DIY Steel and walnut wood patio chairs // MakeON

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The steel frame is made out of 20x1,5mm square tube and the wood slats were cut from 100x10x2500 boards of walnut Bahia (also knows as "abura").
Since these chairs are meant to be always outside the steel was treated with an antirust primer before being painted in charcoal grey and the wood was finished with 3 coats of marine water-based polyurethane (for high water and UV protection). All the hardware (self-drilling screws and adjustable feet with rubber caps) is stainless steel. They'll hold perfectly fine outside all year round.
These are a new version of another set I designed and build a few years ago. I loved that design and with some minor changes and tweaks to adjust for the different sizes of the materials and different finishes I was looking for, it was possible to roughly cut in half the weight and drastically improve comfort and convenience.

    Hi Jose, thank you, you too! I'm not sure which saw you are referring to but I'm guessing the miter saw... It's an Evolution Fury XL, with its own multipuropose blade to cut the steel and then with a CMT 60-tooth fine cut blade to cut the walnut.

    Hey man, what angles did u cut the leg frames at ?

  • @MakeOn

    @MakeOn

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Ti, both cuts for the armrest piece are at 50°, the leg has a 50° cut on the armrest side and an 80° cut on the "foot" side to bring it flat to the floor. You can also find all angles and lenghts in the spreadsheet available in the video description.

    Hi, I speak little to no Spanish, and the Gtranslator is not helping with the part of the question I'm not sure about... I'll try, though. The steel tubing is 20x20x1.5mm and the wood slats are 50x10mm, the seat height ends up being 430mm. I hope this answers your question.🙂

    So I’m American and I very stereotypically have a hard time converting metric measurements to standard measurements, but would this material be .75”x.050” square tubing?

  • @MakeOn

    @MakeOn

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey, I hear you! I've been in the US a thousand times and still can't wrap my head around very small fractions of inches... haha Anyway, yes .75"x.050" should work just fine, the difference is negligible.

    what settings was your mig machine set at to weld the chair

  • @MakeOn

    @MakeOn

    2 ай бұрын

    Settings may vary from machine to machine, depending on the machine itself, the wire used and the metal to weld. The best approach is either testing the welding on an off-cut or starting with relatively low settings and work your way up till you're happy with the weld. With thin walls it's easy to blow through the metal, if you're not careful.

    this does not look like a very comfortable chair.

  • @MakeOn

    @MakeOn

    Жыл бұрын

    On the contrary! But I guess it depends on what kind of chair you're looking for. This is the second set I've built from the same design I made back in 2014. Dozens of people have sat on them and found them more than comfortable enough for a dinner or just to hang out outside. Clearly it's not meant to be a living room recliner chair type of seat but I'd say it works great for what it was designed for. Try and build one for yourself, you'll be pleasantly surprised. ;)
