DNA test proves that Romas are from India | This Romani looks exactly like Anupam Kher

Hi! My name is Abhinav and I have been researching about the Romani people for over 5 years now. I have made several videos on KZread about them where I mentioned about them being from Indian origin. Many believed that so there were also many who don't think they come from India so in this video I filmed Robert's story, who is a Swedish Roma and shared his DNA test with me on camera.

That would be amazing in the regions of Andalucia specially in Sevilla there are many. I’m a Parsi and when I was there some of the Romani shop keepers of street stalls thought we were Romani. I believe they call their sect Cale Romani ? But they obv saw I was dressed diff. It’s sad to see that many locals still regard them as less than and often tell tourist not to go to their shops.

This channel is amazing! Shining a light on the history of the Romani people. As a British person with Indian ancestry, I have seen how the Romani people have been marginalised in the west but only over the last years have I realised they are originally from India. I now feel more compelled to connect with the Romani community in the uk as we are the same. Thank you! Keep posting these excellent and educational videos!

Absolutely. Most Roma have South Asian DNA, but rarely at around 50%. Some actually get 0%. It depends also from person to person, which Roma subgroup you are from. I'm of partial Romanichal descent with more distant central/eastern european Sinti-Roma and iberian Kale and my Indian admixture only comes up to 2%, i actually have much more south balkan and mediterranean. Most of my DNA relatives on the Romani side have at the most 20% Indian admixture, 10% being the average. All this said, i've had non Roma Indian DNA relatives contact me since i began doing genetic genealogy, which is nice.

Romanichals have less South Asian DNA on average than most other Roma. It does depend in subgroup. I believe most Roma (in much of mainland Europe, especially eastern Europe) have around 30-45% south Asian ancestry. It tends to be highest in/near the Balkans where it can be around 50% (maybe more occasionally). Spanish Gitanos tend to have around 20-25%.

@@skellagyook that makes a lot of sense considering my ancestry. What's amazing is i often match on DNA testing platforms with Roma from all over europe and like you said they often have up to 40% Indian admixture

It also depends on which chromosomes you inherit from your parents. If each parent is 50% Indian, you may still only get 5-10% Indian. We only get half of each parents chromosomes, so we may get the "other" half.

No offence but I think it's a personal choice of each individual, not everyone would like to go to India or any other country because there are many factors that is not for everyone while living in another country, I can't "go back" to a place I've never been, I'd like to visit India one day and many other countries like Japan, Italy, Canada and etc. But you can't make someone to go to India if he/she doesn't want to. Personally I have no ties to India except of my ancestry, it's like asking African-Americans to "go back" to their original African countries (I assume their ancestors most likely were from West Africa but I might be wrong, correct me if someone knows better) just let the people live in whatever place they want. (again no offence intended, I just find such comments in lots of videos about Roma people) .

Im only about 2-4 percent indian, possibly more because at home genetic testing is variable. My roma side has blend of west asian, middle east, balkan, slavic, and iberian. Growing up, I was told "were indian!" Without much added context. Turns out we were actually roma! Im the only of my moms kids that looks like it much at all, though! I count myself lucky :)

It has been tested years ago: According to a genetic study on autosomal data on Roma the source of South Asian Ancestry in Roma is North-West India. The two populations showing closest relatedness to Roma were Punjabis and Kashmiris which also happen to have the highest West Eurasian related ancestry amongst South Asians.

India was invaded since 7th century until 20th century and all those fightbacks brutal stories.

