I need to fly a longer than one battery or line of sight shot. So, I'm thinking of setting a waypoint at my furthest reach on flight #1. Then I will drive over to that location, and hopefully have the P4 fly up to that saved waypoint, and continue to another waypoint as flight #2. Finally, one more time to complete flight #3. Does this sound practical? thanks

Great tutorial Jeff. May I suggest a different method? I would fly high and far away first, see my lane and select the "first" waypoint, and then fly forward and down (close to you) and set my "second" waypoint. Then, I would hit "Reverse" and get the same shot. The difference would be that I wouldn't have to fly backwards through trees without obstacle avoidance when plotting my path. Might as well fly "forward" through the trees when setting your points and use your camera to avoid obstacles.

Is there a REVERSE option on the DJI Go 4 app when using Waypoints? I'm having a hard time finding it.

I am wanting to buy the Mavic pro 2 or 2 Zoom for filming action sports, mostly mountain biking. This feature is really important and I film in woodland and would like to plan my shots by flying the drone down parts of the trail. Am I right in thinking I can do as you did, make several waypoints manually, but can I fly the way points manually increasing/decreasing the speed manually) of the drone during waypoint mode? This is really important to me so I can keep up with and slow down for the rider that I am filming. Thanks so much

Jeff, Thank you for sharing, I am trying to repeat my waypoint from week to week. It is a tad bit off from week one to week two. I have not shot week 3 yet. Any tips?

they are such a great feature. Great for finishing into the sun with some lens flare! = )

But going from home point to the waypoint, can’t it still hit a branch on it’s way up? Or are you still adjusting the flight as it goes?

Excellent! Before watching this video (I've enjoyed your other tutorials) I thought the "old" method of setting the waypoints in flight was not very useful. Now I not only know better, but can see the potential of the technique. The gimbal action is very smooth with your method, whereas I've noticed using a POI in waypoints, the gimbal seems to jerk a bit as it tries to keep the POI centered. Thanks! I'm looking forward to trying this.

I got the same drone. Loving the waypoint options. I already have a route that I take over a /Ravine/trees. I have spot deer and Coyotes in the past. I want to fly the same usually route but at night - with the lime cube mount and light.

for the way points, how do you get the mavic 2 - to remember the camera/tilt positions? I tried using this on a film shoot last week, I got the drone to fly from point A to point B but the camera remained static (straight ahead) it didn't tilt up/down like I had it set to when I marked the way points..

Jeff I see you are droning in Raleigh NC, Dix Park. Are we still allowed to fly our drones here? I've been out there a few times and I thought I read somewhere no drone flying. Maybe some areas are no fly zone. I was planning to go tomorrow but I know there will be a funeral event going on.

at the 4:10 mark how did you add the 2nd way point? did you hit the c1 button again? Is the c1 button automatically oriented for waypoints? Or did you set it up that way?

Great video. But I'm still trying to find an answer to one question. I set up a multiple point mission running inside the perimeter of a local lake. Now I want to run the mission in reverse. So I told it to start at the last waypoint. But that doesn't seem to do the trick. Any way to reverse it, or, must we re-plan the whole mission?

Hi Jeff. I have been making a winter /summer flights using the waypoints I have to say its mot as good as I hoped. Running the winter shots blending into the same flight done in summer. It doesn't match up as good as I hoped

@jeff in this video you are saying making waypoint 1 as the same as the homepoint then manually fly reverse with the camera facing as waypoint 2 .

Dude, I'm so over this winter! Today where getting snow, then ice, then rain. WTF So I have a few morning hours to grab some practice.. ugh. I try to fly everyday. Jeff, thanks for your videos. I've really learned a lot and have a Mavic 2 Pro as well. On the shot flying through the trees, is the drone following the same path and angle through the trees as you initially flew it? I always wondered that because in your case if it took an average of the two angles (initial and endpoint) it likely would have hit a branch.

A little late but no.... it travels "as the crow flies" so to speak. So if you're flying backwards through the trees and but don't stay on a straight line after passing the trees AND you turn off obstacle avoidance like Jeff did you will crash. If you keep a straight line and set the yaw at the end you can get some cool shots through the tree. These waypoints are great but you need time and space and need to make sure all of your flights from one waypoint to the next are above any obstacles from start to finish.

Great video, and feature! In this example, there are only two waypoints, do you need to select "Arc" in this case?

