    Hey, just wanted to say a massive thanks for your awesome videos! I am learning Dizi as a complete beginner to Chinese instruments (I'm an english classical oboist) and your videos have helped me to understand more of the ethos and thinking in playing. For the first time I've not even though about sheet music and analysis and let the music itself lead me.

    I got my Dizi on Wednesday and love your videos. Though I feel it’s easier to play with the eyes closed to feel the sound and where I‘m blowing wrong. I had years of recorder experience, but never thought it would be this hard, especially with the Chinese notation system. Got a C key flute and love the deep sound in the lower notes. None of my neighbors tried to kill me yet, so I think the lessons help. :D Funnily you can get a very Irish sound out of those Dizis, since I still know some reels from my recorder and whistle days (an it’s hard to find simple Chinese music for Dizi that has no bass clef included).

    4 жыл бұрын

    I know your comment was from a year ago-I’m not sure if you figured it out yet or if you still even play the dizi-but you have to blow softer, I find, to get the lower notes. Find the “sweet spot” in/on the blow hole and blow softer. The harder you blow, the higher the sound you’ll get. What I would do is make a sound from the blow hole, no fingers, hold the position, then cover each hole one by one, to see if I can get a sound out of each of them. Remember to blow softer for the bottom three holes.

  • @Chiinnature

    @Chiinnature

    smoking should not stop you from playing dizi, its mostly the method not right. Did you tape the membrane hole up before blowing? Use some clear tape on it and cover that membrane whole or else it won't make a sound.

  • @Chiinnature

    @Chiinnature

    8 жыл бұрын

    are you using tape or membrane? for the low note, you try to think about your belly lowest point and "flatten" out your air stream more, make it not "blowng" but more like just releasing air, slow and "weaker" stream of air will do the job. If you are using tape, it can be because the tape is too thick too.

    Ok basically, you don’t exactly hear the notes. If you don’t know the ABCD notes then you have no chance of learning anything. You need to know your scales and then you can use jinpu and use numbers. Speaking of listening, learn to get the perfect pitch. It’s really important to.

    duongooo There are a few reasons. 1. You don't know how to blow into the hole properly yet. 2. You didn't close the holes properly with your fingers. The pressure should be balanced with other fingers in unison. Neither too hard or too soft. Also, your don't have to use your fingertips to close the holes. Use any part of your fingers however you like and as long it does give you comfort.

    If you are able to produce clear sound for the first 3 and not the rest, the reason is not holding the flute straight and in the proper position. It happened with me too , I was casually holding it while relaxing on bed. Stupid me. I received my Dizi yesterday. Pretty excited to learn it. I wish if i could find some online classes.

    When playing the lower notes, are there limitations with regards to playing notes out of key? When I play in the register higher than the lowest register there doesn't seem to be much of a problem, but when I get to the very low notes, it seems like if I do manage to play the note by partially covering the hole, it doesn't sound out very well. Is it just that there is a certain technique to partially covering the holes that I am not realizing, maybe also where I need to focus on my breathing and/or other aspects of technique, is this an inherent limitation of the dizi itself, or is it simply that I have a cheap dizi and I should not expect much from it? Thank you.

  • @Chiinnature

    @Chiinnature

    8 жыл бұрын

    +1337M37ALH3AD you should be able to play it, and covering the holes is always fully covered, not partially covered. Cheap dizi? I have a 5 dollar dizi and it plays fine too. It could be the techniques of blowing because when you play the higher notes you will blow hard and when you play the lower notes, you might be blowing too hard or the airflow is too "narrow" and cause the trouble in making that sound. Try to make the airflow more spread out or wider and don't blow so hard, see if you can get it

    K Selim Anxiety can be happening because of a lot of reasons. From your description, seems like you have soul fragments damaged in the past and not healed up yet, so the scary feeling comes very easily, and you are kinda "fragile" in that perspective. Best way to do is have us do soul-retrieve magic for you to fix the problem up. You can email me and we can talk about that if you like. (makjosi@chiinnature.com)

    I bought a dizi recently and used tape as a substitute for the dimo. However, when I try playing, all the notes sound the same, no matter which holes are open or closed! Do you think it's because something is wrong with my technique?

    chopstick thrower Well your flute is busted, LOL! It's supposed to be there so your dizi can have the right tune. Without the proper hands, you can't fix it back the right place because it is supposed to be fixed FIRST, then drill the holes and tune the holes for the correct sound. Now you have the plug out, then it means the plug is bad, you can't use that anymore. Best bet is get a wine cork plug and resize it to fit and plug it back in, hot glue or something it down, and then see if the pitch is right. Test one note (with 3 fingers down) and see if you get the note, then let the glue set and it should work.

    SpongeX129 there is a huge difference. Western flutes aren't made of bamboo and they have a lot more holes and things. Dizis have a much simpler structure.

I don't know if its correct, I started playing dizi four days ago and I'm practicing. |5-- . 3 . 2 . 1 . 5 . 3- . 2 . 1 . 2-| |2 . 1 . 5- . 3-3 . 2 . 1 . 3 . 5--6| |6 . 5-- . 2-2 . 1 . 3 . 2 . 1 . 2 . 5 5 . 4 . 3-3 . 4-4-4 . 5 . 6 . 5--| | = breathe - or -- = continuous blow I hope this helps ;)

    Maybe it's because I have no idea about air speed or anything like that, but for whatever reason, I can only seem to get the notes that are in the key of whatever dizi I'm playing (I have a C key and a G key). No high notes or low notes, just whatever key the dizi is in. I'm mainly focusing on stuff from soundtracks (and whatever I feel like making up at the time, but that doesn't happen much). I've been trying to play by ear (more or less), and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong if I'm unable to get the lower or higher notes. I'd really appreciate some help. Thanks!

    I am confused...is there a variation of number notation and fingering of dizi? The one I came across in fingering chart for D key All holes covered 5 then 6,7,1,2,3,4 . For 4 is last 2 holes of the first 3holes covered. I see different key dizi has slightly different fingering chart. Any one can sort out my confusion?

    the hole's purpose is to vibrate something and create the sound. without covering it up with "something", nothing is there for the air to vibrate on and the sound will not come out. You can have that hole taped with normal tape or use the membrane with the herb-glue. You can reach me by makjosi@chiinnature.com

    Yare Yare try one of the first videos of this series to see how to blow correctly. And remember the hole after the blowing hole has to be either taped (normal office tape) or covered with the membrane (as a beginner myself I find the tape way easier). Everything else is just practice and you will have better or worse days. Love your avatar btw. :D you can also check flautist training because the basic blowing technique is nearly the same. I find it easier to start with short notes along the whole 7 note scale and get to the longer ones after I got the feel for each note, but that is a personal thing of mine, probably because I have recorder knowledge and that is how I started recorder practice.
