DMR Smartphone RFinder K1 Review And Demo Android DMR UHF

Ғылым және технология

Here is a video on my latest device which I use daily. The RFinder K1 UHF DMR Smartphone. A completely new design, new motherboard, great look and feel, and just a pleasure to have with me on a daily basis. You can see a video I made over a year ago on the model I had before this.

I have a M1DU unit now and like it. The K1 looks even better. However the latest software update killed half of the promiscuous mode, the radio used to hear both timeslots on the repeater (DCI c-bridge type MTR3000 not brandmeister) now only hears the timeslot you started promiscuous mode on. Great video Eric, love the channel. N8EFJ

For anyone that has one of these, particularly those in the UK : What is the RF output Power? Is the repeater database accurate for the UK/Europe - or just the US? Can it seamlessly use the mobile data when no repeater available? Can it be configured as a portable hotspot? Can it be configured for encryption (for those that hold a Notice Of Variation from the home office, permitting this) Does it include WiFi as well as mobile data? Can it act as a wireless AP for tethering a laptop to mobile data? I'm so tempted to buy a couple of these, but so many questions as it's a big investment. Any advice from users appreciated.

Are these radios still available? Looks like the only one left is the K1, and you can't get it in the US. Web-site looks like it hasn't been updated in a while. I'm interested in the K1, but don't want to invest if the company might be going out of business, or can't get US FCC approval if it is still a functioning company...

Getting closer to a TRBO radio that you can program in the field without a computer, I assume you can do that without cell coverage. Is it type accepted for FRS? By covering the HAM freqs I doubt it. And a removable antenna. I think I heard that FRS is now 2 watts?

Are these even available? Rfinder website says they're waiting on FCC approval. Maybe not required for ham use? Hmm don't know. Asked a couple of questions using the contact us link in late December. Haven't heard back yet. Only real compelling argument to me is the rfinder software the sidestep the code plug issue. Still not so sure about the phone and HT in one box. Might prefer something like a HT that could link to my phone wifi hotspot to use the software...

Can I use it with a scanner software? I'm a General Class (KM6ARC) and I want to do some 440 ham repeaters, but could benefit from FRS with lay people. My ultimate goal besides those basics is to listen to direct RF DMR and other advanced protocols not through delayed streaming services, but the live RF transmission. Is that possible? I am getting a Uniden BCD536HP for the vehicle eventually, but I need a phone sooner than that and really wanted to go silly with a ham phone. UHF High or Low for me? I totally subscribed.

If one of these companies making these things would sell just a basic 2m with the bands for 4G for American cell providers beyond AT&T then they might find a greater market than DMR but no 4G. those who only casually operate from time to time would probably prefer to have the data service from their provider over DMR.

You can edit each channel on the radio using the touch screen, and i was told that there isn't any programming cable or software for the radio. The only fast way to program it is to pay $12.99 a year, unless he increases his rates, then it could be more. Rfinder app, is not part of the radio, you install it and pay for it.

First I should say I am an Android guy. Why I am are for reasons not really required for this discussion, but I think one or more of my reasons might crossover here and answer your question. The primary reason is basically because Android can be licensed by many different hardware vendors (within a specified criteria). The iPhone operating system is property of Apple and they simply do not license their operating systems to other hardware manufacturers. I think we saw how long Apple let others build hardware and license the MAC OS years ago (not long). An iPhone and an Android phone are probably 80% the same hardware "under the hood" and thus very similar phones hardware wise. The differences being obviously the look, feel, and function of the operating system, and the hardware tweaks that do set the different phones apart (e.g. camera systems, screens, etc.). So the short answer is I bet they would make one tomorrow if Apple would license their operating system. Like you said the user base is large and is the preference of many. But also like all things Apple I am sure it would take the price point up considerably only in the operating system licensing fees and probably not much if at all in hardware costs. I read somewhere that not too many years ago Google was charging less than $1 per unit for licensing. I am thinking Apple would be a bit more... LOL To your other question I think the phone carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.) would not matter much in this case. Perhaps there might be an issue with Sprint, but that is based on some very dated information stored in my brain. LOL Your Verizon SIM (SIM size?) should function in this device and this device should work on their network, in my opinion. I brought my pure Android phone over to Verizon (previous on AT&T) in 2018 and it is a model they do not sell or support for that matter. Works fine. Now my 2 cents why I would NOT buy this device, though I really want one. I think the phone side of the device is less than spectacular to say the least. The hardware specifications, the camera, and the version of the operating system are probably at best 2015 tech. I am sure you as an iPhone user would be disappointed overall, even if your current iPhone is 3 years old. Additionally it is a single band radio and pointed out elsewhere in these comments having VHF is not only nice it is a necessity in parts of the country. Even a $30 Baofeng radio is dual band. For me this being an everyday device (phone) it is probably a little too bulky, especially in some social and business settings. The RF Finder software and the integrated functionality is the biggest compelling reason to own this device. Hands down if that is your priority it is a very valid reason to own this device in my opinion. I wish RF Finder would license their software and functionality to a quality radio manufacturer. I would love to have a highly capable dual band two way radio that has the RF Finder functionality. Even if that radio did not have cell network capability for database updates etc. imagine if the radio would connect to your existing phone via WiFi or Bluetooth to bring it those capabilities. I think that would be a winner and for much less money overall. In addition you can stay up to date on cell phone tech (which moves more rapidly than two way ham radio) without throwing away your two way every 2 to 5 years.