What is your experience with flying, in various light wind conditions, the exact same path through such a small “hole” through the trees? I seems very scary. Also, I have the current levels of all software/firmware (June 30, 2019) and when I press the START button, the mission fails to start. Is the recent upgrade unusable due to this bug?

Did you say you turned the sensors off? How do you have so much confidence flying through the trees like that without it hitting a branch?

Nice. Do waypoints also record the altitude that you originally flew to or do you have to control altitude with the controller?

Everything about the waypoint is recorded (altitude, drone orientation, camera angle, etc.). One other tip that i did not mention is to make sure you don't yaw/pan more than 180 degrees between waypoints. If you go over 180 degrees, the mavic will interpret this by using the smaller angle and face the wrong direction. Hope that makes sense.

Hi Jeff. If you don't mind me asking.. Every time I shoot video with the gimbal pointing straight down the video has a noticeable choppiness to it, it’s never smooth. I can see this in my screen while I’m recording and, of course, it’s in the video. The drone is flying in a straight line and this happens whether I shoot in a simple 2-point Waypoints mode or if I shoot in manual control (the speed remains exactly the same - and isn’t excessive - and there is no stick movement). I don’t have this issue when shooting with the gimbal in other positions, it only happens when the gimbal is pointed straight down. Can you suggest an explanation why this is happening? Thx.

Hi Joseph, i have not heard that before or noticed on my M2P. I wonder if somehow the gimbal motors disengage when pointing straight down at 90 deg or something. i would be curious to know if the problem goes away if you are slightly less than 90 deg...say 85 degrees. Not sure if that would make a difference.

Hi Steve, the ideas is that the mavic will fly a straight line between the 2 waypoints. I turned the obstacle avoidance off b/c this is a very narrow shot. Otherwise, the obstacle avoidance would kick in and prevent from going further. However, you should always have you hand near the pause button just in case. Happy Flying!

Unless I'm mistaken, when you were flying backwards to set up your 2nd WP it seems that you didn't fly in a straight line when flying through the tree branches. When recording will the drone know to tweak the path a bit to avoid the tree branches?

@@josephl2546 , so even though my backward flying was not perfectly straight, the line of sight between wp1 and wp2 was exactly straight through the canopy in the trees. So if you stand in front of wp1 and have a direct line of sight to daylight to wp2, you should be good. I turned my sensors off so I could get even closer.

Works only for Mavic 2 drones. Litchi works for (almost) all DJI drones, including the Mavic Air.

How do you avoid tree branches when you fly backwards the first time?

Can you set the gimbal to pan as it cruises to the waypoints?

Hi DR, "kind of". You basically frame your shot when you set wp1, then you fly to wp2 and frame how you want your shot to end before setting the wp. Very small pans work better. As long as you don't pan more than 180 degrees it will pan from wp1 to wp2. If you rotate more that 180d, the mavic will rotate in the other direction (b/c the other direction is shorter)

I just got the Mavic 2 enterprise dual...thanks for this tutorial...how do you set up waypoints around an object like a building or a house with the camera continually focused on the object? I keep setting up the waypoints, manually focusing on the object...BUT when it gets to the next way point the camera turns toward the waypoint direction and ruins my video😳. Your input would be greatly appreciated😬

Hey good question. Two things I can think of. 1. Make sure you are framing each shot before you set the waypoint (orientation is saved). 2. After saving the route, go back in to edit the route, and find the setting for "all waypoint direction", and set it to "custom". Let me know if that fixes it.

Great tutorial, Jeff. Question please. At one point in your video the Tips box opened saying “GPS positioning is disabled. Enable GPS location on your mobile device?” You clicked Cancel to exit this Tips box. In one of your replies you say “the GPS coordinates can vary from time to time.” If the GPS is already disabled how do the GPS coordinates affect the flight? Or am I not understanding this…? Thx!

Hi Joseph, great question. I believe the "Enable GPS location on your mobile device" was referring to my mobile phone. I never turn this on when i fly. However the GPS location for each waypoint is totally separate. What i have found is that results may vary with the waypoints. So if i go out and set my waypoints and fly the mission 2-3 times, it will be perfect. If i come back a week or a month later and fly the same mission, there may be some drift in the waypoints, which is problem in the case of flying through the tree canopy. So definitely make sure you have your pause button handy just in case.

You might have to scroll down the page just a bit - "Start" should be at the bottom.

