DIY VAN BUILD MISTAKES.. what we regret and what we would change in our self converted campervan.

DIY Van build MISTAKES.. what we regret and what we would change in our self converted campervan.
Welcome to the first in our little mini series we are calling "A #vanlife cliche mini series"
Since we filmed our "travel costs" video and "how much it cost to convert our van" video we haven't really done anymore of these and, as we get an awful lot of questions about our van build we thought it was about time we updated our regulars and any newcomers on anything we've learnt now that we have traveled Europe a bit in our self built van, it's also nice to be able to update the van build playlist now we've used our van a lot more!
So this week we discuss our biggest van build regrets as well as talk a little about what we would do differently if building a van again, and, what we will probably change about our campervan build before setting off on our travels around Europe again!
As it isn't quite possible to travel freely just yet we have a few of these videos planned, such as "how we make money on the road", a full "van tour" and "our campervan electrical system explained and how good it is now we've tested it in all weathers". If there is anything else you would like to see that ties in with this van life series then just drop it in the comments section and we will always do our best to include it.
Meanwhile, we will still be making our travel vlogs as we attempt some sort of vanlife UK until we can get back to making a proper travel vlog series as and when we can get back to international travel and seeing how far we can drive in our tiny home on wheels!
As always thank you so much for watching and any like, subscribe or even a share is always much appreciated, see you on the next one!
Follow us on our journey as we attempt to create a proper KZread travel series as we travel across Europe, two female travelers in a van we built ourselves!.
Hit the subscribe button to see where our little tiny home on wheels takes us next and how we cope living in a van!

    Officially the best-produced Vlogs about van life, the quality is amazing again, just gets better and better, content is on point, actually worth a watch, gets us engaged, its not about you, the balance is perfect delivered with humour and humility. Keet them coming. Also noticed others pushing merchandise to the point its like Digital Begging, top marks for not being like that.

    😂🤣 Thank you, yeh merch and click bait title seem to be all the rage at the minute lol! We are lucky tho, it's not our main income so we can be free with what we do. We may do merch in the future as we often get asked but it will be subtly done I'm sure. Thanks so much, and thanks for appreciating the production, it's nice to know the effort doesn't go un noticed so it means a lot 😁😁👍

    No need to revamp the van because of the weight distribution and Emily's fears. Just install training wheels on the right side. You can hang them from a pivot so they swing out when Emily Schumacher leans the van too far to the right. 😁 Problem solved! 👌 Pleasant journeys and above all STAY SAFE! 🏁🚐❤️😷

    Lightweight panels can be easily made by getting some 1" x ½" softwood, make a square/rectangular frame and glue formica sheets on to it then fill with that spray foam stuff to fill in the void. Sturdy, functional and weighs very little.

    It is often said that people tend to get their perfect design on their 3rd conversion 😉. As far as the shower / toilet room goes, it's a massive decision and affects the whole layout and feeling of spaciousness....personally I would not build a van without one...but that's my preference....I do like to do my business with a door firmly shut 😂😂. For the fridge, Thetford do the 1090 which is designed to be raised up and is cut away to follow the contours of a panel Van conversion. They work pretty well. For solar panel installation on a boxer / relay / Ducato, Thule do a roof rail kit that spans the entire roof. You can then fit either roof bars side to side, or solar panels. The roof rail system is fully compatible with Thule awnings as well. We pretty much fit these to every conversion we do.

  • @campervibe

    @campervibe

    😂🤣 One more to go then and I should be done lol, oh no, wait I'm married, I'll never be finished lol!! I've looked at the roof rack you suggest and combined with the cost of the wind out awning you're soon way over a grand, for something which I hear is terrible in the wind and the rain, so I think I'll try and find an alternative, we will hardly use it to be honest, it's just for when staying on campsites. Thank you so much for watching 😁😁👍

  • @voyageadventurevans

    @voyageadventurevans

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@campervibe my van would never be finished either if it wasn't my business😉. You can fit the roof rails without an awning. I think they are about £300. We have made similar using aluminium profile but it's generally still better to buy the proper ones. Awnings are one of those things, that if you are travelling around a lot, they hardly get used. But quite nice for a bit of shade for the side door, or more likely in the UK...preventing the rain coming in😆😆.

    Ok, here is my idea, ;- I would do away with the cupboards above the bed, and turn the bed area into a huge (length ways) dining table/bench settee/bed area by reconfiguring to create a step-up platform (mezzanine) = this will create more space underneath for storage, the only slight downside is you will have to make the bed every night, but it means you have somewhere to lounge (liedown) or eat or to watch movies or open the back doors for scenic views + leaving the option for you to have two single or one double bed if you want to, I would also build some cupboards next to the toilet seat to house the fridge at waist height = overall weight will be redistributed a little. Also, why not buy some of those black 10 litre shower bags and fill with hot water from the kettle (create some slots at ceiling height to house them to have a hot shower?

