DIY TUTORIAL Portable Shade Structure for Sheep and Goats (Rotational Grazing Small Cattle)

SUPPLIES LIST FOR THIS SHEEP SHADE: bit.ly/PortShade
These portable shade structures for sheep were just what I needed to launch my rotational grazing program last summer! This shade structure DIY is also a low cost (cheep) option compared to most. These shade structures will also work well for goats. Make sure to properly anchor these shade structures. These shade structures can really be used for any small animals: dogs, cats, pets and more!
I hope you enjoy this tutorial!

No the tutorial I was looking for but the tutorial that I needed. These seem so much more practical than the wood frame shelters I was looking to build. Thank you!

We did this exact thing for our pigs last year. If you cut some 1/2" pex about 4" long and make a slit in it you can slide it over the cattle panels edge trapping the tarp under it which holds it on really well. Ours lasted all year!

I'd recommend canvas (what old tents are made from) because of how durable it is, its's a light color, and I feel like shade cloth has a lot of tiny holes to catch on things leading to tearing when being dragged across a field.

Ingenious. I don't have any goats yet. Doing research. We have steep slopes and I want to be able to move the shelter around the 5 acres by myself with no machinery. The stakes would also help keep the shelter from falling down the steep hill. Shade cloth great idea. Next I need to learn about the electric fencing that rolls up and can be moved. Do you know of resources that show more steep ravines? Our property is tricky.

Will work for sheep, not so much for goats. We have used this type of temporary structure for goats (and sheep) and because of goats' nature to climb on things, they destroyed all our efforts within 24 hours. :( Though tarps work well to provide shade, higher quality tightly woven ones do not dissipate heat well so it is important to place your tunnels in a way that they would get a cross draft if possible.

Do you think this could work will larger goats (like boar or larger meat goats)? It seems that a larger goat would be less likely to climb than the smaller and hyper Pygmy goat or Nigerian dwarfs

what if you also included a climbing toy for the goats inside the electric fencing? Or will the goats still destroy the shade tent?

Are you planning to use these again in the warmer months or do you have changes in mind? I've got 25 sheep on 11 acres but they congregate and rest under a single shade tree or their barn and I'd like to get them away from that on a rotation schedule, but this past summer in Texas was brutal.

  • @theShepherdess

Yes! These are still crucial to my rotation, but I replaced the tarp with UV proof shade cloth. It doesn’t catch the wind as bad and holds up under the sun exposure better. 👍🏻

I got a rather large charge out of the HOA comment, some HOA'S won't even allow a dog over 5 pounds, I doubt they would allow sheep, let alone a shelter made from blue tarps & cattle panels. Anyway, great idea !