But I don’t know if I have the guts to try this, isn’t it extremely risky to disable the obstacle avoidance...? Can I be 100% certain that it takes EXACTLY the same route everytime...? *nervous*... :)

Hi Michael, welcome to the channel, glad you are here. I would definitely test this out a couple times just to make sure. I would suggest going to a local football field and going through the field goal posts. Stand in the middle of the field so you can see how precise the flight will be. You can always hit the pause button on the controller if it looks like it is drifting to the left or right. Have fun!

@@michaelnilsson596 yep, actually you can. So the right stick is almost like slider in that regard. Push the right stick fwd to go faster from wp1 to wp2, or pull back on the right stick to slow down and reverse from wp2 to wp1, or just go back and forth with the right stick to repeat the movement. Works pretty well in my experience so far.

Jeff, Thanks for this video. THis is exactly what I have been looking for. I had previously been using GS Pro app on my Mavic 2 for waypoints because I could capture waypoints whilst actually flying. Thus allowing me to set accurate and realistic waypoint positions. With the release of Waypoints 2.0 for Mavic 2 pro, everyone else has just talked about setting waypoints using maps. Virtually useless in most situations in my view as Maps can never show real world obstacles and hazards that could be in your flightpath. i.e trees, powerlines, buildings, etc. One thing I did not catch clearly in your video was how to set the waypoint whilst flying. I think you said "push the c1 button" but it was very quick and despite replaying the video several times, I am only 70% sure that it was you said. Am I right? Do you use the C1 button to set waypoints during waypoint mapping setup. Does this record not only position, but speed, height and gimbal position?. I understand that each waypoint can be edited later. I would appreciate a reply as your video is the only one (amazingly) that describes this important, practical and useful feature. DJI's website and forum is also sadly lacking in detail about this as well. I checked out the most up to date user guide (24 Jan 2019) and could find nothing about this feature.

Hi Doug, you are 100% correct. C1 to set waypoint while in flight. Altitude, orientation, and gimbal pitch at waypoint are all recorded. The mavic will interpolate smoothly from on wp to the next wp. Cheers!

@@DougWillisLuckyBastard , you will use the same C1 button every time you want to create a wp. So you'll hit C1 for wp1 and wp2. Then you just save the task in the route settings. You should be good to go after that.

Jeff, I have another question please. I've tried a few Waypoints flights and one thing I notice is that during recording when the drone gets to a Waypoint and has to make a slight adjustment in orientation the drone slows down enough to make the adjustment and in doing so kind of "slides" up to slow down and make the slight rotation in orientation; this is noticeable in the video (I was flying at 13kph). Is it possible to smooth out this transition? (I hope I explained that well enough) As always, thanks for your great vids.

Hi Joseph, 2 things will help. 1. Make sure you are using "Arc" mode instead of "Polyline". Also, when in edit mode, go into each waypoint except wp1. There will be setting on the bottom right where you can change the "curvature" of the arc. This should smooth out curve at each waypoint depending on how you have it set up. Do this on every wp where you are seeing the issue. Let me know how how it turns out.

Jeff, thanks for your reply. I wasn't able to select ARC mode in my WP flight; I tried but a message appeared saying (if I remember correctly) that the camera couldn't perform the ops in ARC mode. I guess it was because my WPs were in a specified path which wasn't a smooth arc(?). There have also been times when I've saved a WP flight, tapped on GO and made all my settings, hit START, and nothing happens, the drone just hovers in place and doesn't move. Not sure what all that is about cuz I'll set up another WP flight in basically the same path and it'll be fine. Thx.

​@@josephl2546 yep that is correct. Basically, when you go into ARC mode, you can't also program the camera to take a photo or start/stop recording. The reason is that when you fly in a "curve" the camera/drone never reaches that exact gps "point" where it knows to take photo or start recording. So for ARC mode, your best bet is to start recording when you start the mission. I hope that makes sense.

I'm going to Plus 1 this request. Please, if you haven't already, yours is the first video of many that describes the manual waypoint. Question, I see you using the C1 button to manually set your waypoint, is this a setting that you had to change or is it set automatically when in waypoint mode? Right now mine is at the factory setting of gimbal to plum and vertical with the C1 button.

I thought you can do the wave points without flying them first or are you using the old way of doing them ?

Jeff Greene ok I’m going to try it out . I’ve been hearing you can setup a project and save it and later go out and fly it. Would you know which one you can do with the Mavic 2 pro or both ?

@@urbankixxfilming3451 you can definitely do both. Try it out first at a local football field or something similar.

