and it kind of ruined the idea of drysuit diving and wasn’t great fun. My question is: What do you think caused this? And how can I prevent it when I ultimately come to get my own Drysuit? And one last question can you explain the difference between Apollo, Apeks and Si-Tech drysuit valves? Kind regards, Isaac.

    A lot of it is practice and correct weighting, it will come with time, it's why drysuit training is essential. The neoprene of the drysuit and bulky undersuit wouldn't have helped either by making your legs more buoyant. It could be that you could drop some lead from your weightbelt, then you won't need to add as much gas during the dive. You should only need to add enough gas inside your drysuit to alleviate the squeeze, too much and it will throw your centre of buoyancy off. Apeks and SiTech valves are pretty similar, I've never noticed a huge difference between the designs. The chest valve has a simple button to inflate and the shoulder valves screw in and out to adjust the sensitivity. Apollo are different. The chest valve is similar enough but, the shoulder valve has three settings to adjust the sensitivity. They all do the same thing just in slightly different ways.

    #askmark - Hello Mark, a question about the swivel that you have to install in the high-pressure hoses to the pressure gauge. I have now bought new MIFLEX hoses for my 2nd stage and the octopus as a replacement for the old rubber hoses and there was NO swivel in the old connections. Sure, they were sealed beforehand - so do you actually only need them in the high-pressure hoses? Thank you for a short answer - and thank you for the great explanatory videos on your channel :)

    You only need swivel pins on high pressure hoses. On low pressure hoses you'll find O-Rings on both ends that are all you need. The O-ring on the female end of a regulator hose can be hard to see but, it's there. I'll show you in a vid

    @@ScubaDiverMagazine ah thx - I have seen the o-Ring only on the hose-side - not inside the female part of the 2. stage… so I will wait on your video 👍🏼🤗

    #askmark Hi Mark! I'm looking to buy some regs for two stage bottles, but don't want to spend too much money. Is there any reg you can recommend that is on the cheaper side, but will still work for more demanding dives and won't force me to upgrade later on?

  • @ScubaDiverMagazine

    It depends on what you can get serviced conveniently. You can save money buying a particular model only to spend more money sending it off to a service centre further away. I'm partial to Apeks and Scubapro regulators. I'd be thinking about the DS4 or the DB4 from Apeks or the Mk17 _ if you can still find one_, from Scubapro. Even the Mk2 is a nice 1st stage if you don't need many hoses routing from it. Mares regs have a great balance of quality and price, something like the 15x or 62x are worth considering.

    #askmark if you buy a new regulator does the manufacturer recommend a new 2nd stage to go with that regulator? i see a lot of new 1st stage regs come with primary 2nd stages, at least that' how there displayed in the shop, but if you already have a primary and octo 2nd stage are they fine with the new regulator?

  • @ScubaDiverMagazine

    @ScubaDiverMagazine

    2 ай бұрын

    It depends... A lot of the time it will function perfectly fine but, there are some considerations. First is the ISP, each 1st stage will be set up by the manufacturer to regulate to a certain pressure but, this can vary between model and slightly between individual 1st stages. The 2nd stages or 1st stage might need a little tweak so they work together properly. On the warranty / standards side, each 1st /2nd stage combination is tested and certified for EN250. But manufacturers will only certify specific 2nd stages to each 1st stage because the testing and certifying is expensive. So pairing any 1st and 2nd stage together may function but, won't be guaranteed by the manufacturer

    Hello Mark, We recently had a little oops-a-daisy at the lake. We put our sidemount tanks in the lake when suddenly strong winds came up. The result was that the bottles drifted away. Three were found immediately, but one was gone and we searched for about an hour to find it again (which luckily we did). Is there a way to securely attach the tanks to the bank in the water? Thanks and best regards from Austria #askmark

    Luckily for me the last time something similar to this happened to me I had access to a RIB. I usually bring some rope and a collapsible grapnel anchor with me to tie a secure line to clip the cylinders to in the water. Secure the anchor and tie a buoy a good distance from it so it can be seen on the surface. If there's something heavy near the water's edge I'll tie it to that with the rope leading into the water.

    While Mark has replied below, I would also add the following that by using the 3 videos below, you could figure how to secure your tanks using the 3 videos below: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qZ2jvKmSZKy0krw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/mnekq5SYmtezfcY.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/daeEyLCfZ721fJs.html However, I would further add that I never have a strong winds scenario before (depending how strong it is I suppose) or to actually have the tanks in the banks of water. We do however put them submerged in the water with a torpedo buoy (vertically), or if the area has no other divers, we put them vertically in water. With experience in lineworks/ knots and a bit of creativity, I think you'll be able to solve it. Besides, in order of anyone to give you a specific solution to your problem, you do need to describe us more on the exact location you want to put the tanks (photos would help a lot). Mark's suggestion of anchors are perfect too. I never had the need to use a collapsible anchors before though. All the best. P.s. gosh!! I hope one day I can dive in Austria. Sounds fun !!

    #askmark I am in the market for a new DSMB. I came across new white and black or orange and black models. Razor make some for example. Apparently, they are easier to see under various circumstances which makes perfect sense to me. They already really stick out on the product photos. Is there a reason to not go with them like specific regulations that have to be a single colour?

  • @ScubaDiverMagazine

    @ScubaDiverMagazine

    2 ай бұрын

    Yeah, two-tone dSMBs have been around for a while and as they rotate and move on the surface they can give a 'flashing' effect to catch the eye. In some circles the colour of dSMB has a specific meaning so two-colour buoys can lead to confusion. But this can be dispelled before the dive by just letting the crew know you are diving with a certain dSMB. That's the only downside that I can think of

    #askmark Is Mares Quad CI worth waiting? On paper it looks promising for now, but not many information are shared for now, apart from the ones from few online dive stores.

  • @ScubaDiverMagazine

    The Ci hasn't been officially released yet. Too many dealers release information early to get a head start on Google ranking and pre-sales. From what I can tell, the Ci is a Sirius in the body of a Quad. If those are the features you need in a dive computer then Mares are generally good computers you can trust.
