Do Architects Have to Be Good at Math?

Drew Paul Bell (of www.DrewPaulBell.com) answers the age-old question: do architects have to be good at math?
tl;dw: It's not that you have to be good at mathematics, but you do have to be good at logical thinking AND creative thinking.

    I'm currently in secondairy school and my math results dropped hugely. I'm not bad at mathematics, but I'm bad in getting used to new things (like teachers, social situations and so on). People started worrying about my studies, which didn't really help as well. But I feel like I'm slowly getting up again. I also got my second math exam tomorrow, so this really helped me get back in the mood.

    Bram Van Hooydonck Keep at it, practice math and after a few months it'll be a habit you'll get used to. I didn't do great in math but I also didn't try to fix that and I still regret not doing so. Don't go down the same hole that I jumped in. Goodluck btw

    I studied civil engineering. But I still don't know what a civil engineer exactly does. They seem to manage construction in construction sites more like a contractor or doing paperwork. In college they didn't taught us how to put a building or and other structures together. They even didn't teach us drawing any kind of structure. And there don't seem to be any book in market that can teach you step by step how to design and build something in the real world. But I end up being good at drawing and design because that's what my tendency was even without realizing it. Even if I didn't know any of my teachers or classmates who are into drawing and design of buildings. My tendency was to stick to the computer all the time and find and learn the softwares used in drawing, drafting, structural analysis and even graphics designing and observing and improvising others designs and use them on my own designs wherever i can to make the design better. Basically its a lots of trial and error and keep on adding knew information, ideas and skills in your arsenal. I won't say I am bad at maths. Somehow I used to get lots of marks in maths in school but I don't think that I understood anything clearly of how to use them in real world. And I was and still am very bad at even addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. But I couldn't score god marks in maths at college and I don't understand calculus at all though I learned to solve the calculus problems and managed to pass the exams. But for me maths was very hard. I never enjoyed maths at all. But to be a professional it doesn't seem like one have to be good at school of college maths. If you know addition, subtraction, multiplication and division you should be able to handle the business and learn whats required in the business. Most of the part in architecture is just observing the structures drawing, modelling and improvising them. But chose what you really like to do. There are many professions to choose from. If you like to talk and write and explore you may consider studying journalism of acting and stuffs like that. Every profession can be daunting if you don't like what you are doing. In every professions you must be one of the best to sell yourself. You need to live it breath it sleep it, whatever....

    To understand many people not good at math, look up a condition called dyscalula. It's like dyslexica but for math. In my experience, because I had really impatient teachers who refused to consider this as a possibility, I find that we have to work harder and longer, maybe take the same lessons over again many times before we get it. If you are a kid surrounded by the "good" students who get to play and have special treats while you stare hopelessly at your math paper alone because you're the bad student that won't do as you're told, it's depressing. This is your life, this is everyday life. You just begin to zone out. You may doodle, you may daydream, because you give up, you even begin to hate this subject and hardly relate to people that love it. So to be able to relate, think of a time where you yourself could not do something other kids could that you were told you have to do or that you couldn't do things you really wanted like science or architecture all because of this one thing, then apply that feeling to most people who say they can't do math. As for me I will probably watch this video several times before I get it because you're actually interesting and I wanna learn this finally. Was told I can't.

    Calculus was not that hard for me in architecture but Physics was especially the topic about bouyancy and thermal expansion. It is important to learn math in architecture so it would be easy for you to do the estimates for your design especially when you chose to create a design with comolicated measurements and irregular forms.

    "they're just pieces of a puzzle that people aren't good at" this. This right here. See I was always told I was mediocre at math during school, but not in actually. I have an aptitude for solving problems and personally I feel like that's all you need with math. Those puzzles just get bigger and more complicated. Have not gotten lower than a B+ in my college classes, vs the C/D/F in high school. Turns out I'm just trash at double checking my work. XD. So moral of the story don't limit yourself by saying your bad at math! Identify those individual struggles, practice, and move onto the next.

    Genuinely value this, man. I'm going into architecture next year (my 5 year journey begins), but I took a massive risk. I dropped out of my favorite course, something that I am extremely good at/passionate about (concept art design), in order to pursue architecture. I really don't have a huge preemptive interest in architecture besides historical buildings, but that's about it. I don't think I'll enjoy it, and considering how hard it's gonna be I feel like I'm going to be stressed out tremendously. There's no going back now, I hope this was the right decision because I'm only seeing things through long term benefits in terms of job opportunities.

    I would also say I'm a bit more leaning towards the creative aspect, perhaps far more, but I do have a sense of logic behind me, and I can definitely improve it further. Is architecture still a route for me to take? I know this is my last path in life, like last real path of opportunity for genuine success in a stable job, so out of fear I can spend consistent days improving my logical thought process further.

