DIY Water Trough

Ойын-сауық

#homestead #diy
In this video we show how we used an old cistern to ensure that our cows always have clean fresh water. Using an old bath and an old toilet the cows are ready for summer.
This is only a temporary solution until we have our rotational system set up.

Great stuff JA and Steve. About 20yrs ago, a bloke I knew had the exact same setup for his vegetable hydroponic system. I now know it as deep water culture. We run the same system in our cattle trough (bathtub) only it’s just the float ball valve. Just remember to protect it with something so the cattle don’t break it. We all know to well how cattle like to nose and rub stuff. Because we had old solid fence mesh (2.5x1.5) on hand, we bent that to go over and protect the valve🍺🍺

Yeah it's not quite finished yet. We kept the surround around the cistern to protect the ball float and valve. Just need to protect the pipe going into it. Only saving grace is that it is against our electric fence and they don't go near the pipe at the back or WHACK!

The good old bath tub watering trough , these would also have to be another Australian icon right up next to the good old hills hoist clothes line . Great work guys . Loved it 🥰 Hello and good morning from The Whitsundays, Queensland

New here, that's a great way to install an automatic waterer while saving money. Use what you have on hand. I hope you have a great day, and hope to see you around.

🤣🤣🤣 From the title alone. Super clever! I'm not 100% certain it will stand the test of time with cattle, but I have my fingers crossed.

So far so good. It's been in there for months now just floating around. We just decided to secure it when mister bull flicked it out!! The float is protected from mischief from the surround 🙂

Can I ask about the plug. We couldn’t get a good enough seal on ours and it kept leaking and we tried lots. Ended up using silicone to secure it. Now cleaning the bath trough is a little more labour intensive than I’d like.

We actually got a screw on cap to attach to the bottom of the pipe coming out the bottom. It made emptying and cleaning easier. We didn't use the plug. Hope that helps?

What a great idea! I kept my old cast iron bathtub when I had my shower/tub combo turned into a walk in shower, old age and bad knees made it very hard to get in and out of the tub the shower was much easier and safer for me. And I planned to use the bathtub exactly as your using yours, outside in the yard for the critters. I had planned to just fill it every few days with fresh water from the hose, the sicko is only about 5 ft. From where I plan to put the bathtub. I notice your using a brick at the drain end, does it keep the water in? Or does it leak out I planned to use a regular rubber tub stopper.

Hi. There is actually a pipe coming out of the bottom of the bath that we capped off with PVC that can be removed when we need to empty. That is what Stephen was doing when the water came out in the video. We put a plug in the top also just incase the pvc broke and the brick was to stop the cows from trying to eat the plug. I don't think they would put their head in that far though. Not sure they could hold their breath that long 🤔
