This team can play in October if everyone plays up to their potential. 7 HRs tonight was a blast to watch.

Cherington's an odd duck. You'd think that a guy who's tasted World Series success would do EVERYTHING in his power to get it back.

The way management handles pitching changes is baffling. Pitcher doing well then gets pulled then next pitcher gives a 4 ball walk and then we end up losing. Ridiculous

This season is nearing the point of being officially over. The Pirates now need to take 3 of 4 against the Mets to start. Then the Brewers come in. The issue is the consistency needed to carry the rest of the season isn't going to happen internally and any moves made externally will be half hearted and more of the same, retread projects. I did a little more work on Cherington and his world series in Boston. The facts are the main core of the team was already in place when he got there (they were loaded). The only thing he did was cut salary from some players and spend less in other areas when adding pieces. Boston finished in last place 3 of 4 years he was there if I remember correctly. So it makes sense he's the GM for Pittsburgh now. He made atrocious investments with the money he did have to spend (35 million in the off season). You get what you pay for when it comes to players, GM, manager, etc. I won't even get into how the game was managed yesterday on the field. The Cleveland Guardians had the best record in the AL as of the other day, the big difference is while they had the 26th ranked payroll, they do hire well when it comes to a GM and scouts, and also manage very well. The Pirates seek "experience" which is always about retread projects with players that had glory who are past it at this point of their career. The Guardians are one of the youngest teams in baseball and are getting it done. The guys they have on the field aren't going to turn it around holistically and be able to win at the rate needed to make a wild card spot. And there is the rub, they have the wrong investments from the beginning. To make an investment analogy, they are buying penny stocks and perceived "value" companies while real teams are buying quality growth names and blue chips. Game over.

What about Shelton? The little things are completely overlooked. For example, when Cruz hits anything in the air deep in the outfield, he stands at home and watches. Then, when it's not a homer, he starts racing for second. That's in between strikeouts. Sammy Sosa did that once and I watched as he stood at home, only to have the ball hit off the right field wall and he barely made it to first. Just unforgivable.

Making tactical incremental improvements to tweak the process after it has been running poorly for 3 months is one of the keys to success. So by doing nothing he is virtually assuring himself a failing grade at the end of the 2024 campaign.

I don't know why people keep saying "upper management" when it's been proven year after year, with multiple GMs and managers that the owner is simply unwilling to spend the money to take a promising team to the next level.

This management team needs replaced immediately and I'm not gonna pass by on Cutch not being clutch when it counts. He's had a great career but has never been a big RBI guy. Not once in his career driving in 100+ rbi's I believe just once he drove in 90+ and batting 3rd most of his Pirate career. This year 12 home runs but only 25 rbi's which is near the bottom for this team.Taylor and Grandal need dfa'd immediately. You have a complete future starting staff in the minors with Ashcraft, Chandler, Harrington, Barco, Solomento and Burrows. Trade a few of them for a first baseman and outfielder but this GM thinks all these below .200 hitters are gonna turn it aroumd.

DK: As a dedicated Pirate fan up until yesterday, I’m officially done with this Pirates organization: the owner, the GM, the field manager, the coaches, etc. I’ve enjoyed the players, I greatly appreciate their personal character, and I’ve seen talent that has unfortunately (and too often) descended into unexpected and even mind-boggling regression. As a result, I no longer recognize this organization as a legitimate MLB team owner, or the employees responsible for the unavoidable dire future of this team (as long as they remain employed). I don’t anticipate any constructive organizational changes in the foreseeable future, which has led me to this final and irreversible decision. Poor roster construction. No run support for excellent outings by the starters. Very inconsistent and/or nightmarishly inadequate offense. A total lack of intelligent game planning or effective in-game decision making. A lack of engagement from the field manager during games. Poor bullpen management. Continual passivity. “Sunday lineups.” A lack of urgency. No particular interest in beating division rivals. The list goes on and on and on. If you can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. I have 3 tickets to an early August game that would require some travel. If you can post the address of a charitable organization in Pittsburgh that I can donate the tickets to, I would love to provide the tickets to a family who can’t afford the cost of attending a game. They are very good seats. Any shred of hope that I had remaining for this team finally dissolved yesterday. Good luck to Skenes, Jones, Keller, Reynolds, Cruz, Gonzales, etc.― there’s absolutely no question that they’re going to need a LOT of it going forward. The starting rotation in particular I’ve been worried about― these talented pitchers have already been negatively impacted very early on by a sustained and even gross lack of support. This current FIASCO of an organization is wrongly (and delusionally) representing itself as one fielding a competitive professional baseball team. WRONG -- it will never be that ― not as long as its leaders and their song of complacency remain the same. I'm done.

This isn't an airport, no need to announce your departure. Although I get it, putting in Santana a 7.something ERA pitched in a high stakes game to stay in contention and against a division opponent no less was the white flag 🏳️ of surrender if you ask me. That move is purely on Shelton and reflects that this Front Office and GM have no intention of actually going for a playoff run when the door was wide open. I won't be surprised if we get busted open bad by the Mets.

I will compartmentalize this teams lack of competitiveness with what they are, just an up and down team that plays meh baseball and occasionally looks like a playoff team. I'm so glad I didn't piss my money away buying the MLB package to watch this club.

Trotting out Taylor, what goes as a "catcher" on this club, Triollo and other mendoza line guys in July is what is unforgiveable. With this pitching, the days of taking fliers on guys and just having them on the roster should be over. I could even see it is a guy was having a crap season and they paid him 20 million a year. But they paid all these guys peanuts. It should be easy to DFA guys making under 5 million, but that is how cheap the Pirates are. They need their "value" for literally every guy they sign. We see it every year. Look at that catcher last year who they kept until July and he hit barely worse than these guys. It is the lack of trying trotting out the same failed players every day like ground hog day despite having a good core which is infuriating. There is no excuse for it.

I don't wanna beat this thought into the ground, but what's the point of having challenges, and losing them, if you can just yell from the dugout and get another challenge? In football, there's a penalty for using too many challenges, in hockey its a penalty for getting a challenge wrong, why is it only the act of losing the challenge in baseball, and then there being no repercussions for asking for extra challenges?
