This is so helpful for us just starting out & for hobby breeders trying not to spend a ton of money. I was looking at glass beverage cooler setups, but now that I know I can do this with one of the many coolers my husband has in the shed.. that’ll be my go-to to start! Thank you so much!

Question. Could you cut a chunk of the lid out, put plexiglass, seal it, and be able to watch the eggs without opening the lid often? would it still contain heat well or do you think it would be best to leave it alone? I plan on breeding this year and it may be a dumb question but I'm very curious!

I was intimidated by the thought of fatally fudging up the heat tape, so I avoided making my own incubator until this year when I found a method I was far more familiar with. Instead of water bottles and heat tape, I use aquarium heaters and fill a small portion of the cooler with water a la Garrett's guide on Reach Out Reptiles. First time I've ever had such perfect humidity without fussing with the substrate at all. It could be worth covering this method for people who, like me, are still unsure of their ability to install tape. It also requires no duct tape, which--aside from my inclination to never allow tape within a 1 mile radius of bumbling hatchlings--will eventually unstick in a humid incubator.

I guess it would help if I read the other comments first lol. Seems I'm hardly the first to recommend Garrett's guide.

I feel that. Heat tape has always made me a bit nervous so it was nice to see how he put it together.
