These trees are looking lush. In my experiences, and what I’ve seen from other videos, the Mavic 3 does best when the trees look like this. The thin sticks and branches with sparse leaves gave it the most trouble.

Hey Dustin. In tighter environments like the road out from your place, it might have have been ideal to track in parallel mode. Still available if you slide left from center of direction compass. Thanks for the test. I am also finding Air 3 sensors are sensitive to bright sun. 1pm in the Soutwest is damn bright - try it after 5 pm i guarantee you will get a better result. From Air 3 and Mavic 3 documentation: Do not use Focus Track when: The lighting is extremely dark (10,000 lux)

Yep, we can talk about ideal environments and situations catering to DJI's capabilities all day but everyone just wants a drone that you can put up in the air and not have to worry about all the shortcomings. I think this is a reasonable country road test environment that many will want to track in. I'm just surprised certain tech like OA & tracking aren't working much better by now. I'll try and do another tracking test on a different vehicle using the other lens etc. I'm just honestly worried it won't survive 🍻

Thanks Dustin for the real-time review. Man, two crashes on the same day and the same tree! Not too good! I'm sure DJI will probably get complaints about the trustworthiness of the obstacle avoidance. Still, this is my preferred drone to get over the Mini 4 Pro. They did not do enough with it to merit dumping my Mini 3 Pro. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Dustin. I've watched this video a few times and started watching it again tonight. I just got this drone as my first DJI Drone on Tuesday. What an amazing drone it is compared to the Autel Evo Lite Plus. Anyways, in the beginning of your video you said you were recording in 4k 60fps. I'm wondering if that had any affect on the tracking capabilities at all? Maybe in a lower resolution it would track better. Dunno. Just a thought. 🤔

How does it know where is the front? If you tell it to track from the front when it is started behind you, why would it move to the front of you? Maybe it assumes it’s already in front of you? So, from its perspective, when you move forward, it thinks you’re backing away. Maybe you have to manually put it in front of you before.

  • @DustinDunnill

    @DustinDunnill

Because programming algorithms account only for direction of movement. Ie: once it detects you are moving in a direction it will always try to use that direction as "front" in all tracking options. 🍻

I think that tracking from the front was the problem for the drone. It goes passed the corner you turned at, (not knowing you were going to turn) then having to speed up to get around to back in front of you and with the sudden speed up could no avoid the crash in time. So I would think following would be best option. Also when you changed from rear to front there wasn't enough space for the drone to get past you and it was doing best at avoiding the trees at that point. None the less, very interesting.

  • @gregausit

I think you’ll see different tracking behaviors at different altitudes. My Mini 3 will reduce speed automatically at lower altitudes when obstacle detection is on and then increase speed automatically when flying over 20-30 feet. It’s like the drone is programmed to go slower at lower altitudes to allow its processor time to analyze its environment. I’ve seen the obstacle detection work, but I don’t trust it nears trees and power lines.

I think tracking may need to be done in open spaces, I tried mini 4 doing similar to this and from the front is very dicey if trees are around.. I would bet that the speed and side sensing just cannot keep up properly, I brought it down and will only be using in wide open space.......also, it is human tracking, no e bike or e skateboard which is making it fly way to fast compared to walking or jogging. If doing a specific scene, may be better to pre set with waypoints.

No doubt this is a disappointment in terms of tracking, but also, if you actually got your drone license to fly above 249g drones, you should know that you're the one responsible for the drone and how it flies, not to rely on automated systems, and to work on your own manual flying skills.. Absolutely good video and test that needs to be tested. But you get my point. Given how excellent the drone is in every other respect, this failure in tracking really doesnt mean anything to me. I dont buy a drone to expect it to be 100% automated and hands-off. I buy it to fly it, to feel it, to become a good pilot with it. Not to put it in auto mode and forget about it. But that said, some people DO buy drones for that, and yep, they will have a bad surprise once it crashes. Obstacle avoidance as it is now, is mostly for really obvious surfaces like buildings or hills. At that, it's very good. It's mostly for when its returning to home after having lost signal, so it at least has a CHANCE to try to avoid stuff on the way home by itself. It's not for automatic flying. And your drone licence education taught you that as well.. Fly your drones manually folks, that's what they're made for. Thats what you pay for. And for gods sakes folks, put prop guards on it if you really want to have it be automated. You wont notice the 100 grams extra, nor the -0.5m/s speed you lose due to the aerodynamics.

