At first I thought this wasn’t what I needed, now that I’m back and in need of help to make my own flange tires to conduct electricity to power homemade trains, I see how helpful this video is. THANK YOU!😊

Do you also use a 3d printer by any chance? Would one help you make certain parts of your wheels that don’t need to be made of metal easier?

Actually no, but I found a much easier way to get perfect wheels that cost nothing: top lids from soda cans. I am shooting these DIY videos as we speak. Will upload within days.

Making a wheel this way conform enough with gauge 1 (45mm) / G-scale track standards - or any other standard - to be operable in switches, takes a bit more than shown here. The back-to-back distance has to be correct, and I would say the back of the flange has to be flat to some degree. Flange depth comes into play as well. I'm guessing this is partickularly true if the flange profile is esentially just spheric, as opposed to more of a rounded wedge. As is shown, this wheel is unlikely to be operable on any standard track layout one might visit. If one decides just to run on one's own track, I'm guessing switches would have to be of the primitive "stub"-type, where both rails are moved to alternate tracks when switching. Or only using a turntable. It's back to railway technology before modern track and wheel designs had developed. Think "pre-Rocket-era" quarry operations in the 18th century.

It is thick-gauge galvanized steel wire. In hardware store it is sold in 8-ft or 12-ft rods. ~1/8 in diameter. Usually for hanging ceilings, probably the same thickness as a hanger. I paid $1.50 / rod.