DJI 2.0 is nice but I still prefer Litchi. First reason you can move the way point easily in Litchi but not in 2.0. Second reason is that the arc radius is adjustable in Litchi. I think 2.0 had radius adjustment the first time I used it but lost it in an update. Also I don.t need to have the drone powered up to program in Litchi. I fly a MP 2 Zoom with crystal monitors, maybe its different with an ipad.

100% agree Wayne. Dji waypoints is clunky compared to Litchi, and several years behind.

So setting all these way points and adjusting them etc can only be done with the aircraft powered on and on the ground ? Or can it be done offline without powering on the drone ?

Yep pretty much. You can adjust either while in flight or on the ground and connected. Technically you can power off the drone after you have the app connected to save battery. For much better waypoint fine tuning i would recommend Litchi any day of the week.

OK so thats that. Litch i think allows you to do it on their online hub and then load the sequene onto their app ? If i buy litchi how does it hook up with my drone, bec DJI Go 4 asks for user id and password etc and is strict tied in between app and the drone right ?

@@mgr5550 yes correct, litchi's mission hub will sync pretty much instantly. You will basically use the litchi app instead of the dji go4 app. The trick is to go into your phones app settings and turn off the setting that says use dji go 4 by default. So then every time you go to connect to your quad, you will be given the choice...use dji go 4, or use Litchi. Make sure to choose "just once" each time. Good luck!

Hi Joe, the waypoints feature is not available for the Mavic Air from the Go 4 App. However, i have done this exact same shot using the 3rd party "Litchi" app. I would definitely recommend the app for use with the Mavic Air. The app is about $25, but is a nice additional and works with many different DJI drones.

I'm never use this feature yet since I got the mavic 2😂

Hang on... Are you saying that you can save waypoints in 3D space while in the air and even the gimbal tilt and zoom settings will be saved.?? (btw is it a pro or a zoom you used?)

Yep, you got it! It's really an incredible feature when used in this way. So basically you are framing your shot at the beginning and end, so that the mavic 2 pro will interpolate smoothly in between. I have the mavic 2 pro.

@@digiteye So basically the mavic will create the straight line between the 2 waypoints. Personally, i am incapable of flying backwards in straight line with out adjusting (this ruins the shot). As long as you have a clear straight shot, this can definitely be done. Do keep you finger near the pause butt as always, just in case :)

So far for me repeatability on tight framing is terrible. For large sweeping vistas it is okay but have not had good results when the framing needs to be tight on closer subjects.

Greg that is interesting, i have not noticed any issues so far (knock on wood). Could it be a calibration issue perhaps, just a thought.

Hi Joe, that was so i could still fly real close to the trees. Otherwise the sensors would prevent me from passing through.

you not gonna show us how to set the way point ?

I tried the same method you are showing us in this video (by the way, you forgot to mention that you have to press "C1" button to set a waypoint), but It didn't tur out well. I was so scared because my drone was about to crash, that I haven't used it anymore. This is what happened: I flew my drone to a point, and pressed C1, then I took my drone to the next point, turning the heading about 90 degrees right, and I completed the route with 3 more points. When I took my drone back to the home point and hit "Go" to execute the route I had just set, my drone flew to the second waypoint, and did not turn 90 degrees to the right. instead, it moved SIDEWAYS to the right, keeping the camera forward. Don't understand why, but I just cancelled and have not tried anymore to use this waypoint feature.

Hi Carlos that is interesting. Were you using polyline or arc? Also wondering if the mavic was calculating the final 3 wp's as it was approaching the second wp, skewing the route a bit. Keep that hand near the pause button for sure.

So... why do you fly out through the trees? Why not fly out over them, like you do on the return? You're not relying on your micro-adjustments to get through the trees, just the dead straight line between you, WP1 and the Mavic, WP2 with no obstacles in between. I just got my M2P and tried Waypoints once. I need to read up and watch more of your tutorials as I completely failed to plan camera angles (that's a lotta grass going by really boringly!). It seems to me the "Arc" mode is a bit of a misnomer - it just pretends to Arc by gradually pointing to the WP after next...? It actually follows straight lines.

I own a CrystalSky monitor. I'll let you know 2 yrs from now how this works when DJI finally pushes out an update for it. That's about how long it'll take DJI to remember that they once sold the CrystalSky system as "professional" equipment. The irony is that CS monitors run on the Android OS!

GPS can vary between 1 to 10 meters so it’s not a good idea! Good luck not crashing your drone on future attempts. eg going back to the same spot in summer and doing the same waypoint mission.