    No man! You can transfer to tons of other things with a background in architecture. You learn how to think creatively. That’s incredibly valuable. You can go into just about anything. It depends on how much you actually know and how good you are at marketing yourself. Since architecture is both creative and logical, you have a lot of flexibility.

    +Richard Rivera Sánchez first, do good work and learn a lot in school. Then yeah, connections always help. I recommend going to conferences or local AIA events...if you're genuinely interested in architecture and make time for events like that, you will meet people in the industry who are like-minded. You can also search on job boards, (check Archinect.com as well as the job boards from the computer programs you learn: ArchiCAD, Revit, etc.) and applying cold to job openings is always an option too.

    +Ayrin Sultana you only need to know basic physics but I'm afraid that's what you're worried about. It really depends on how good of an architect or what type of architect you want to be. You can get into a big firm where the engineering department handles all the structural calculations and you just do details or research or the production of drawings. But obviously if you want to move up or get your license you have to pass the structures section of the ARE (assuming you're in the U.S.) and you will most likely have to take physics in school. If you really want to avoid physics I suggest looking into interior design. They have to do math still to figure out escape distances and clear spaces but they don't do much structure aside from partition walls. But they still do full build outs for retail/office/residential/hospitality/etc. From my understanding Interior Design = Architecture - Structure. A lot of times they manage entire projects (they can also hire structural engineers if necessary).

And being "good" in math will be helpful. Once in the career, and after passing all the license test, is not a big deal in the day to day scenario, but since you went through those courses math and science, whatever comes next, math related, is easy piecy.

  • @mgpxl4667
    @mgpxl46677 жыл бұрын

    This by no means applies to everyone, but I think that people who "like" math have naturally found a way to approach math that is both creative and logical. It is this creative and logical problem solving that is actually very similar to the process of architecture (as you mentioned). And if you enjoy this combination of creative+logical problem solving, you will likely be "good at math" because you will like math (feedback loop). So, I think the statement "I'm not good at math," while not universal, has implications further than just memorizing formulas or some hermetic world of math. If you think about math as - deconstructing a problem, discovering a path to a solution, and then logically moving toward that solution - then you can immediately see that relationship between "being good" at math and architecture. I enjoyed math growing up but could never memorize a single formula. It's only in hindsight, after my architectural education and in the profession for a few years, that I've made the connection I try describing above.

    There's math involved in passing the exams to become a licensed architect (ARE). If you struggled with high school algebra, then you'll struggle with the engineering portions of the ARE. When I took the exams, calculus was not required at all, however I used calculus anyway on a few problems. Sometimes using calculus is faster than being limited to just algebra.

    I could make a lame physics joke about how HEAVY the dose is...but I’m not. So, you’re welcome ;)...In school, I took two physics classes, but I could have taken chem or bio for my second science class. I took 3 structures classes (wood, steel, and concrete) that wasn’t exactly “physics.” “Statics” is a more appropriate word to use for the structures classes. In the profession, I would call it a minimum dose. There are some times when I do nothing but structural calculations for days (on a computer program) but that’s about once or twice every 6 months. And I think my firm is an anomaly. Everyone I talk to says they never do structural calculations.

    You keep talking about the tools on the computer but were these programs taught to you in college? Did they let you earn your degree with these programs, or did you have to break out the hard math? When I say hard math, I am talking about when numbers are replaced by letters, as for this, I have no proclivity in math. I always wanted to be a home architect. I used to love drawing homes as a kid, and going inside of different homes to see what they were like and for ideas... but as I got older, I was not good at math... sure I can do addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication... this is where it stops. I was told in high school that if you're not great at math, architecture was not for me. So even now, in my early forties, I would be far too scared to even chance going back to school.

    Marjhu Elle Mignonette Virata-De Guzman depends on what you mean by "average brain knowledge". If you're not good at math and physics or at the very least if you don't have a strong foundation in math and physics then I would not recommend engineering. I know some friends in civil engineering and their course work includes calc 1, calc 2, calc 3, and differential equations (that's just for math), for physics they take physics 1 (just forces, torque, momentum, stuff like that) and physics 2 (electricity & magnetism), and as for upper level civil engineering courses they also have statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, probably fluid mechanics, all of which are basically physics classes as well.

    Okay drew my problem I've been facing lately is last school year i graduated from high school, and all my life i have wanted to be a architect. My plan is to attend a community college undeclared, then after obtaining my basics transfer to Austin Texas University then get my bachelors degree of architecture. But my problem is that i recently moved into a very nice neighborhood which me and my mother live where we rent a home, each month we barley get by with paying the bills and the rent. NOW the original plan was for me to get a job and pay all the bills while she goes back to school for her teaching license. It will take her six months to obtain this degree so she could get payed more frequently and better wages. That leaves me six months to pay at least 800.00-1000.00$ each month. I've been looking into clerical, and IT work but have no real on the job experience. I'm not really sure what to do so i'm kinda looking for some advice, have you ever experienced any thing like this or am i the only ambitious future architect/designer that hasn't come from a silver spoon?