One other feature that seems obvious to me but i cant seem to find, which is Stationery Tracking... As in, i fly my drone up to say 60ft, aim the camera down to the ground and say highlight my friend walking or biking around in a big circle in the area. Why cant i draw a box over the person and have the drone without moving forward, back, up, or down. Follow and Record the person by Yawing the drone left and right as necessary within limits, and have the gimbal follow up or down as the person moves from the bottom of the videos frame out of view to the top, and the camera tilts up smoothly to follow them as you were doing that. Like following a dog thats running around from up above, it doesnt need to move forward, if it can zoom maybe that could be a settings option, but just keep the Subject in the camera frame by only moving the drone and gimbal, but not actually having the drone move from its spot. That way you can kind of capture the same thing but from various viewpoints, various distance, and various heights where the subject moves and the Drone doesnt... Unless this is actually already a feature then maybe someone can let me know how to activate it, but i dont see it anywhere it the Menus, on my newer DJI drones like the Air2s and Mini 3 Pro..

With a drone that doesn't have to stay below 250 grams I don't understand why DJI doesn't just have sensors that are dedicated to sideways obstructions like with the Autel EVO 2 or the likes. With a drone of this size or the size of the Mavic series, adding two more sensors (one on each side) wouldn't add enough weight to noticeably reduce flight time and should eliminate sideways blind spots. That's the direction Autel went with their larger camera drones and it makes sense to me. If you're a crash test dummy this is the drone for you. 😁

@@DustinDunnill Sure... I understand that. But it is unrealistic to expect the drone to avoid obstacles in quick succession. A few years ago we were happy if it just stopped in front of a solid wall. In my opinion, obstacle avoidance is an evening defence in case something escapes the operator's attention. None of these are suitable for operational use. That's why I said that there are fewer obstacles above the trees, but if there is a taller one, it's easier to avoid. The technology is not yet there to safely avoid bare tree branches, electrical wires, or complicated obstacles that come in quick succession. You can see it in the video here. That's why I don't understand why we want to be followed from 2-3 m (not aerial) by a device designed for aerial photography. A 360 degree camera mounted on a pole will do it and is even cheaper (safer). No drone needed. So I don't understand why a drone should be able to fly low in densely overgrown forest.... Even if they did, we couldn't afford it. Skydio was very advanced in obstacle avoidance, but they were also crashing. I saw a lot of videos like that. They advertise that they can see 360 degrees and avoid obstacles, but what they don't tell you is that it doesn't mean it can operate with lots and lots of obstacle avoidance, but that it can come in handy in the occasional, emergency situation. I put it above the trees and it worked great. lost me once for going too fast, but Once I got the speed right it kept up. I had it in sport mode, but it wont track as fast as it can fly. But it was tracking faster than what you were going. Not great. But am sure for getting my kids at the beach it will be great. I also used it to track me on an open rice field. Why couldn't DJI have active tracking like the Skydio? The DJI RC & RC O4 controller have an android tablet built in there. With the ability to use its internal GPS and other sensors for location, even without internet. Then you could use offline maps for the drone, etc.. But the positioning is even better when you have that plus an internet connection as well. They have both wifi and bluetooth, so you could use your phone to create an internet "hotspot" over wifi to get Online. Then you have some pretty accurate GPS Info for the Drone, to be able to track and follow you/the controller better. Plus the newer drones have wifi-direct and would be able to use that type of connection to share data for the Active Tracking of a moving Subject. If that is how Skydio did it, then DJI could add this pretty easily purely with software. Every DJI controller could technically do the same if not more really. They all have internal GPS or for the N1 external controllers, you'll most likely have a phone connected to it that would have an internal GPS, most wifi tablets dont have a gps chip, but thats besides the point. I heard Skydio recently shut down, which is a shame because they were about the second best drone besides dji for this kind of stuff and was the best for following a moving target, even a fast one.. I remember seeing the skydio footage for the first time and how it worked as well and it was truly amazing. It was like you couldn't lose that thing if you tried as far as a lock, and it seemed to be very good at getting good camera angles while still avoiding things. Idk if you just needed to be in an open area, or if it actually did have obstacle sensors built into it..? The drone or controller can even tell the angle your at when facing the drone, so if you see the arrow pointing away from the drone, you could turn around, and using that arrow line up to be directly pointing the controller at the drone. So therefore you can do the same with drone to the controller or person. If they made a active track mode that just followed the DJI controller and its current location, assuming that would be needed for this level of tracking to work, it could use the current camera data, plus the controller's location data incase it loses the subject for a second or two because of a tree coming in-between the camera shot, and it would make the tracking way more accurate, and allow the drone to focus more on flying around obstacles, instead of constantly trying to use only the camera to follow a moving subject that is changing every second..