99% of Roma people from Czechoslovakia knows about our real background, they know we are coming from India originally and they also knows about our places in India. They know we are mostly coming from cities like Rajasthan and Panjab. And we Roma people from Czechoslovakia still using our Romani language the most I think, but so many Roma people from Czechoslovakia in these days. Living in England, Belgica, Germany or Canada. And we emigrated to dose countries because we have here better future than in Czechoslovakia, but no one even till this day don't know exactly why we left India this is the big question why? And now about the Romani language little bit for example the numbers are still almost the same with the Indian language. Like: Jek, Duj, Trin, Štar, Panč, Šou, Echta, Ochto, Eňa, Deš, It's from number One to Ten. Ears, we say in Romani Khana, or eyes, we say Jakha, or Hairs, we say Bala, Indian called, (Bal) or Water, we say Pani, Indian called, (Pany) or upstairs, we say Upre, and I think It's same this word exactly with the Indian, or Eat, we say Cha, it's exactly same as well I think, or Go, we say Dźa, it's exactly same as well I think, and now the last word of this little example of Romani language, knife, we say Čuri, it's exactly same as well I think? But another thing are our groups because we as Roma people from Czechoslovakia we are deviding ourselfs to three main groups, which are. Rumungre Roma, Sinty Roma or Vlachikane Roma, but they are also called or non as (Lovara Roma.) And about the tradition of child marrige as example. It's still here of course, but these two groups still doing it. Mostly till these days! (Vlachikane Roma) or the (Sinty) (Roma,) and the meaning of this tradition is still exactly same as Indian, they do it for richness or strength and for better life's of that young couple overall. And for my end I like to say brother two things the first one is, if you want to meet large group of Roma community, which know managing very well our Romani language! Then you have to visit Slovakia country, city (Košice) or then Belgica, city (Ghent.) And the second last thing I like to say the Indian most spoken language is Hindu but with so many different dialects and Roma people left India many years ago, so many words was forget and as well many new words came to Indian language by the time. And also we Roma adopted so many words from countries where we actually live as well, but basic betweens our two languages Romani and Indian language still the same, and this is important! 🔥❤️ And the Romani flag was inspired by Indian flag! The wheel in the middle is not the real wheel but circle like on the Indian flag. But the colors and lines was changed completely because of Indian country policy law. And Romani flag was made by Romani Union group many years ago here in England!

Bahtalo! Certainly, Roma have their roots in India. Rom, Dom, Lom, Dum: they once lived in India as Dum, the lowest cast (so what?). The history is difficult, but interesting. Nearly thirty years of friendship with Roma from the Balkans has led to a book that I am writing. Not in English, in Dutch, my language. There will be a translation in a while, who knows...

That's nice, I've watched your video about Rromani in Romania ( I am Rromani from Republic of Moldova- the neighbor country although culturally Romania and Moldova is the same thing- just Moldova was part of the USSR and got big influence from Soviet Union and Russian here is spoken as the second language- which gives me extra power being able to speak also Russian as many people claim this to be a very hard language 😄), also I know Indian films but old ones ( I don't really watch nowadays because I am not really interested and I rarely find interesting movies to me- an exception was RRR- it was interesting to watch) , I remember I've watched them as a kid classics like Disco Dancer with Mithun Chakraborty, movies of Rhithik Roshan (he kind of looks like my dad hah) and some of my relatives look like Bollywood actors oddly enough hah. My personal name is Indian lol ( Sardar ) but I actually found out it's Persian in origin, but If I am not mistaken that's how also Punjabi people are called( so I guess the name is widely used in many countries, In Armenia for example is also used as I understood) But anyway, regardless of history and genetics, we have a different culture, and we're clearly also different from Indians (culturally- in human aspects we're all the same race- Human). Nevertheless these kind of videos are interesting to watch.

That's cool, I guess for people from India, Armenia, Turkey, maybe even Arab countries my name would be easy if not efortless to pronounce, here many people were mispronouncing my name, and even one case in University a teacher thought I am a foreign student hah. I am kind of used to it- I am not upset, understandable that it's not a common name in Moldova and I guess in Europe in general.(crazy to think that I might be the only person with this name in Moldova)@@abhinavinsearchofthelost

