DIY Slide Out Bike Rack for Truck Bed

There are multiple slide out bike racks on KZread, our version is customized for a truck bed to minimize the number of holes you need to drill into the aluminum bed. Instead of using wood for the drawer slides, we used aluminum, which required only 3 rivnuts per side. We also added a bike a stand for easier maintenance.

I'm going to completely steal this for my new truck build. Do you happen to know what length sliders you went with? I was thinking about the bike stand as well and awsome to someone else do it. Anything you'd do differently?

This is exactly what I’d like to do for my truck. How tall is the clearance from bed to topper? What size bike is the yeti? Thanks.

How do they fork mounts lock The axle? Surely you can just unscrew them from the side and take the bike?

Since the bikes are inside the contractor ARE cap which is locked, security is not an issue for us. If you are using Rocky Mounts on the outside you will have to attach them to your base using security bolts.

Thanks for posting the helpful video. I was thinking about orienting my handlebars in the same manner as you did with the bike on the right in the video. It looks like you mounted the RM fork mount on and angle to align the axle properly which is what I was thinking. How did you create the angle for the base of the fork mount? Has that worked out well. Thanks.

I used a Dremel w a wood cut bit that you could use to plunge-cut. Figured out how much you needed to plunge-cut the right edge relative to the left edge by turning the handlebars to the angle that i wanted and aligning the bike into a perpendicular position and then measuring how much the edge of the rocky mount base lifts up. That’s going to be your plunge depth on the right edge. Now it’s a matter of how to make that gradual from left to right. The way to that is to figure out the width of the bit and the length of the rocky mount base so you’ll know how many passes you’ll need to make to route out the area that will accommodate the base. If I remember correctly, I dropped the bit 1/16-1/8 every 4 or 5 passes and that was enough to make it gradual.

@@motorcitymuralserenade5327 Thanks very much for the helpful information. I’ve used my Dremel for a thousand different jobs but this is a new one. Will have to play around with. Like you, I had determined the way to figure up the angle of the base. I’m going to play with it this weekend. It surprises me more folks haven’t gone this route. It definitely makes for a much narrower overall footprint for the bikes. Can’t see a downside if you haven’t found some unforeseen issues in your use. Thanks again.

So I started building the tray today and loaded a bike in the check fit. I think you may have come to find the best way to support the Rocky Mount base. I was thinking I could cut a “ramp” on a bandsaw to get to the angle but after playing with it I think the way you recessed the base into the plywood was really smart and offered up the most support. I’ve never used my Dremel in this manner so I’m trying to make sure I follow your process if you don’t mind me bugging you one last time. I’m guessing you have a base for your Dremel that makes it operate like a router? Then you started shallow and progressively went deeper with each pass. The woodcutting bits are those toothed metal ones? Most of my Dremel work has been with metal or plastics. Thanks again. Kudos to you for this crafty solution. Oh, one other question…do you think the new angle for the fork mount puts any more stress on the thru axle? Those axles are solid when they go through a hub shell and anchor into fork legs but the Rocky Mount has more play to it than a fork. Noticed you’ve got a Mojo in your video. I’ve got a Mojo 3 and it’s my all time favorite bike. Will never let that one go! Thanks again.
