DJI Mini 2 ND Filters - How I use Drone ND Filters

DJI Mini 2 ND Filters - How I use Drone ND Filters. This is how I do it. It's easier than you think.

So, exposing with ND filters on your drone. It's simple. IF you have ND filters for your drone, use the 180 degree rule, otherwise there is no point in having them. So, if you're on 25fps, double that for your shutter - 1/50. Use the lowest ISO you can, so start with ISO 100, during the day, if it's cloudy sunny stick on the ND16, if it's sunny ND32, if it's overcast quite badly ND8 or lower. That's basically it. This is an artistic choice (to an extent), so if you want a blown out sky, go for it, if you want to silhouette the trees with a moody sky, go for it, you're in charge! Any questions at all about this, hit me. No I don't use zebras on my drone, no I don't use the histogram on my drone, ever. I set it so it looks good to me. I hope this helps.

    You mentioned in passing that the shutter speed and ISO are fixed, so it's probably worth emphasizing that the camera needs to be put into manual exposure mode to use ND filters, rather than rely on auto-exposure mode, which is the default mode in pretty much all point-n-shoot cameras - including those in drones. If the camera is auto-exposure mode then it will simply compensate for the presence of the ND filter by reducing shutter speed and/or increasing ISO (or, more rarely in drones, opening the aperture), so highlights will still be blown out. It's also worth emphasizing that if ISO is greater than 200 at the desired shutter speed with a given ND filter then use a lighter filter to get ISO down to 100 (e.g., if ISO is 200 and SS is 1/60 with an ND-8 filter then switch to an ND-4 filter to set ISO to 100).

    I just got the skyreat nd filters in the mail today and have been shooting video without them since I got the mini2 a few months ago. Wow at the difference of the video. Should have had them from the start because the clarity in the 2 videos I shot today is amazing. I used the 16 at first then the 64, 64 was fairly darker when facing towards the ground but when I pointed up at the sky I could see every cloud in the sky and the blue was so clear.

    Man, Phillip, I heeded your advice (your channel is a wealth of knowledge and that’s what we’re here for!) - the Mini 2 is a great, great piece of technology. It feels as if it flies like my larger drones that I’ve owned in the past, and the imagery is wonderful. Technique advice regarding practicing slow steady movements and dolly zoom...I always took controls for granted on the larger drones as the movements were always smooth. Not SO much so on the Mini, you need to really work with it a bit and add some finesse to your controls - which, following your direction - works out very well. Practice will make perfect - i uploaded a recent video to my channel displaying the results. And Dolly zoom...psh... easy in theory, super easy in practice...WITH ENOUGH PRACTICE. Folks, you can’t give it up after 2-3 tries. Practice! Lastly - filters. Hundreds of videos, tons of repeated information...but these videos get the point across for me. Filters for my Osmo Action work wonders on my footage, I ended up grabbing some for the Mini. So, thank you for enlightening us with your experience...time to fly!

    If you're shooting manual, try doubling your shutter speed for a one stop decrease in exposure. It will violate the 180 deg rule and decrease the motion blur but still looks good. For example: if you've originally planned for 25fps/1/50, move the shutter to 1/100. If that's not enough, double it again. Try to keep it as a simple multiple of the frame rate.

    @@PhillipSkraba So I was checking out ND's for ND/CPL's and came up with something that might interest you. I take before and after shots of my work, but the sun screws up half my shots with the glare as I apply coatings. I have no choice to take a strait on shot of their house so my angle is predetermined and the sun does not take orders. I bought a CPL for my DSLR and figured I'd get some for the Mavic too. My customers will love the aerial shot of their house as a bonus but the glare sucks. I noticed other guys were pretty much saying land the drone to get the polarization right. Waste of battery and more importantly, time. So I just got my cheap Skyreat ND/CPL's just now and started messing with them. I figured you already know the angle of your shot you plan to take of the subject/work as the altitude is irrelevant with the CPL. So what I done was use one of the other CPL's to get the angle that I figure the drone will be while leaving the CPL mounted on the gimbal to cut down on fiddling/damage as Im reckless. (Yes, I land in the snow too as its Canada). By standing at the approximate angle you want of your subject/work with the spare CPL, then find the sweet spot to set the CPL on the drone with the matching mark without ripping the mounted CPL off the flimsy gimbal. Works like a charm. Just thought if you ever do a CPL vid you might incorporate that idea. It was a bridge I was going to cross when I got to it, but solved it on the ground as long as you have 2 CPL's. Cheers. Love your vids.

    I've watched like 3 different videos about ND filters and only yours finally clarified some things. So thank you! I'm only wondering if there's a sense of buying CPL or ND/PL? Are they really useful? I have CPL filter in my car's dashcam, and there I'd say it's just a MUST HAVE imo, because of the constant reflections on the windshield. But in the air on the drone? Hmm... I would love to hear what's your experience with these :)

  • @PhillipSkraba

    @PhillipSkraba

    3 жыл бұрын

    You're welcome. Well, I use them when flying in clear skies or over water, they get rid of some of the reflections and they pop the blue in the sky. I do need to dial them in on the ground and basically fly in a certain angle from the sun, but that's how a polariser works, on the ground of course you can quickly dial it in again. I find them useful and they make my images look great, so it's really down to you if and what kind of climate you shoot in.