Hi Neo, this is correct. When you set to arc the mavic basically gets close to the waypoint but doesn't reach it. So the camera won't perform the action like take a photo. Best to either turn off arc, or do camera function manually.

@@JeffGreeneChannel Thanks! All I did was set up some waypoints by flying, I didn't even give it direction to start taking media but it wont even let me fly the mission without that warning. I'll try it again though.

Hi there Jeff, and thanks for a really nice tutorial. However, I want to add some comments. To start with, I am a professional pilot, and my "office" is on the flight deck on the Boeing 737, in the left seat. So HOPEFULLY I know what I am talking about :) To start with I want to ask all the readers a question, it is a quit basic question, but, as we will see later on, it is actually a bit more complicated than you first would think off. The question is: what is altitude ? (yeah, I know, most of you are now thinking, what the fu.. this guy claims to be a pilot on a modern airliner, and asking this kind of stupid questions. In a follow up I might ask you: what is speed ?, but that is another, complicated, more or less, question). Well, about the question: what is altitude ? I might follow up and ask: do you talk about altitude above sea level. Altitude above ground. Density altitude (which is important to know when we do the calculations about weight and performance, are we able to depart from this airport on a hot day with full load ?). And some other altitudes which is used in aviation. To make use of your scenario Jeff. What would happen if you takeoff from a location A (just to name them), regarding altitude, on the flight when you saved the waypoints. And you switch off the drone, change the battery, and takeoff from location B when you do the "film flight". Lets say location A was from the top of your van, and location B was on the ground, 50 meters from your van, and 5 meters lower (we are talking about altitude again) ? What the DJI is recording when you save the waypoints is the altitude in reference to the takeoff altitude. So if you depart from another location, and is flying a route which is narrow, like this one, you might actually crash. Not because the drone is navigating wrong, but because the system is designed in a way that will allow this. The drone will be PERFECTLY on spot regarding position x and y (or lat / lon if you want), but it will be off in altitude (even if the system is flying "spot on"). On flat land it will not matter so much, but in a country like Norway, with a lot of mountains, valleys, trees etc, it will for sure matter. Just as a side step: many years ago, there was an ambulance flight flying the approach into Bardufoss. Which is located in the northern part of Norway, surrounded by mountains up to about 6000 feet. During the final approach the aircraft crashed into a mountain because it was flying too low. Do you know the reason ? The pilots was flying at the correct altitude SPOT ON. BUT, that was with regards to their altimeters. They had forgot that it was about -40C on the ground, and then your altimeters will show the wrong altitude. You have to correct the altitudes for low temperatures. A small mistake, but with a catastrophic result. Also: when you make the waypoints, you will probably not fly in a perfect straight line, so the drone might actually hit a tree when flying automatic, because it is then flying in a perfect straight line. So with the sensors off, it might end in disaster. I would probably not be doing this flight. But you got a really nice shot there :)

Hi Tarjei, thanks for your comment and insight. For this feature on the mavic 2 drone, the application records a very accurate gps coordinate, along with the altitude and, and even the camera angle. Powering off, replacing battery, and changing flight takeoff location has no bearing on the waypoints that were previously saved. Once you hit "Go", the mavic2pro will attempt to fly to the starting location. So if i hit "go" from 100 ft above my waypoint, the mavic2pro will descend to my first waypoint(about 8 ft off the ground), then proceed with the planned shot(straight line between to waypoints). You could easily launch from several blocks away, and the mavic will fly autonomously towards the first waypoint to start the mission. In this case, you would use extreme caution(keep sensors turned on) due to all the points you mention, change in altitude, etc. In the end, i use this feature for very specific shots where i am close by with my hand near to pause button(b/c technology is never perfect).

@@JeffGreeneChannel Nope, but its because you don't understand the "altitude" thing (or more correct actually, HEIGHT). I will try to make a video about it in the upcoming days and show you what I mean. I ask again: what is altitude ? What is the reference ? How come you always take off from 0 meters / feet ? Even if I takeoff from 1000 meters above sea level (like today), I still had 0 meters on take off. (I am sorry, I have used the wrong term, in mean: What is HEIGHT ? Altitude is a different thing, and DJI has it correct, I was wrong). So my question is: what is HEIGHT ? And how will it affect waypoints when you takeoff from a different ALTITUDE ? I will make a video about it, and show you. Maybe you will be up for a surprise ? :)
