@@jamesrobertson3853 the overflow in each box is separate. The length (height) of which is lower than the height of the top of each box, set at the height you choose to have the water level in each box if there is a blockage. I know this is a late response but it may help others.

This was relaxing to watch. Love the handiwork. I do wonder however how much contact the water has with the media during the trickling? I thought some stagnation time would be required for the water to get the beneficial bacteria to do their work before it's returned to the tank.

Is it true that trickle filters don't need cleaning except for the pre filter since water is constantly trickling through the media, rinsing it continually. Loved your video and trickle bio filters are what I prefer over submerged filters. Thanks

Thank you very much Idle Wolf. We used Alfa Grog in the bottom container. Alfa grog is a porous foamed ceramic material, which is lightweight, strong and inert. It's high surface area makes it the natural choice for colonisation by micro organisms in biological filtration systems resulting in cleaner water.

great and precise job! i've some questions: - which kind of water needs to be filtered with that? from where is it coming from? - if all the small holes allow the water percolation through all the boxes (top-down), is not clear to me what is the scope of the central tube into each one... - is there an internal structure which support the high weight? being all the boxes filled with water + stones thank you! ;)

Hello Matteo, The water is coming from a indoor growing tank with high stock of Tosai. The middle pipes are emergency overflows and also helps provide more oxygen in the containers because this trickle is a closed one. These are reinforced stackable crates and can hold a lot of weight.

Great DIY. I am curious about UV light when use to disinfect fresh or marine water. Quote "Ultraviolet water purification is the most effective method for disinfecting bacteria from the water. Ultraviolet (UV) rays penetrate harmful pathogens in your home's water and destroy illness-causing microorganisms by attacking their genetic core (DNA)." from google. We are trying to grow and maintain nitrification bacteria but why use uv to sterilize?

Hello, very nice work! I have a question i hope you can help me: I have built a similar filter. I have used only one pipe to put the water in the Filter ( you have used u- shaped) In the pipe ( a straight one) are two rows with holes, right and left. The Problem is that the water comes only through one row of holes for example on the left side comes water through the holes and on the right side comes less water. Is the pump not strong enough? Or is the row on the side of the box where the water pumped up to small? My English is really bad i know, sorry for that😂 Whitch kind of pump do you have used? Thank you

  • @Tonikoi

    @Tonikoi

Yes the pump is too weak or the pipe and holes are to big. If you close half of the holes maybe it runs better or get a stronger pump.

What's the name of the drill bit that you use after making the holes at the bottom of the containers??

I didn’t get what you were doing after drilling the holes...it looked like a drill without a bit. What was the purpose of all that?

Thank you for your comment Eric. There is a lot of oxygen available for the aerobic bacteria to grow. The water parameters and disolved oxygen levels are perfect and the koi also growing very rapidly.

Thank you very much Ula Oglum Bune. The whole setup ( Containers, Pvc, HQ Filter Materials ) cost around $350 dollars. You can make it cheaper when you choose smaller containers and different filter materials.

Hello David. This filter is build in the Netherlands and all the materials are ordered there also. Maybe you can contact a local pond shop for more information about the seals and the filter materials. The bins are maybe available at USPlastic in the USA. Good Luck .. !!!

Isn't this flawed in that the intake pipe will eventually clog with detritus? The shower exit from the pipe at the top doesn't allow large chucks to leave the pipe. Maintenance must be a nightmare.

Very nice. Guess your water is pretty nice...and inside. If I understand, would not be good for outside unless filtering at pump in pond. I could see the top pipes with holes getting clogged. And wow...cleaning would be a beast. Nevertheless...very nice FP

What type of bit is that at 2:24? It looks like it adds a radius to the edge of the holes you just drilled. I must be naive, but I have never heard of that before.

Hello gpwnedable. Thank you for your question. The drill we used is a Counter Sink Drill. It smooths the edges of the holes what will result in a nicer finish.

Hello Simon, we used around 30 gallons of Alfa Grog in the bottom container, 15 gallons of Crystal Bio in the second container and another 15 gallons in the third container. In the top container we only used a Japanese mat. Google the names of the products and you will find prices and stores were you can buy them.
