    As a user of a iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Pocket 3 I can tell you no way the phone is better. Even recording Pro Res to a ssd the Pocket is just better as it should be using a 1 inch sensor. Only advantage to the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the fact that it’s pretty much always in my pocket. Take your phone video and play it on a 70 inch 4k tv and you’ll definitely see the lack of quality.

    Yep. The main lens is pretty good in controlled light when shooting prores. But in the real world phones don’t cut it ergonomically. I especially hate using them with gimbals, pocket 3 is a completely different thing.

    FYI, the Osmo P3 has a setting to begin recording automatically when you turn it on. So..flip the screen, recording begins in 1 or 2 seconds.

    Shooting in low light is way better on the Osmo Pocket. Digital stabilisation reach its limits there.

    No smartphone gives you this image quality, at least the quality that you have in 10 bit d-log (the standard profile 8 bit is rather bad, in my opinion). The fact of having this quality with a 1-inch sensor at low light, without those horrible artifacts from electronic stabilization, I would say is enough for the choice compared to any smartphone, including iPhone 15 Pro (which has excellent video quality but only if used in prores log with external SSD and still continues to be rather poor in low light)

    the pocket 3 is less sharp bedcause it has a sensor for 4k video similar to the A7s3 has a disadvantage over the A7IV which downsamples video. also compared to the pocket 2 which has more pixels to work with.

    The pocket 3 has another major problem: rolling shutter. It is noticeable when filming outside of a train but also when turning the camera to selfie mode. All straight lines are slanted. This is strange because the sensor is just a 4k sensor so readout speed should not be a problem, but unfortunately it is. So a smartphone might be the better choice...

    @@instatripThat's what ND filters and pro settings on the camera to control shutter and iso are for. Honestly, you should not be having issues like that, if so, very minimal at worst. It's a 1" CMOS sensor with under 10 megapixels for smoother recording, faster processing power, and low light capability. There are other good informative videos on the P3 which showcase it's true potential. This truly isn't one of them.

    4K/60 10bit with the 1" sensor is better PQ than an iPhone. The only downside for me is the lack of weatherproofing.

    Thank you for your post 👍👍👍. I take video on causal occasions and for sharing on social media, more like vlogging style. I agree most part of it. If I may add, I don’t like Pocket 3’s lens flare and I found it a bit disturbing kind. Otherwise, it is my go to video camera in a low light condition. My standard gear: when lighting condition is good, then I use GoPro 9 (often with a media mod and Sennheiser MK200) and occasionally with with Max lens mod, and almost always with a Magnetic Swivel Clip as a handle or table tripod, or clip it on my sling bag or on my jackets or shirts for carrying it around. For a very quick takes with a longer focus lens, I may use iPhone 13 Pro of back cam lens. When in a low light condition, Pocket 3 without hesitation . When I want unusual looking video, Insta360 One X (but in a low light condition, it is not ideal at all). For hard to reach small places like inside a glass, a jar, a bag etc, Insta360 Go II (but one needs optimal lighting condition). I have my own measurement of quick operational practicality. I measure how many physical steps I need to take from being in a carried stage (e.g. in a bag, a pants pocket, carried around your neck) to shooting and back to the carrying stage, plus time needed to do so. GoPro is fastest in my case. E.g. 1. unclip from my sling bag, 2. check the lens clean, press the power on bottom to start shooting. iPhone takes longer. 1. take out of a pocket, 2. check lens is clean, 2b. most of the time I need to clean the lens, 4. swipe for camera, 5. choose video mode, 6. shoot. Pocket 3: 1. take out of my pocket, 2. take it out of a carrying case (and im always careful not to stress the gimbal when taking it out of the case), 3.put back a carrying case to my pocket, 4. flip screen to start shooting, 4b. But often I need to use the gimbal joy stick to set the camera angle. I have Rhodes Wireless Go but hardly use for my style of shooting but almost always go for the Sennheiser. The reason is it takes a few steps too many for me to start shooting, I.e. 1. power on the receiver, 2. Power on the transmitter, 3. check the connection established, 4. check the gopro screen if Mike input working . But with Pocket 3, and enabling. It just need to power on on the wireless mic, less steps or hassle. I like that.

    Fresh perspectives and valid critiques! I think one area worth mentioning is the degraded performance of digital stabilization in low light. Your night shots with the Pocket 3 looked awesome. I’m curious why you chose iso 400 for your max. Does noise shoot up at 800?