I just ordered the RF Finder K-1 for UHF DMR/Analog, with 4GLTE Smartphone. I have for a few months an Anytone 868 HT dual band DMR/Analog, HT, but I like this better all-in-one, and I might get off my Android Samsung Galaxy Note 8, maybe as a sale to a dealer to recoup some of it's cost. I have used a CSI-CS 800 dual band DMR/Analog mobile, which was hard to program, and when I sold it back to my local NYC area dealer, adjusted for a lower price. I also had a well made UHF DMR/Analog, Hytera HT from Gigaparts for a while, so I am experienced with DMR mode. I also started with various D-STAR, I Comm and Kenwood, and Yaesu Fusion models, but left those modes a while ago because of lack of activity in the areas of NYC and Florida, which I have been operating in.

wqar833 This radio RFinder K1 User Manual has to be the smallest manual I have ever had. Trying to use it. I had to get a magnifier to try to read the small font print. This has to be the most complex radio I have ever bought. Such what size of the two mini Scan-disk and one just a bit larger under the battery as in what size 10gb or much larger 64gb or larger. There is much to say about there 'FACEBOOK' users, as I have never and will never use any kind of site like this ever. There are so many things that I do not care for or like, the number one thing is the User Manual. In all my years in the Ham Radio service, I have got a Step By Step User Manual as like my Kenwood D-74A, now if you compare manuals the Knwd D-74A has it hands down for sure. I'm totally lost as to what to do next with this RFinder K-1 radio, and another thing which cellular service do I get????? I know I going off the track but I'm venting a bit over the hill.

I think you forgot to say that there is a yearly fee for using the main feature of the radio. Rfinder app costs $12.99 to use with the radio, it is not part of the radio. I also had trouble getting the cell internet access to work in the AT&T store., and I'm waiting for Robert to respond to email, since the person who answers the phone said that there was an issue with AT&T, but he didn't know what it was and to write an email to Rob. I did see an app for FM radio, but I could not get even one radio station to be heard, i scanned up and down the FM band, and heard only static. I'm just about getting tired of all the surprises with this radio. It's made pretty well, but that's where it ends. It will be a while ,and a few bucks before I get to use the radio. Robert figured a way to get yearly money from every radio sold. The radio is half of what it is without tyh Rfinder app., and maybe even less, since there is no programming cable for it, so how do you get around the fee to find repeaters? You can't, pay Robert his money for the life of the radio, or send it back. He should have explained the hidden costs of owning the radio. I was told that the phone had 32gb of memory, but it looks more like 2 gb, since without me doping much to it, it is using 1.1Gb of memory, and has 776 Mb left. There is no way that phone will have 32gb in it unless I install it myself.

I still have not heard from him about why my AT&T cell internet won't work. AT&T said that all the settings were correct for what they do. So I won't get this phone fully working until Robert responds to me request for help.

I'm using AT&T right now, no problem. This is what you will probably have to do. Log into your account and enter the IMEI of another phone that you know, onto your account. For instance, My cell account at AT&T thinks it is an Iphone 6S, AT&T doesnt care what it is, the SIM card works in any unlocked phone, but the IMEI of this phone is unrecognized.

If icom made a radio and charged you 6,7, or $800 for it, and then a fee to use it every year. How many people would buy it, especially if they gave you no heads up before you bought it? It's not the money as much as it was a surprise to find out after I owned it.

11w5151? This is got to be the worst User Manual I have ever used. The first thing is the size of the font it's got to be #4/5 as you half to use a magnifying glass to read the very small print. Then there is no 'How to set the K1 up. There is nothing in the User Manual on anything to do with the setup. For my hard earned money, this was a BAD buy as there is nothing telling you how to set up the k1 for use in today's world. If you want more buy one and you'll see what I'm talking all about.....

What are you wanting to set up? The RFinder App? Its pretty standalone once you enter your callsign and personal info.

While I like the concept behind it, I will not buy this radio, or in any way support the business, snce I cannot even see if he has my repeater listed on his site without my permission without a subscription.

I'm confused. Are you stating that he needs your permission to list your repeater, or are you saying that you can't see his content without paying for a subscription, or some combination of these?

Repeater trustees should have the right to decide what sites list their repeaters, and the basic information about a repeater should be searchable without registration; those are two problems I have with RFinder. The other is that it's well known, or should be, that they have engaged in website scraping to acquire information (some trustees have deliberately posted inaccurate information on another site to prove this), so the claims that they are the most accurate and up to date is untrue.

Why should repeater trustees have that right? Doesn't that essentially run contrary to amateur radio having been established for open, public communication? Aren't repeaters on the amateur bands free for anyone licensed for those bands to use? Amateur radio is not for your private person to person communications, it's for open communications. Literally anyone is allowed to listen in, and anyone licensed is allowed to participate. If you want private communications then either purchase licensing for some non-amateur spectrum or subscribe to some other service that has purchased such spectrum.

FCC rules do allow a repeater trustee to restrict usage of a specific repeater to a group of specific users, though there are many more repeaters that are open than are classified as closed. If you don't like that, get the FCC to ban closed repeaters.

Sure. And if I don't have the codes to activate the repeater, then it's just spectrum, same as any other operator. If anything those whom operate closed repeaters should want the frequencies published so that when they're listed as repeaters other operators don't those frequencies for simplex communication. The repeater trustee does now "own" the spectrum, they're entitled to use it same as anyone else.
