Great video! My husband and I just cut/sanded about 100 blocks for our little boy, and this video is right on track with our process. Sanding is a pain... it takes so long but it satisfying at the same time ;) We did happen to have access to a belt sander and like you have said in your comments, it it much easier!

Thanks for the video. It's helpful. I saw that you commented that you got a new sander. I was thinking that the mouse sander may be safer to use in a vice clamp rather than on your saw.

You are right it would be if I had one. My new sander is a free standing belt saw which is far easier and safer to use. It also has a disc sander on the side. When you don't have the best tools you use whatever you have.

LOL I use to play with these when I was in kindergarten. But they used to be bigger or maybe I was just smaller.

I enjoyed the video, and all the benefit of the blocks. However this is a little short on the "how to's" for example some of the sizes and angles used. I agree that a miter saw is a great saw, however I think for this project I'll be using my table saw.

Have fun. I will be making different shapes to add to my grandchildren's collection of blocks now that I have a band saw plus I have a much better free standing belt/disk sander that is so much easier to use.

Yeah, and don't turn on the table saw! Accidentally, of course!

Of course not. Since this video I have got a much better free standing sander. When you don't have the best tools you have to work with what you got.

Why dont you make a stand where you put that machine using for sanding upside..that is comfortable with you...

Beautiful blocks, what paint do you use for the wood?

+Rinabobina12345 Thank you. I used acrylic paint and then for a non-toxic finish I sealed them with linseed oil.

Can you tell me which board you started with for two of the blocks? I'm looking to make blocks like the ones that you have in the right front of your main photo of the group of blocks at the start of your video, the thin, flat rectangles. There might be two different sizes there, the width at the very front on the right and the slightly wider ones right behind those. I can't decide which board to start with so if you can tell me the boards that you used, it would help a lot. Thank you.

I started with 1 1/2" width x 1/2" thick x 6' or 8' length but cut it into 8" lengths, the other behind is 2" wide which is also 1/2" width

what kind of wood do you use and how much does it cost?

You may choose any type of wood. Pine is softer and cheaper, easier to cut. Oak is a harder wood and more expensive but more durable for the long haul. You can also find medium hardness woods. You can pretty much tell the harness factor by the price. You get what you pay for.

That is fine. I happen to love working with wood and wanted the pleasure of making something with my own hands for my grandchildren. Since this video was made I have acquired some better tools that make the work so much faster and easier.

I'm not knocking it. I, personally don't want to spend that much time making them. On another note, have you seen the Tegu blocks? They put magnets inside of them. If you can find a safe DIY way of adding magnets inside of your blocks it would really impress the kids!!

The sad thing is too many people would rather sit behind a desk then do something that requires actual physical labor. A new society of drones who can't do anything for themselves.

Considering wooden blocks range from 30 to 70 dollars it certainly is worth it. Not to mention you can have your children customize the blocks with paints. Cutting wood with a miter saw isn't rocket science, you know?