  • @explorewithgeoff
    @explorewithgeoff7 ай бұрын

    The Pocket 3 has a 1 inch sensor with large pixels, meaning it's great in low light. No phone can come close to that. Also the gimbal is very different from electronic stabilisation like you get in a phone. Try filming with your phone in low light at a slow shutter speed and the footage will be unusable. The only downside of the Pocket 3 is the fixed aperture and focal length. I can live with the fixed aperture as with that wide angle lens giving a wide DoF, it's often not required to close the aperture down anyway. Even without the ability to zoom into something, I'd still choose almost anything over an overpriced phone with tiny sensor and full of over-processing. Oh and a lack of weather-proofing is a downside too, but that's the same for any gimbal that I know of.

I was going to get it for live streaming but 166 minutes isn’t anywhere near long enough & if you cant change the battery over while live streaming then it’s useless unless you want to stream for under 166 minutes, which it’s probably great to use while doing bush walks running at a protest anything where your moving fast, but live streaming can go from a few hours to 24 hours without it stopping, S23 is the best for live streaming I have my IPhone 14 pro max I use for everyday use but the Samsung S23 for live streaming

    I think you're getting the terms "better" and "practical" mixed up. And, I dont even think a phone is more practical. If you vlog with it you can either use a poor quality selfie camera, or use the main one to have no idea what you're filming. No wireless monitoring, no face tracking. The only thing that is more practical about phones is that it's faster. And maybe that you can shoot in the rain with it, but how often do you need to do it. Pocket 3 is highly practical and good quality. iPhone is decent when the light is good but once it gets a bit dark or you're shooting indoors, it's quite unusable.

    Respectfully I completely disagree with your bias towards smart phones. The footage off a smart phone is not as nice as the pocket 3 because its just handheld. Its shaky and looks crap. Also its quite bulky to film with as well. I can just put the pocket in a jacket and whip it out and also its quite handy to be able to flip the gimbal direction. You get much better pan and sweep motions with the pocket. I wish they would give the pocket an bended handle attachment

    This is a bit like someone making a video about whether a hammer is better than a screwdriver. A gimbal camera and a phone are two completely different animals for different creative purposes. To make a valid comparison, you'd have to mount the phone on a gimbal. Gimbals are not just about tracking and stabilising. They enable a range of shots that cannot be achieved in any other way. For instance - sorry to bore people who have seen me use this example in other comments - recently I had the pleasure of making a video about an Indian festival being held in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. At night, hundreds of people were dancing in the festival field, lit by floodlights, while (very loud!) music played. But beside the crowd a small child sat in a plastic chair, eating an ice cream cone. So with the aid of the Pocket 2 (I don't have the 3 yet, I'm saving up!) on its remote control extension rod, I was able to take in the dancers from a high level, monitoring via the app on a phone attached to the rod, then swing down to a closeup of the child with the ice cream, using the tilt lock of the gimbal to ensure the camera didn't end up pointing at the grass. Then up in the air again to watch the dancing continue. With a phone you could do it but it would have to be on a gimbal with an extension and you'd probably not be able to see much of what it was shooting. And it would be rather conspicuous. Likewise with an action camera - EIS isn't good in that kind of lighting, and again, you'd need a gimbal of some sort to make it work. So - phone or Pocket 3 choice depends very much on the task in hand. Yup, there are occasions when a phone might be the better choice. And vice versa. First define the task, or the most likely range of tasks, then deploy the right camera for the job. Is anyone still awake? :)

    This is an odd video to make to me. It's basically taking a product YOU or someone like you wouldn't normally care to use and tell why you wouldn't care to use it. It's as if there is an assumption that most people that buy the Pocket 3 are wanting it to replace their cell phone. If that's the case, that's new to me. Because I saw this as something for a vlogger or even help in making an indie film or something like that. Even for marketing products and making videos that require a person to stand in front and make some type of video. I mean, I'm a photographer and that's like me saying hey, it's quicker to pull out my Samsung S21+ than it is my D-SLR. That makes no sense to compare. Besides, there's no cell phone that I know of that has the features and even quality as the Pocket 3. It's a tech that has a different purpose. So the phone ISN'T probably better for most people that buy the Pocket 3. Just like I know a cell phone isn't better than my D-SLR and all it can do. Different strokes scenarios.

    The OSMO Action 4 is the camera that should be compared with the GoPro. As far as the iPhone comparison, all cameras are going to be challenged in that comparison, especially when the comparison is framed as "practical". I use the Pocket 3 to augment my Sony A7IV. So any movement from one location to another location I use the Pocket 3. Basically, I take advantage of the gimbal, which is why this thing exists.