@@DustinDunnill Yea it really does unfortunately.. Almost like how Apple would wait to come out with an Air 3S that had Mavic 3 level of sensors first, instead of actually making the Air3 significantly better.. idk. They will definitely improve it and they are known to come out with new updates even a year later so maybe they just wanted to release it and get it out there and hopefully theyre working to iron out these bugs… Because like you said that’s pretty bad and it’s disappointing really because I thought the Air3 with all the new sensors was the solution for this issue with still a medium and manageable sized drone. Plus smaller and cheaper batteries because of that. Can the Mavic 3 Pro do this kind of tracking or you haven’t tried it? I dont have a Mavic 3.. Ill have to tripod mode yeah I usually go up actually more like 25/30ft and i have the subject scanning option on so i can just draw the green box over someone or something and it locks on but it doesn’t actually follow it if it goes out of frame, it doesn’t try to move the camera gimbal or anything. It works if i put it Active Track on say my Mini 3 Pro which is what id like to use for this because of portability but it only works while using Active Track, same as my Air2s but then it tries to actually move forward and back with it and i cant focus on the controller the whole time to get the good shots at least lol. Yeah, gps tracking is probably the only way to solve most the tracking of objects moving faster than 10mph. I also think there is a lot of room for improvement in object detection which is critical for tracking moving objects. Avoiding tree branches is probably difficult for the onboard computer to map the best possible path to keep the up with objects that are moving faster than walking speeds... As far as other YT reviews being able to do better at tracking, I doubt they do any better, they likely record tracking stunts many times, and only include the footage that looks impressive. I bet all the failed attempts in this video could have been done if recorded several times and tweaked to avoid previous mistakes, but that would not have as realistic in terms of performance tracking. Besides, DJI marketing aside, these drones are never going to have Skydio level tracking/ obstacle avoidance just like Skydio will never have DJI level cameras, transmission, flight modes, features, etc. Active Track was originally designed to be an aid to help you keep a subject in frame while flying. Now people expect drones to follow them and get cinematic shots. In my opinion, owning both Skydio and DJI, neither company really accomplish this. Skydio crashes less but the shots are often herkie jerky garbage. DJI gets better, smoother shots but they are way more prone to crashes. I think we all need to just make some friends... Hahaha!

@@mxracingunlimitedltd7784 I hear you but the reason Skydio is done in the consumer space is because, as it turns out, most people don't care about Active Track. Trust me, companies don't walk away from profits. If they were cleaning up selling the Skydio 2, there would be a Skydio 3. I've been flying drones since you had to build them from kits. I now use the Mavic 3 primarily but I also have a Skydio 2 collecting dust. The thing that a lot of people miss is that the Skydio 2 has a very expensive processor that allows it to do what it does. DJI could do it BUT then the Air 3, for example would cost another $300-500. The average drone consumer, DJI's bread and butter, won't pay more for a feature most of us don't use regularly, if at all. I can count on one hand the number of times I've used Dynamic Track or Active Track. The fun of drones is flying them. Having the drone do all the work is REALLY boring in my opinion and not really rewarding since you could hardly say that YOU actually did anything. It would be like purchasing a vibrator for your wife and then bragging to all your friends how sexually satisfied she is.

@DustinDunnill Maybe but will it cover all the bases? Will it get cinematic, autonomous, high-end tracking shots AND be able to fly 5 miles away, when you want to fly the drone yourself? That's the real question. Skydio fails miserably as a "pilot's drone". You don't fly a Skydio 2, you make suggestions. If you fly a Skydio down the same path 10x, you may get 10 different results. DJI fails at autonomous tracking but is awesome to fly. You can fly a DJI with confidence and precision knowing it'll go exactly where you tell it to. It's not as if Skydio can't make a more "DJI like" drone, with better range, flight time, better camera, etc. It's also not like DJI couldn't make a drone that tracks better and has even better Obstacle Avoidance. It's all about the market and customer base in my opinion.

It just can’t get around to transition from the back to front in tight spaces. Higher altitudes above the trees was a bit better but like you said more prone to loosing you. I see improvement over previous dji drones but it is no skydio. Also the skydio is no air 3. It’s sad that skydio has decided to drop consumer drones all together. Thanks for the review it was an excellent series as always. If you have family or friends in Maui still I hope they are ok. 🤙

Dustin you are on DJI's good guy list now. You are NOT allowed to show it failing like this.

"not allowed to show it failing" was no where in the contract. They contacted me so I'm assuming they are aware of my honesty 🍻
