The knife is better than my sheath, for sure. I might re-make it and go a little fancier...
Years ago I used a big dog treat to back a red elm bow I made. I put it in the tub for a week or so to soften it up and made glue from unflavored gelatin. I mix the gelatin really thick, brushed it onto the bow, laid the rawhide on it to set up for a while. Then I clamped the bow to a bed rail and put it in the shed for a few weeks, this was in August. Man that rawhide was TOUGH. I had to use a bench grinder to trim it to fit. Tough stuff for sure.

Here in Argentina rawhide sheaths are really popular for knives but we have a different style where you fold it around the knife and sew it on the middle instead of the sideleaving an ear to catch on your faja or waistbelt

I think I would rather hang out with that bunch than go to an Oscar party. Not that I would ever be invited to an Oscar party, but I've always found myself in the same pack as the outcasts anyway.
@ArizonaGhostriders
3 ай бұрын
Outcasts can be fun.
Next time, thin and lighten your dye with alcohol and brush it on like staining a gun stock rather than soaking the sheath. Also, your can rainproof the sheath using gunstock wax on the outside of the sheath. I'll suggest also using the gusset and riveting the top, point and belt loop (If you use one) to the sheath after stitching. (This will help keep your stitching tight) HTH.

@@ArizonaGhostriders A certain amount of artistry is involved. I saw a guy at the Old Mystic Seaport many years ago take a piece of square metal stock and heat it on a forge, got it glowing red and beat it into a harpoon with a round shaft. Took him about 20 mintues to do it and he made it look easy. Using a dog treat is amazing!

There is a band saw that is used in pipe and fab shops, you'll see em alot in shipyards, anyway, the worn out blades make awesome knives! That Spanish style lockback folder would've been very common in the old West, i can't think of the Spanish name but the French LeGoulle and Texas Toothpick are modeled off it but the Spanish one is huge! They kept it concealed in a sash around the waist. 😎👍🇺🇸🇺🇦 Aha! The Navaja! Huge, mean and deadly! A Spanish priest caught carrying one hidden in a red sash was put to death by Napoleon's French troops during the Peninsula War.

Very awesome, interestingly informative and inspiring video, I really liked and enjoyed it. great job and well done, I got a lot of inspiration for the old west/retrofuturism/Zelda and Backrooms inspired story/series I’m working on writing. I’m definitely going to be adding rawhide knife sheaths to my story and world that my series takes place in. The main weapons in my story’s world is old West/frontier and arctic gold rush era fire arms and fighting knives, there are also going to be some mythical ancient yet highly advanced weaponry in my story’s world as well.
