Nothing wrong with the development. It's for science. Robots can be use for galactic travels that human cannot. You know our sun will go red giant in 5-7 billion years from now, there will be no humans by then. What make more no sense and I don't want to understand is humanity killing dodo birds, elephants for ivory, deforestation for expansion, artificial islands, terrorism, warmongers, dictatorships, murderers, sex predators, polluters. Christians, Islam, Atheist, etc. doesn't matter, they at least go to war, human abuse fellow human, animals, and nature, witness the history. Robots can be made for 2 reason: to help human like a saint or war assistant. It's inevitable. I know why it may look creepy to you, because they act like a creepy human? Especially if you're pessimistic.

Ai however is created by humans, and after all its been programmed by humans, programmed to do what the humans intended it do to. If ai does something bad that harm humans or gets worse to the point that ( it kills humans, for example ) its not going to hell because its just a thing, programmed, the one who made it will have the consequences. Also ai does not have a spiritual consciousness and MORALS, so there is not way it can become conscious like as humans.

They can recognize an emotion? Yes. Respond to a specific emotion? Also affirmative. But they are not able to feel it, just there's no enough technology for that. No it's not.....you don't have to believe in something for it to exist anyways. AI doesn't base it's surroundings upon what it believes exists, it's cameras and sensors detect something is there or is not there, believe has nothing to do with it's process. If I don't believe in gravity it will still effect me regardless
