Great video! I personally have chosen the DIY Roxul panels for my home environment, but before that I used old moving blankets that I bought for 4 USD a blanket at my local hardware store. Right now I am working on a project where I’m building my own SM7B, I might document the creation, but only if it is successful.

Could hang those blankets in a reasonable sized cupboard/closet.

Great video,Aiden! Loved your use of Maker Pipe. Was not expecting orange for some reason. Loved the Pex clamp idea. Hadn’t tried that yet. The shim pieces that Mker Pipe offers so that a few other kinds of pipe ca fit the connectors, are actually just pex tubing as well. Loved that you created a mic boom

Build a less intrusive microphone stand for video. Maybe a boom pole for shotguns. Also a frame for putting blankets or foam behind monitors for streamers who live in rentals and can't damage walls of have a window behind their monitor.

I'm glad you did this for your friend. I mean, when I first saw this thought, "Why the Hell does he need a booth? Or, for that matter, with his pipes, he could probably replace his microphone with an old telephone handset and some bell wire." :)

@@DarkCornerStudios Not all that far fetched. When I worked at a radio station in St. Joseph, Michigan (like 50 years ago) the audio quality of the POTS line for a local intraexchange call -- the telco central office was two blocks away from the studio -- was almost as good as a class A line. If we wanted even better quality we'd just go through a Sony TC-110 with a set of alligator clips to the transmitter spades in the handset. Oh the things us ancient broadcasters could do with alligator clips and a Fiat oil filter wrench (for popping open glued handsets on pay phones).

This look great, and I can't wait to build one! However, one question: The parts list you posted doesn't seem to jibe with the little model you built; the parts list specifies 4 of the corner connectors, but you would actually need 8, right? 4 for the top of the frame and 4 for the bottom of the frame?

No wonder people use rolled denim, roxul, rockwool - other similar materials I guess - and build their own booths. Professionally made booths are absurdly expensive. $5K.. $8K.. It is just over the top. Even a PVC frame from vocalbooths to go is something like $700, and that is just for reverb, not any real level of sound proofing. Although a thick moving blanket may do a pretty decent job I'm glad I don't have to make that choice any more. I already own 6 actual acoustic blankets. Next time I build a booth I'm seriously considering going all out with 2x4, 2 sheets of drywall per wall, dense material between the walls, and of course treatment inside. One of the problems with a very basic blanket booth is there is no ventilation. Gets real stuffy and hot pretty quick. Also it offers almost zero "sound proofing" (because that isn't what they're made for). And it is the "sound proofing" that is so important. Yeah, you want to reduce or eliminate reverb, but that is useless if there are a lot of ambient noises.

What if instead of blanket we use douvet? In UK I can't find moving blankets like you in reasonable price but I can buy cheap douvet for £10. Douvet is also thicker, you can choose the 4-7-10-15 tog. If you set your Booth in the corner of the room, you need a loundry hanger on wheels to put douvet behind. Another douvet in the corner and it costs about £50. It doesn't look cool but it's on a very small budget!

@@DarkCornerStudios I thought Reflections can still possibly get through those blankets and possibly bounce off the metal and back into the mic 🤟 steel is cheaper though, and seems to be the easiest option to buy so might just grab a cheap portable wardrobe for £30 and use the pipes & connectors from that with some moving blankets on that, thanks man.

Nice work, Aiden. I ran the numbers to build my own PVC booth with acoustic blankets and the cost was only about $60 less than the Snap Studio - and I didn't have to measure and cut any pipe. With that said, I'm already finding that 3' x 3' is too small and want something larger. Building something with Maker Pipe might be the answer. Will have to price it out.

I have the same problem. Not a tools person. Nice video and great idea. Not for me though… I love my IsoVox2 + mic… which I mostly bought based on your glowing review of those! =D And yeah, even with the Røde I think the IsoVox sounds nicer here. You may call me prejudiced… =) I admit it did cost me some money, but I really think it was worth it: it instantly solved my @home studio’s ambient and neighbour noise problems. I’d be curious to know how much of my neighbours’ shouting and stomping up and down the stairs - and cars driving by - would be bounced by the DIY setup vs. the IsoVox. Admittedly, that issue was mostly why I went for sound isolation. I did apply some easy (no tools!) tinkering, though. Solved the inherent long(er) term breathing problem with a very cheap and very quiet USB powered ventilator which I suspended on a separate mic stand with rubber bands and a coat hanger, and directed (outside the IsoVox and from below) at my chest from a few feet in front of me, hence behind the mic, causing next to no added noise. Problem fixed: I can comfortably spend a complete, intense song session in my IsoVox without any breathing problems, thanks to this continual flow of fresh air. If you want, I can post pictures of my setup. Thanks for sharing this, I enjoyed the comparison! =)

@@seanwebb605 Seems an impediment. Perhaps being able to model a design before getting to the tool anxiety stage? The maker-pipe-minis are tiny plastic versions of the most common Maker Pipe fittings, with cocktail straws to simulate the metal conduit. The only tool needed is scissors.
