DIY Versatube RV Carport Shelter for High Northern Snow Loads
Join us as we embark on an exciting DIY journey to construct our very own RV carport! 🚐🔨
In this episode, we dive into the nitty-gritty of building a robust and weather-resistant shelter for our RV and other equipment. The structure measures 51 feet by 23 feet and is designed to withstand heavy snow loads of 90PSF. Here’s what you can expect:
🔹 Unwrapping & Preparing: We start off by unwrapping the building materials and discussing the completed groundwork, including the leveling of footings around a crucial shipping container.
🔹 Laying the Foundation: Watch as we meticulously set up base rails, ensuring they're level, and then prepare for ground anchors. We drill, pour concrete, and make sure our structure will stand strong against the wind.
🔹 Truss Assembly & Erection: The construction gets intense as we assemble and erect trusses. We use our trusty backhoe and ropes for precision placement - a task that tests our coordination and patience.
🔹 Securing the Structure: Our focus shifts to installing purlins and roofing. It's a challenging part of the project, requiring careful placement of sheet metal, but we manage to pull through!
🔹 Wrap-Up & Insights: We conclude with a tour of the completed carport, now housing our RV and other vehicles, and share insights on the choice of materials and design considerations.
We've packed this episode with practical tips, challenges faced, and the immense satisfaction of completing a large-scale DIY project. If you're into RVing, DIY projects, or just love a good construction story, this video is for you!

It was amazing to see that just the two of you could build that big structure yourselves, with just a small amount of help from Cait's Dad. Wish we'd been there again this summer to help. It did indeed look VERY rewarding! 🏆
Spray your roof panels with wax furniture polish it makes the snow come down easier. Nice job.
It will be so nice to have a place to safely park your RV. Well done! Are you "Yoopers?" We are former "Trolls!" 😀
Okay, I’m exhausted!!! Good job guys!
Why am I not surprised that you two tackled & accomplished this. People like you seem to be able to do anything. I’ve been able to do several projects on my 3500 ram thanks to you. Enjoy your carport.
The woods of Northern Michigan (the notorious UPPER PENINSULA) is so peaceful 🥳🥳🥳 I had a magical wedding on Mackinaw Island, grew up spending Summers up North ❤️🙏🏻✝️ Looking impressive amongst the pines 🥳

Sounds amazing, it is very peaceful there :)
Lots of work guys. I had no idea how far north you guy are. It gets really cold up there. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
I tell your story to other travelers and I always say that you are the couple to follow on the road. Man, you guys can fix anything / build anything. I would be happy to just be somewhere in your proximity so that if something happens I can shout out…Help!
Thanks for sharing!. Like 206
So good to see the working together.
Well I thought I left a comment on this video but I must not have hit the button LOL, Just Subsribed but have been watching off an on for a while when one would pop up. Started becase of your Bigfoot camper. Really like your channel. this video tell me that your new location is in the general location of a vacation we are planning for next summer to Copper Harbor area. we will be comming from lower Michigan and might return that way or go south though Wisconsin. I'm in Hope that you can give us some awesome Boondocking spots in the U.P. It's going to be a 10 day trip from central Indiana. Oh we have a POP UP truck Camper and a TT but will be in the Truck camper for this trip.
They do get a Lot of snow up there. We're on the south side of the Yoop and the past few winters I've raked and shoveled the roofs off of our porch, pole barn, and woodshed for fear of to much weight. This year I think will be a little lighter, but you never know with Superior.
Outstanding video! I'm considering a VersaTube building for northern Arizona at about 6,200 feet.
Good work Mortons!! You are amazing! Question: Where did you get the RV carport/building? Thx!

Yeah, weird that isn't mentioned anywhere and so many are asking about it.

@@gf3803 I wonder if they are happy with the process of purchasing and shipping and the end result? Well, maybe they will let us know......Maybe!!
😎🇺🇸👍 Awesome job you two 🔥✌️
You needed a telehandler, would have made it a little easier.
Next time look into renting a scissor lift. It's surprisingly affordable and makes getting up and down so much easier.
Always put the screws through the ridges, not the valley of the roofing panel. Then when your neoprene washers fail you have less chance of roof leaks.
Awesome video as always, what brand did you choose for the structure?
Looks like a versatube sweet I just got done building me one

Hope it helps, we went with these guys because they were the only ones who could meet our snow load in this style building.
What name brand of carport kit?
@gf3803

they obviously don't want to provide that information for some reason. But if you're interested in the camera gear they use..........
Not that's hard work! I always wonder if when you and others do these projects, did you know how to build? Engineer background? Or previous build? Or was it 100% new research? Glad to see you guys back on the tube.
Nice work on the build - but very hard work. Just curious why you chose the individual footings rather than forming a continuous footing on each side. Or the other option we had our carport was helical ground anchors drilled directly into earth. I really enjoy your videos - thanks! Kathy
how tall are your sidewalls? great job
where did you buy the kit? there is no links anywhere?
Most of the companies that I found online have bad reviews regarding shipping or other related aspects. What company did you use?