    I’m now getting the impression that you thought you were done with the build. I love your build. I thought upgrades were eternal. Gradually making changes as you live in it. One change I’ve made to my plans is I’m putting a root drawer under my fridge so the fridge is higher. Bad back no knees. I want a wet room/bathroom/shower combo because I want to be able to hang wet clothes and not have to set up a shower. We all must build to our individual wants and needs. I will be living in mine full time with two cats when I retire so I need a few more creature comforts. Everyone else’s ‘mistakes’ help me with my build adjustments. Cheers from Canader eh!

    I built a full shower room and its been great. We don't use it much when we are away from services to save water but my shower room is heated from the diesel heater and it makes it ideal for drying wet towels and coats etc. The hot water comes from those small propane gas water heaters. Mine is fixed to the outside of the shower wall next to and cut into the worktop.

    You could replace the fridge with a dometic fridgebox on a slideout tray, much more energy efficient, you could get a bigger one, it has freeze compartment if you want, and it is loaded from the top. Regaridng the weight, I don't think it is as bad as it feels, and you don't stove heavy things in the overhead anyway. And finally for the shower, you could get a shower tray (store in the garage, strapped upside down under the bed), and put hooks for a curtain around the roof-vent then you ventilate out the steam, get a few inches better clearance above the head for people who didn't stand under the kitchen table whwn they grew up... (Em)

    I dont remember how many batteries you have, but that would be my first thing to move, ok, pain in the bum extending some of the cables, but its all out of sight so easier to do. then as someone else mentioned, move Emilys snack cupboard. we learn by our mistakes and hopefully someone else doing a build will now think about weight before building, its so easy to get carried away and not realise how heavy things are. Good to see AJ getting about a bit. Stay safe girls🌝

As far as the toilet goes, I had to empty ours today and it was so heavy, I could barely lift it! Hi Emily & Louise. Great video. Interesting comment on the fridge. I have seen some KZread videos where self builders have used chest freezers and converted them to fridges quite easily. The advantages are they are far better insulated and therefore use far less power as they come on less often. Also they do not lose cold air when the door is opened as the cold air drops to the bottom of the storage area as does not rise up when you open the lid. I saw one video when they attached door runners so they could slide it out to access and then push it back out of the way with the additional advantage that the top could be used as an additional kitchen work surface. You don't seem to have made many mistakes. Your van interior looks great. Good to see AJ with you on your travels. Best wishes.

Good ideas to note on camper van builds and things you would change, we had the same thing weight on all right side you don`t realise at the time of the build. Lovely to see handsome AJ. Installing a shower was on the top of the list when we started our build. Rommy couldn't imagine a camper without it. We use it also as a toilet room for our ( big 😉) removable toilet. So maybe you can combine the shower/bigger toilet also and save space. By the way, love your video's a lot!! Greetings from Sweden!

    Hi Ladys composting loo might be a thought for the future & also take it in turns to empty it ? If and when you get another van dual wheels on the back end gives you the extra weight plus stability can also get you out of the sticky stuff one day. Noticed a lot of self builders use a lot of timber so weights realy build up fast hence why a lot of campers use carpet linner to get around this heavy problem, cuboards up top are for lightweight cornflakes etc not tinned products think marine and get the centre of gravity low as possable at all times and lastly dont get fat or the weighbrige will show overweight Lol ! nice to see you happy & on the road again Ladys.

    Hi, We finished our conversion nearly a year ago and are at the same stage where we are thinking of some changes/additions that we want to make. Just to let you know if it helps at all, that we have got our solar panel mounted to the same roof rack as yours and also have a fiamma f45 awning using the standard ducato brackets. It all fits nicely with the normal ducato fitting kit - you shouldn't need special roof rack fixings. The awning mounts to the lugs on each end of the roof, and the solar panel on the 2 middle ones (can take pics if you want). We have a hidden shower tray under a false lift up floor in the side door entry. It was awkward to fit around the exhaust and slide out step, but managed to find a drain point. Thanks for your videos, we always find them helpful. We watched your videos when building ours and it helped us loads with the woodwork! Stevie and Mike 😊

    I highly recommend a separating toilet especially if you're planning more travels to Europe. Since we changed to our separating toilet we are off grid for so much longer. No more chemicals either which is great environmentally. Kildwick have a mini loo which we use and lasts for about 5 days. Don't have to keep finding the special places to empty and lots of places in Europe actually have septic tanks and the chemical loos do them know good. Been travelling full time for over 2 years and 20 years of motorhoming and 100 best thing we did was to get the separating loo. We are now environmentally friendly and much easier to stay off grid in Europe 👍👍😘

If you put the fridge up high above where aj sits and get the four corners weight I think it would be spot on, can’t beat a good rummage around in fancy 👍😂🇮🇪