    First off, you're comparing apples and oranges when comparing the OP3 to a GoPro and an iPhone. Completely different is the fixed focus of the GoPro. Then you compare an ALWAYS horizon level OP3 with an iPhone that is NEVER 100% leveled, plus a 1" sensor with both other candidates. That isn't a proper comparison.

    Tbh...a phone on a gimbal will do everything an Osmo 3 or 2 will do, including face tracking. Imo, the main advantage of an Osmo Pocket of any type is that you can film more discreetly in unsafe areas or places like malls where you are technically not allowed to film. For filming discreetly a Pocket 2 is actually better than a 3 as it is smaller and it does not have that horizontal screen that widens the profile.

  • @RyanOsmond

    @RyanOsmond

    I'd agree with a lot of that. Perhaps the phone is more discreet though as everyone has one. Pocket 2 is definitely smaller. The real advantage here is the sensor in low light.

    I think the Pocket 3 is amazing! I probably won’t buy it because I take a lot of video on my iPhone and the Pocket 3 seems to “just” do the same but mostly better, while the Insta360 does things my phone simply can’t. So that’s gonna be my next purchase. But if money wasn’t an issue, I’d buy both

    I think the P3 is a bit of a niche product. The scenario I can think I'd use it, is for my small Ratrig slider for food video slides, it could track the centre of the product as I slide. Even then there is a problem tho, as its 20mm Id have to either crop in post or use the 2X zoom, so the footage may not look that good. Im not sure tho as I only shoot vertical for social media, it may be ok, Ive not seen anyone try it.

    I would say it depends on your financial situation. If you have the money to burn for sure, it's a great tool. My point was that if you're financially stretched and have a new-ish phone, that should suffice. I think everyone feels the pressure to just run out and buy the latest DJI products (me included) but I wanted to try and look at it from a different perspective. Hope it was somewhat valuable.

    The lightweight camera with small footprint, clear and stable video, the nice low light shooting blinded me for some time - but then I realised that as a family vacation shooter this camera is USELESS if it does not offer OPTION of infinite focus. If I cannot get my subject and the surroundings ALL in focus, then that defeats the whole concept of vacation shooting - the bokeh effect (background blurring) is a massive hindrance than of benefit. Maybe if you are showcasing a product or person. Or trying cinematic storytelling - you may find it useful. But for millions of simple vacationers like me - who just desired crisp super stable video while travelling, taking in all of the surroundings - this lack of universal focus is a deal breaker. Lucky I stopped just short of making payment for it.

    As a pocket 2 user who used it for vlogs, I agree strongly with phone being better. What makes the Pocket great is also its biggest flaw which is The Gimbal ,due to the fragile nature of it I always found myself having to bring along the hard shell that the pocket comes with and storing it in there for protection of the gimbal i would never put it in my pocket without it as that will be a disaster waiting to happen and because of this whenever there was something i wanted to film quickly id miss the shot due to having to take it out the shell , wait for camera to boot up etc. As a vlogger I found zero use case of the gimbal besides transitioning from selfie mode to shooting whats ahead of me. I wont even make this a debate about quality because the best looking camera is the one you always have with you and the Pocket just isnt that atleast it was not for me. I wanted a camera where i could shoot a scene for 1 or 2 minutes put it in my pocket move along until i see something interesting or have an interesting conversation and the put it back after but the tedious and time consuming nature of taking it out of the case and waiting for it to boot just made it an inconvienience to bring the camera with.

    I still have my original Osmo Pocket and the battery life is as good as when I got it. Be good and don't fast charge too often and when not in use for long periods store it with 40% battery charge. The one good thing about the Osmo Pocket is stealth. People tend not to notice it as much as using a phone so you don't get people constantly staring at you while in use. Down side is you do need to check you can unlock the Pocket with your phone when you get it. Not all smart phones will work with the Osmo Pocket.

    A gimble trumps optical iS everytime. An iPhone has as good video I'm told. A GoPro is water proof. The Pocket 3 in filmmaking can match perfectly with any DJi drone. Also active track is amazing. It also has incredible low light. It uses DLogM which is still very contrasty and not very flat at all. Put this thing on a boom pole and use active track and you get amazing footage. If you need that journalistic instant shooting experience ok maybe the iPhone is what you need but even then an iPhone has to be in you hand and also what if you're actually on the phone. Remember it is a phone at the end of the day.

Under the sun the screen becomes black and unusable. you cannot replace the battery and you must always carry a power bank, It doesn't have a one-inch sensor or the same stabilization above all in low light. I would also add that a pro costs double and that it is not a dedicated device.