  • @DrewPaulBell

    @DrewPaulBell

    6 жыл бұрын

    That's a tough situation man. I assume you want to find a way to pay the bills for you mom without sidelining your dreams. I'm unclear on your school progress. When were you planning to transfer? Does working for six months conflict with your plan? If you are worried about how you are going to pay for college (which i think everybody should be right now) then maybe taking this time to work would be a good thing. But work in the field of architecture or construction. I don't know what city you are living in, but try to apply to all the architectural offices in town as a draftsmen. If you're in a small town where there is no architecture firm, look for places that do remodeling, or surveying, or framing, or roofing, or tile distributers, or stone quarries, or work at home depot. If you learn about buildings by getting your hands dirty, or working for a supplier, or even answering the phone for an architecture firm, you are getting experience that will put you ahead of someone who only goes to school. AND in the mean time you will make some money. But by working in a field that will prepare you for architecture, you are investing in yourself. everybody has zero experience when they start out, you have to get over that and find your way in, one way or another. I worked construction one summer, and it's a primary reason why I landed my job at an award winning firm immediately after graduating. They knew I had more of a handle on how buildings go together than most students. I'm not sure where you live, but I've heard the building industry is booming all over the US. So I bet you could find something. Here's what else you should consider: people who work in an office, work faster in architecture school. If you can start out working in an office, you may develop the ability to balance both school and work throughout your undergrad, and then graduate without crippling debt. At the end of the day, you are probably doing a good thing by supporting your mom like this. But, you have to find a way to move closer to your dreams in this time, or you are going to end up in a dark place. People who sacrifice their dreams for other people end up resenting those other people. Don't put yourself in a situation where you want to feel that way towards your own mom. You owe it to her to follow your dreams. I am missing a lot of details about your situation, but those are just some thoughts off the top of my head... I hope they help man. If you want to share any more details, let me know.

    One more thing... it may be cheaper to get a bachelors degree in business or something at a local 4 year college and then go to Austin to get a Masters in architecture. The BArch degree will take 5 years no matter what. So 2 years at community college + 5 for BArch would not be as fast as 4 years business undergrad + 2 years Masters of Architecture.

  • @jahart777

    @jahart777

    My plan was to transfer after completing my basics with out completing my associates.I never considered the rout of 4 years business undergrad + 2 years Masters of Architecture but that does sound more affordable and quicker, but i do want the ability to start my own firm if i ever got the balls to pursue that after accomplishing my degree. My question would be if i went that rout of 4years bus+ 2 years masters of arch would that still be possible and would my degree be respected the same with out having a bachelors? And i currently live in Dallas/Aubrey,Tx there's non-stop construction here and a few arch firms if i'm not mistaken!

    YES you have to be able to easily do math without struggle, and it should come easy to you! NO!!!!! it's not about the basics of math and taking more time or getting tutoring or a better teacher. It's the fact that most creative people are not good at math, or they might be able to learn if they struggle, but its not something that will be quick for them. OR or they will learn some aspects of math and quickly forget it....in one ear other the other within a couple of months to a year. These are called NATURAL SKILLS and ABILITIES. Its the same way some people cant do basic drawing or come up with something creative if their life depended on it. Drawing is a natural skill, some people can do it without anyone teaching them, and when they are taught basic principals, they soar and become even better. Its the same for every area. There are are MANY ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES and classes shared with CIVIL engineering, for STRUCTURAL DESIGN you have to do heavy duty calculation, and there are specif class on materials and stress testing of materials. If you are bad at high school math and only getting 65, as hard as you try...4 year architecture programs are not for you. To even get into a Architecture program you have to have the minimum of at least 75% in specif math subjects in a low density state or province , then you will have more specific math classes within the general 4 year architecture program. In large cities its even more competitive and higher.

    They say that 40% of the energy in the US is used to power buildings. The reason they cut down trees is to build buildings. I think architects are some of the only people who can significantly change the world in that way. That’s why Elon Musk invented those solar powered roof tiles because he knows how much energy we use to cool our buildings because they were designed as McMansions and big box retail stores instead of designing appropriately for local climates. And the other major chunk of energy is spent on transportation, which would be way more efficient if we didn’t live in suburbs where every house is an island on a sea of grass, you have to get in your car and drive to get anywhere, and they just dump water on the front yard to have the greenest grass that doesn’t naturally grow in that ecosystem.
