Thank you for joining us on this crazy journey! Our family- Kate and Marius plus our four kids, have always enjoyed living a homemade life whenever possible. Moving 1000miles north in 2017 to Northern BC, Canada upped our game even more. We live on a 34 acre homestead and get a kick out of things like raising our own meat, dairy and vegetables. Theres plenty of failures, you’ll be sure to see those here too. We’re a homeschooling family who believes life is the best teacher but we do hit the books in winter. You can find lots of real life confessions, recipes, how to’s and “The Schat Show”. Family health, natural health, cooking, natural food, whole food, recipes, parenting, kids, children, babies, faith, family life, work life balance, survival, wildcraft, keeping a family milk cow, home dairy, chickens, eggs, meat chickens, raising meat, raising pigs, fencing, dogs, cats, garden, gardening, winter gardening, short season gardening, northern living, life in winter, outdoor adventure, nature study, plant identification, rural living, food preparation, heating with wood, firewood, child training, homeschooling are all topics you will find here

Sorry, blame it on my the weird way my brain is wired, but when I read the title of your video, I started singing a parody of the Christmas song, "Oh Tannenbaum" but it turned into "Oh Tallow Balm"... Oy!!🙄😁😂🤣

Do you recommend a brand of tallow that’s better for making the balm and soaps that has less of a beefy smell?

I love my tallow balm I bought from you last year! It’s the best on my hands. Now I can make my own. 😊. Does any beef fat work, or should i try to get the cleanest I can find?

How long would the shelf life be and would heat extracting herbs also affect the shelf life? I’ve seen a lot of people make balms but I don’t know if we need preservatives.

Hey Kate, Would this work with deer fat? or is it too waxy?. Also... in this video you start from tallow, do you have a vid showing how you get from fat to tallow? I don’t know how to do the rendering.

@@VenisonforDinner YAY!!! Thanks so much for replying. I'm excited for next week's video about rendering the fat (and do you care if it's internal fat from around the organs, or fat from around the muscles?) and I'm off to find that candle tutorial for my deer fat. I had planned to do that before Christmas after you mentioned it during the deer processing vids, but didn't get around to it. Thank you!

Can I do this with bear fat? Edit: I'm a city slicker, I'm not sure what to do with 5 pound of bear fat I ordered online. My mother has psoriasis I'm looking for a natural remedy. I heard theres a lot of fish oils in bear fat. That should render some good lotion if I play my cards right, right? Thanks for your help and advice.

I personally wouldn't use bear fat, its more like pork lard, which is too greasy for a lotion IMO. I made candles with bear fat and they worked out great...

You want to use an oil that is liquid at room temperature. Avocado oil would work as would some others.
