DIY Plate Reverb, but I used a GONG instead...

Yup, I took one of my gongs and turned it into plate reverb... Making a DIY plate reverb is actually pretty simple, you obviously don't need a gong, but hey, if you have one, why not use it! You could easily use a ride cymbal or anything else that is resonant, maybe even a drum? Either way, I think this thing sounds pretty slick!

Another gong
I want to hear a gong hi-hat played through the gong plate.

youd need a 3rd gong for that me thinks
My opinion is that John Bonham would have enjoyed the gong reverb sound.
Interesting. When I moved to Nashville in '82, I ended up working for a guy who had bought the rights to manufacture plate reverbs that were designed by Gene Lawson (of Lawson Microphones). We wound our own transducers and they were screwed to the plate. Our pickups were piezo, but they were about 5/8" by 1/8"; I can't remember how we mounted them. The plate was about 3'x7'. Our damper was made from square aluminum and we used fiberglass ceiling tiles as the damping material. It was attached with a piano hinge on the bottom and the top had a knob that screwed down so you could move it to adjust the amount of reverb. I know we had those plate reverbs in studios in Nashville, Dallas, and Miami.
Exactly why plug-ins are made. However I can't wait to make mine!

I guess, but for dummies like me that want the "real thing", this is a great solution! I've been on this for over a year, trying to find a method that actually seemed realistic.

The more I learn about the origins of many classic effects, the more I’m interested in either tracking down the vintage or making my own! The difference from plugins is a subtle one, but it seems to me with the physical units you can get a more organic, unpredictable result!

Ensuring the Reverb is "Gong but not Forgotten"
Ha, never thought of using the soldering iron in the holder and bringing the wires to it. Clever method.
Before the video starts I had a dream last night about using a gong as a plate reverb, I have a nickel small plate I built in the early 2000s but I found a huge 40 inch Gong cymbal at a pawn shop in Kingsport Tn that has just been sitting on the shelf for 2 years. So I came to youtube to see if anyone had tried this, well because its the internet someone did. so with some springs to hold it in place and a dampener I now have an idea!! THANKS!
I feel like Dave Grohl would approve of that 14×8. Holy moly.
Any chance of getting some IRs of the gong? I didn't like it all that much on drums, but it was pretty interesting on some of the other sources.

Please! I want to use this for my crushed lofi drum effect
I would LOVE an impulse response of this! Very cool!
Sounds cool as hell. And that snare is a beast.
So.. earlyer this week I watched some videos on diy plate reverb, and yesterday I had the idea of making one out of a gong, and here I am today watching this video.
this sounded like a Sean Lennon track especially when everything was ran through the gong plate.
Nailed that trippy 60s vibe!👊🏽✨✨
_Very_ cool! I'd say this particular plate reverb is better suited for the synths, Rhodes, vocals and similar instruments more so than drums but it did sound good on the snare. Still very, very cool.
Really brought the Rhodes to life
That snare is HOT FIRE!
Love the DYI projects you do! Always coming up with great ideas! 👍
Always enjoy seeing cool recording hacks and gadgets on your channel, David
Stopped listening to the gongverb near the end of the video to just enjoy that awesome jam
Interesting concept. I like the way it enhances some sounds and kinda tweaks others.
This really sounds great with the full mix
That's about the coolest dang build you've done so far.
The instruments sounded amazing. The snare thru the gong sounded like the St Anger snare lol
Wow, David that sounds amazing!!!! You're a very talented and smart guy. 👏
Incredible video as always. Love love love your content! Keep up the great work
Everything you put out is gold🥂
Ooooh that final jam track was amazing, I had some fun singing along to it!
Cool idea but it needs more clamps.
This is sick dood. The multi clamp rig is the star moment for me 💫
Damn that gong hat sounds crazy sweet
Wasn't ready for that sick instrumental stuff to come in. Could listen all day.
What if you'd mount springs (from spring reverb) inside a drum, would it work like an external spring reverb?
Great job, one of the best videos yet
Nice hack! To me, the Rhodes sounds the best with this gong reverb.
“…’A’ shirt”??? That is THE SHIRT hahah
So cool! Sounds industrial, especially with those hats
It sounds so good on the guitar and keys!!!
That snare is crazy
Excellent project.
Sounds great!
Having the reverb on the instruments really ties the track together...very groovy
Cool to see the physical version, vs done on a computer!
This is awesome, a friend of mine has a 28" sabian gong so now i need to try this
Cool! Fun to see you do an electronics project.
Sounds great on the Rhodes
This is awesome!!!. what a fun idea. Great video.
the plate reverb - resonance speaker hybrid we never knew we needed
This is super cool! You need to try this with like a thin crash or a trash splash
I have a porkpie 14X7 birch and mahogony shell and it just sounds killer
Run the synthguitar through the gong plate, instant king gizzard

