Heck, people in this area never ask if it's a 4x5 or 5x6 bale. In other words, I think the guys doing the small bales are coming out ahead because they're getting more per pound than the guys making huge 5x6 bales. When people price shop, they aren't looking at size for some odd reason.

When I sell my hay I just tell them the size and if they ask the weight I give them ball park. You can double your money producing squares but there’s more work involved and it’s a lot more work for a one man band like myself. Especially if you deliver your hay you sell. They most always will want you to unload and stack the hay in there barn.

@@CenTexAg I did one cutting of squares each year for 3 years because of all the horse people in my neighborhood. Bad droughts caused most of them to sell off horses and I sold off my square baler. Now they want me to start doing squares again - no thanks. I basically have 1 rancher that buys every bale I make. I had a one talk me into rebaling rounds into squares and I only did that one time. Not fun.

My Son's off the farm job is always selling things they don't need and just so happens they sold an electronic scale... about a 4x4 base..... Hardly ever gets used........ Our main customers are Trailer load purchasers.... they purchase by the bale and sell by the bale....The 1840 Hesston is fairly consistant on a 45 to 55 lb bale......Can you imagine the time required loading 46 rounds and weighing each bale???

Yeah that would take a lot of time! But I weighed three of the 79 bales off first cutting this year and just based the rest off that average. It’s really no different than loading 20 on a flat bed and driving over the scales

@@CenTexAg What if the customer only wants 1 918 lb bale?

I’ve never had a customer ask for a specific weight. The only ask how much they way and I always said average 800 lbs. Now I know a more accurate number plus I don’t have to spend fuel and time going across scales that are 30 to 45 minutes out of the way.

Cool setup. I use one of those hanging digital scales good for 2200#. I slap a couple of straps around the edges of the bale and pick it up with my loader. When I weighed my coastal round bales 5x6 out of my 567 and they were averaging 1825#. They were about 17% moisture so a little damper than normal. I'm curious on your scale, did you weigh yourself or anything else to see how accurate it was? Mine has been dead on, but yours looks much more useful.
