DMP #39 - Internal Arts in Bali

Damo Mitchell looking at the development of the group here in Bali over the course of the third semester. This is a talk about the overall plan for student development over the previous 18 months and then onwards into their future. The students development is based on working through external mechanics, then on into Dan Tian and Qi development followed by learning to develop the 'internal body' of arts such as Taijiquan and Xingyiquan.

    Whether we can accept qi or not... I was formerly a hardened life-long atheist and did not believe in anything spiritual. Then in my mid-40s I met the dragon god Tiamat IRL and she asked me to follow her. Now I can pretty much accept anything. Since I met Tiamat my entire body has been pulsing with energy, and I'm always feeling electric currents moving through me, especially up my left leg. It usually starts just above my ankle and then flows upwards into the rest of body. Also, I recently went to an accupuncturist and when she put a needle in my right leg, just below my knee, she was electrically shocked and jumped back across the room. Simultaneously I felt like a little lightning bolt hit my leg and an intense electric current flowed through my leg and down into my foot for about 20 seconds. I guess this was qi? She wore gloves with me from then on. Anyway I am interested in the spiritual aspects of training, so I signed up for your foundation course! I'm older now and have no problem taking things slower and easier. I have bought all your books and am enjoying your extensive theoretical knowledge, which I appreciate most. Thank you very much.

    So I get the process goes something like this: 1. External training, build strength „springiness“, discipline, punching. This is to prepare the body and get basic skill in martial arts. Build it such that it is compatible with the internal arts. 2. Build the Dan tien, prepare the energetic body to work. Learn some forms - why not, learn to open sink and release. Springiness, stretches can be transferred in these forms. Open the body to create space inside. 3. Mobilise the insides. (Weirdest bit so far perhaps.) Learn to have the inside move the outside. Most important thing in internal arts. Do loads of standing (correctly). Create internal body standing. Do „stupid exercises“: little movements that look stupid from the outside and are highly sophisticated in the inside, they open the body up. (Takes about one year) 4. Develop power with Xing Yi. … …

    4. Develop power using Xing Yi. 5 fists, Xian Ti: After Body and Mind are together (Xing Yi) strength comes very fast. This is then polished further. 5. Develop the mind with Buddhist teachings 6. Some Chinese Medicine.

    Move on to Push Hands Tui Shou, after they know how to do Xing Yi power. At some point everyone has a Basis in Ba Gua, Tai Chi, Xing Yi along Qi Gong Meditation etc.

    I doubt it actually. This is most likely my final time teaching martial arts in this way. After Bali, I wish to fashion my life with a slightly more gentle pace 😁 Even considering bowing out of public teaching to a large degree after this.

    Damo, what do you mean by "Consolidation" of the Dan Tien?

  • @LotusNeiGong

    @LotusNeiGong

    25 күн бұрын

    The Dan Tian needs to gather Qi and condense in order to be useful. At the start, the Qi is too thin to be of use and that’s why we consolidate :)

    @@LotusNeiGong If you almost died, I am screwed, haha.Do you think the increased energy of spiritual practice can make the margin of error smaller, making what would be a slowly progressing illness in many people something potentially more volatile in the practitioner, almost like the spirit wants good health or death to continue its journey, no longer content with the drawn out unwellness of so many modern people?