A really beautiful sounding reverb in spite of its lack of flexibility.
Sounds great

Use the plate on the overhead only and then just take out the low. Use the aux return to taste.
I have a 22" ride cymbal that I use as plate reverb regularly.
nice work you're the best
BONZO WOULD LOVE YEPPP 😍😎🇬🇧🇺🇸
GIVE EM THE CLAMPS!
Man i miss the old videos
You did it!!! 😂
Man, this is so exciting! You gotta play a guitar through it! edit: or, perhaps, collab with some guitarist youtuber and let him play through it?
The rhodes sounded super cool through the plate reverb.
Finally a gong verb
It'll be very cool if we could get some impulse responses of the gongverb. Loved the vid
I like the g. Plate on the snare only.
"That was a little too small to really exite the gong..." So the gong is a size queen?😋
zzounds great on the rhodes and overheads
I can't wait to play live gigs again... I played one gig with my Crash of Doom, then shenanigans ensued worldwide... I do however have a killer plate reverb pedal I use with my bass rig
I have done this before; is really cool, even if not for every recording, but only you would make a video of it!
i would like a full version of the demo song w the synths and guitar pls
Dude, nevermind the piezo pickups... if you CRANK the input, these things sound awesome as a speaker!!!!
Love it
We came here for the beard. And we stayed here for the beard. But this video was really cool.
You may just have my clamp collection beat.
Very Spacehog's 'In the Meantime' Sound! Wonder if they did something similar? Very cool dude.
Cool! You should make a video where you record cymbals separately to drums.
Reminds me of 90’s DSP reverb.
Sounds like you’re playing in a bathroom. Nice effect for sure.
I would take this set up to every drive-thru in town! Only difference would be that I would talk through a megaphone!
I too like pate reverb.
Very Beatles/ELO, Awesome
Bring that beast to namm!!!!!
Sick
Hey David could you like capturr some IR's of this... Sounds cool
ok really cool idea. Strangely enough I have everything to do this project as i have been messing about with DML speaker mini guitar amp..basically a small guitar amp that has a rectangle of foam as a speaker...actually works, but extremely underwhelming unless you like no bass frequencies at all lol. just wondering about the daw side of things with the plate reverb..geussing could use an insert on the back of my audio interface with a splitter (TRS on one end going into insert on interface and on the other end of that cable the split ends would be 2 x TS unbalanced..Tip going into the amp and Sleeve coming out of the piezo) then use an insert plugin vst in the daw to compensate for latency?? I would wire a mono jack plug to the piezo.
Mit maximaler Geschwindigkeit klingt super, erinnert dann etwas an Oliver onions oder so
Bet this would sound sick if isolated to just the kick, very DNB!
WOW !!! keren habis brooo
I wonder what would happen if you replaced the shirt with a few moon gels?
Brought to you in conjunction with plaid shirts…
that snare tho
What are the specs on that gong? I'm 100% into trying this!
Now just run the gong through the gong reverb.
No drum mics thru the gong plate in the mix? -_-
Those club dates 😍

the floor tom head had started to rip at the seam too, still sounded great haha
Is the gong in the drum room? Plates were isolated back in the day
Whats that track u were drumming to¿ Would like to drum to it