oh I actually don't have it hah, I deleted it almost 2 years ago because it was too addicting so basically I quit Insta forever hah. And oh man, history of Moldova (more precisely Republic of Moldova, because Moldova is also a historical region of Romania, but the Republic of Moldova briefly *was* a part of Romania territory, just it got let's say taken in 1812 if I am not mistaken by Russian Empire that time and got back to Romania on December 1st 1918(it's like called Marea Unire (The Big or the Great Union-because that day Romania got its territories back) up until 1944 when Moldova (until that time called Bassarabia) was taken back to Soviet Union (and to this day some territories of former Bassarabia are now Ukraine's territories) , it's a long and complicated history and it will take hours to write so it's just in brief, until fall of Soviet Union, Soviet Moldova just became a new state in 27th August 1992 (Republic of Moldova) and it got its independence as many other ex-soviet countries@@abhinavinsearchofthelost

Gypsies are 80% European and Middle Eastern by DNA. How does this make them Indian? You are completely wrong to say this. Upper Caste Indians originate from Iran and Russia, and they are today anywhere from 80-90% European and Iranian- does this mean they are the same as their Russian ancestors?

  • @PurnaRodman
    @PurnaRodman Жыл бұрын

DNA, of course, is important. But it can be misleading. For instance, if my father is half Indian and half European and my mother is also half and half (as I am), my DNA may come out mostly European, mostly Indian or half and half like them. I only get half of each parent, so I might only get the halfs that are mostly one ethinicity from both. Language and music is a stronger determinant. Arab speakers feel Arab, regardless of their actual DNA. German speakers feel German, even though many of them are from the pre-German tribes in that area.

Thank you for this video, I do believe that long time we lived in India, but this doesn’t prove we are actually Indians. Language doesn’t prove anything as many countries user based on Sanskrit. Many gypsy/Roma people beloved that we are lost tribe of Israel and due to living in exile for so many decades we nicknamed our self to Atsigan/Cigan which means untouchable in Hebrew language. Also many gypsy words are similar to old Hebrew as well. The genocide of gypsy/Jews is just proving that we are the same people with only difference that we call our self Roma/Gypsy/ sinti/.

I was telling you what this so called KZread genealogy expert had on his channel but after I saw your story I did Google it and most said they came from the Punjabi area so yes I do know now they are from your region. I imagine you know that your people originated northwest of where they are now several thousand years ago. When I had my genealogy done it came up less than 3% Romanian but does not say if it is Roma and even 3% was a surprise since that took away from the amount of Greek I was supposed to be (25%). Instead the 25% was divided up into about 16% Greek, 6% Italian and 3% Romanian.

Anything below 5% may not be accurate. Typically, testing companies post updates indicating changes. You just have to wait. The distinction between Italian and Greek also causes great difficulty. Societies, for the moment, are unable to distinguish well between Southern Italians and Greeks. So, you're probably just 25% Greek.

They become marginalised community in Europe ? They were outcast by upper caste groups in India already , they were lower caste people , today you will see so many groups or caste of banjars if you link them with Banjaras . These tribal groups are present everywhere Banjaras are very known word but Banjaras do have jatis within jatis . They have higher percentage of Indian ancestry because they are much closer to Dravidian natives of India . kalbelia of thar desert , loypita, pinjaras , bedni, Rao, Kurtis these are some tribals who are outcast by upper caste in ancient times . They become nomads because they had no home in India . These tribals group lives in outskirts of towns and villages in Rajasthan . Still these people not have changed much . They do have ST/SC benifits and other constitutional rights reserved. But these communities still suffering segregation , persecution , exploitation of all kind by dominated class group . I don't think anyone knows how these Indian actual marginalised community doing but i do find roma to be Indian but not sure if I ask will dominate caste groups in India accept other tribal Indian groups living in present day India ? Roma will never be Indian as their present day brother and sister living here with tag of outcast by upper/dominated caste groups. They were outcast in India and outside India they had gone through so much both in India and Europe . But their future belongs to Europe not in India . I don't think they should be identify about their ancestry as their history in India itself is of persecution and segregation . on going persecution of tribal groups in India its a sad reality.
