This is my favourite performance of this sadly neglected symphony. I love especially how it seems like all the players have so much fun playing it. The emotional range of this amazing symphony is astounding.

I attended a performance of this sympony yesterday performed by the Münchner Philharmoniker conducted by Tugan Sokhiev. It was a beautiful evening, contrasted by Mahler's 4th Symphony. Both can be felt as "spring symphonies", one written by one who found his place, happy - the other emontionally torn, threatened in his very existence. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this recording, too. What a great piece of music!

Indeed, Shostakovich seems to belong among about 5 greatest symphony composers ever. 15 syms and at least 2/3 of them are absolutely first class works of 20th century - we can hardly say something like that about anyone else after Mahler.

I don't know why the 6th symphony is not performed more often - IMO it is one of his finest! You can always rely on PaavoJarvi to give a good performance, he is one of an increasingly rare breed of conductors who never disappoints. Very good playing from this young orchestra even if their sound is a bit lightweight.

Just as his 15th symphony is ostensibly playful but covertly malevolent, his 6th symphony seems sad and heavy but reveals itself to be one of his lighter works. It distantly reminds me of some of the feel of Mahler's 4th, one of his nature symphonies, though I know this is not apparent. I think it gets dismissed because it may get lumped in with the 5th or the 8th, or simply forgotten. But a careful listen and the delicate beauty of the first movement reveals itself followed by its raucous and genuinely scherzos. The first movement also seems to have echos of Haydn and that era of music, despite its obvious departures.

Interesting to see the Spanish 1st flute from the Järvi's Frankfurt Orchestra in this orchestra, 13:38 . I'm not surprised, since she's excellent. big oops for the trumpet 5:20. The horn solo 14:16 could use a little more subtlety, too.

Agree re my favorite flautist Clara Andrada de la Calle. And it's interesting that one of the violists reminds me of the composer's son Maxim. I thought the trumpeter only committed a small slur at the beginning of his note at 5:19 which didn't detract from the performance; nor did the horn passage at 14:16, although I don't recall how it sounded in other performances I've heard; I'd have to make a direct comparison.

How many more nits have you picked today? Actually I can't say how the composer intended it, but I daresay he was trying for an unorthodox structure in this symphony, which essentially omits a first movement. I think Bernstein in his recording, conversely took the final two movements too slowly, and I prefer Jarvi's view.

The tempos of the third movement are weird too, along with some messy playing throughout. I love this symphony and it deserves to be heard more, but I feel like it also deserves better than what Mr. Järvi and company gave it.
