DIY Weatherproof Boxes: Plano storage trunk

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I am adding some some window seal foam to my Plano 68qt storage boxes to make them weatherproof. I first saw this done on overland bound (link below) and people there have had pretty good luck so I decide to give it a shot and put it to the test... well 2 tests actually.

There's something very satisfying about snapping the lid of a weatherproof box shut and keeping minor valuables safe from rain.

Great video! I picked up one of these bins at Academy for $30, and I'm adding waterproofing today just like you did~

I just bought 4 of these bins and plan to do this as soon as possible! As you are keenly aware (!!) they only leaked when put upside down because of the flex in the lid. I think with the body of the bin supporting the lid, any pressure on the top will only make it a tighter seal.

I think that for normal purposes of just leaving the upright, in the rain, the stripping like this will work totally fine, as your first test demonstrated :)

Thanks for making this video. It’s the only one I could find about DIY weatherproofing storage bins. I know it’s a reach to expect a lot out of them, but I was thinking of a way to “prevent” or “abate” water from entering the “27 Gallon Commander Storage Tote” from Lowes. The yellow lid with the black bin. There is no recesses lip or a tract to place stripping. And the way that they are moulded, now that I analyze it, is thoughtfully thoughtless. I just made that up. What I mean is the length m/walls have 2 “W” channels which when you stack the black bins when empty they line up and nestle in there nice and snug it actually is well designed, but in between the “W W” there is an indenting lip causing the perimeter to have angles now instead of being straight walled. And the handles are hollow as well preventing a straight strip to be nice and simple. Storage space is $$& as well as freighting them from orgin of manufacturing, probably China. Last thought is this. There are 6 oval cutouts designed to tie down, lock, zip tie, or tether these totes. These are the most likely areas where water has the greatest chance of entering the interior of the tote from a moderate volume of water. I might try that out. I hope y’all can envision what I’m describing. My whole OBJECTIVE is to try to protect collectibles and other valuable items while in storage, as well as keep those damn moths out and other bugs and dust. I think Cardboard Boxes for moving is the greatest waste of money and paper. They always rip, and do nothing to keep items preserved. And a waste of tape too. A solid Storage Tote will effectively last a lifetime when used within is designed purpose and tolerances. Global Warning is FAKE, but I still believe in not wasting this Flat Earths Resources carelessly. Waste not, Want not. Thanks again. Next time, fill up the tote with water to the top haha.

These Plano storage trunks all used to have big o-rings installed on them(that's why they have the groove is there). The first two trunks i bought a few years ago had the o-rings but the third i bought a little later didn't. When i called Plano about the missing o-ring they said they are not including the o-rings any more. They told me that they would sell me one as an accessory. Good trunks but unfortunately they decided to quietly downgrade the sealing aspect of them. I suppose they still sell the o-rings separately, but itcwas nice when they all had they included. I hate it when companies introduce a product and then late cheapen it by doing this, but at least it can be upgraded.
