Thanks so much for this video! I just managed to fix mine. i find soldering really difficult, and did a pretty ugly job inside, but the westones are working again and thats the important thing! By the way, I also managed to slide and the strain relief sleeve, with a bit of twist and force, so its still useable

Joe Taylor that’s awesome! Glad to hear it and great tip about the strain relief. Enjoy!

Rather than add more solder to the driver and risk a puddle, use flux and add solder to the exposed copper of the wire. This is called tinning the wire. You can then just heat the wire up as you touch it to the driver and you should have no issues.

Havack1 thanks so much for pointing that out. Soldering is definitely not my strong suit, so I’m glad you mentioned it. I’ll favorite your post so others will see it more readily.

Hi, Kev - the housing does look similar (from pictures I see on Google Images), however I've never tried this approach on that particular model. When I did mine for the first time I tried to really take my time so I didn't apply too much force and break through the housing into the electronics inside. So while I can't advise you one way or the other, if you do try it, I'd suggest to just take your time. Since posting this video I've repaired 3 Westone UM2 sets with success. Best to you!

Good job! Have you noticed a difference in sound after the repair?

I will say in my brief listen after repair, the repaired ear may have sounded *slightly* lower in volume- but I was on the fence about it. Both repairs I did were for IEMs used by other members of our worship team - I haven't heard any complaints from them using either pair, so I'm taking that as a good sign. :)

In this case you could on a new plug like this one: SiYear 3-Pole 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Jack Male Plug Repair Replacement Solder Adapter, 3.5mm (1/8inch ) Solder Type DIY Audio Cable Connector(2PACK) www.amazon.com/dp/B07WZT7QGL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_JXK5NQZVNXJ7VVE8MNW4 When soldering though, note that the internal of some headphone wires are coated and the coating may stay on while soldering so it still won’t work after you think you’ve done a good solder job. If you experience that, you can heat some solder on a metal surface to 300 Celsius and while passing the write tip through it slowly it will have time to melt the coating. Other approaches I’ve seen are to use the hottest part of a match flame to try to melt the coating and/or use sandpaper to scrape the wire a bit. These approaches produce more varied results, but the idea is to get the coating off there so the metal can connect to the new plug your putting on. All of this about stripping the coating only applies if you find that your particular cable has coating on it after initially stripping it. Hope this helps!

can or have you worked on Westone UM3X Headphones?

  • @eaglesongs

Hi, Gus. We do now use several UM3X’s, with removable cables, so we haven’t had the need to cut them to replace the cables - we’ve just ordered new cables and snapped them in. If yours have hard wired cables I suppose the same repair process may work, but haven’t tried it on those specifically. Best to you!

Does matter what wire goes to the drives?

  • @eaglesongs

Joshue Gomes I would just reconnect them the way they were initially, or if you’ve already disconnected both then temporarily connect them and test to see if there’s a difference. In my case I just reconnected to the same places. If memory serves there may have been a different marking on one wire to distinguish it from the other. Best wishes!

Hey... you didn`t rescue the plastic spring that makes more resistant the cable exiting the earphone capsule... it's hard to take off the broken cable inside it, but you didn't attempt anyway... lazy.

Sergio Mastríaco the strain relief is so bonded to the cable that preserving it was not possible. That’s why the extra hot glue was used in its place to provide strain relief. If you can however remove it without it breaking up, then that’s great.

@@eaglesongs Several times, I used a drill bit in order to scratch the cord from its inside... it works. Really. But take care with your fingers, hohohoho...
