DIY Soil Testing on Our New Homestead
One of the things we did in the first couple weeks on our new homestead was test the soil with an at-home testing kit we found on Amazon (link below). We knew our soil was alive, based on the amount of earthworms and other creepy crawlies we found while pulling weeds, but we wanted to know if it was good quality soil. We have a ton of weeds in our pastures, and we want to produce better quality grasses for our future animals. We also wanted to test our future garden and orchard areas. The results were pretty surprising!

Some farmer friends all said it took about two years of soil mending before they could plant in ground! I’ve done soil test at UGA extension office. It’s a ton of help!
Your property is so big 🤩
Nice video! Thank you for sharing your test. I have been wanting to buy one, but the reviews were not very good on most, so I hadn't gotten one yet. Love seeing more of your property. It is very beautiful. My husband and I have 10 acres in Western Washington State. Ours is mostly woods though.

The instructions made it really easy, and clear to read the results. The hard part will be amending the soil to get it where it needs to be!
I’m excited to see how you amend it! It seems overwhelming to me!

There’s a co-op here that will supposedly spread lime on our pastures for us. So I’m sure that will help! As far as the garden area, I’m trying to decide if we should just do raised beds, or try to really amend the soil in that area. I like the idea and look of raised beds, but it will definitely be more expensive.
UGA extension also does soil testing if you want to compare your results. Georgia clay soils and all the rain we get are not forgiving, so I have to amend my soil pretty frequently also

Yah, I’m contemplating just doing raised beds for the garden area. I know the clay can be awful!
