DIY Paper Clay Hamster Accessories

Hey everyone! 👋
Today I'll be showing you a really cool way to make your own fully customizable hamster accessories and hideouts using paper clay!
Hope you enjoy the video 😆! Paper clay instructions below ⬇️⬇️
~I spend a lot of time thinking of ideas that are as original as possible for my channel. Copying my recipe is cool with credit of course, but copying my creative content is not
✨ Paper clay instructions ✨
🐹 Ingredients:
-Boiling water
-Shredded paper with or without ink (the ink will come out once the water is soaked and drained)
-Flour
-Salt
-Glue
🐹 Utensils:
-Bowl
-Electric hand mixer
- Optional: strainer or an old kitchen towel
🐹 Instructions:
1. Pour boiling water over your desired amount of paper shreddings in a large bowl.
2. Let the paper soak for about 20 minutes until it becomes very mushy and soft.
3. Drain the paper (you can squish the water out using your hands, drain it in a strainer, or put the paper in an old kitchen towel and squeeze the water out) just make sure the paper is still pretty moist, but not completely saturated.
4. Use an electric hand mixer on medium speed to mush up the paper clay, creating paper pulp.
5. Add 1 part flour to 3 parts paper into the mix. This helps to absorb any excess water and makes the clay smooth. Add in about 2+ teaspoons of salt, just add bits as you think nessesary in order to keep the clay from molding. Then, add in your glue. Altogether I added about a 1/2 cup into my clay. The glue will harden the clay when you let it dry. Adjust the ingredients as you see fit!
6. You're done! 🥳

    Thank you so much! 🙂 You definitely should, feel free to lemme know how it goes! I would love to know what you make! The reason I didn't go in depth on how to make the cardboard structures was just because I know that not everyone will make the specific items I made. Its all customizable! For the mushrooms I basically made little cone shapes from cardboard and hot glued a thin cardboard tube to the underside of the cones in the center. Hopefully that can explain it a bit better.

    I have wood mushrooms that I can put in my hamster’s cage and I really want to paint them. I see that you are using the Apple paint brand and I have the same ones! I googled whether they are safe or not if a hamster chews it, and there were mixed reactions. Although, my hamster isn’t a big chewer but I would just want to make sure it’s completely safe before putting it in her cage. What do you think? (Without covering it with modge podge)

  • @Allthingshamster

    @Allthingshamster

    I use the Apple Barrel paint because it's water-based and nontoxic. So as long as your paint says the same, it's safe! 👍

    Hiii if I don’t put on the clay glue it will not be clay bc I don’t have glue ?

  • @Allthingshamster

    @Allthingshamster

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hmm, I'm not 100% sure if it will hold together without glue, but you could try making a really small batch of paper clay to see if it will hold. I think a no glue method could work if you make the paper pulp more wet, and then add in the correct amount of flour until it forms the right texture. I know you can make a sort of "glue" from water + flour. So in theory a slightly wetter mix with more flour could make the same paper clay without using glue. If that makes sense.... Hopefully this helped!

    Can I use food coloring to color the clay?

  • @Allthingshamster

    @Allthingshamster

    Unless it's natural food dye, unfortunately no. A lot of food colorings contain preservatives that aren't safe for hamsters to ingest. :)

  • @Allthingshamster

    You have to have enough water to cover the paper to soak it fully. Then, once you squeeze the water out, the paper should be damp but not sopping wet. It's very relative but I hope this helped.

    ⚠️if you’re hamster chews on it take it out⚠️ there is glue and salt in the mixture not good for hamsters to digest!

  • @Allthingshamster

    @Allthingshamster

    Жыл бұрын

    There's only a very tiny bit of salt in a large portion of clay. The glue is also non-toxic so if your hamster were to ingest a small amount they're going to be perfectly ok. If a hamster was chewing excessively on this then I'd take it out, but all the ingredients are not harmful. :) It's also unlikely a hamster would eat the clay. It's more likely they'd chew bits off yet not actually eat them.

    Is there an alternative for glue? And is glue safe?

  • @Allthingshamster

    @Allthingshamster

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm not sure the DIY would work without glue. As well as I'm not aware of any alternatives for it. The glue makes the clay smoother, binds it together, and helps to harden the piece through the drying process. Yet, you could try making a tiny batch without glue, and instead add a little extra water to achieve the correct consistency. I'm not 100% sure this would work though, as the paper clay requires glue to dry without crumbling. But it's worth a shot I guess! 😆 Non-toxic PVA glue, such as Elmer's glue, is perfectly safe for hamsters. If they ingest a tiny bit it will simply dissolve with no harm done. Paper clay isn't meant to be eaten, so if your hamster was to ingest a large amount the item would need to be removed. Yet, all the ingredients are safe if nibbled! Usually hamsters won't actually eat the paper clay but rather chew off bits and spit them out. Hope this answers your questions!

    Non-toxic doesn't mean safe for consumption! And, what's non-toxic for humans doesn't apply to all living things.

  • @Allthingshamster

    @Allthingshamster

    Ай бұрын

    These toys aren't for hamsters to consume. Using non-toxic glue just means if they chew on any items it won't do any damage. In addition, hamsters don't eat the things they chew on. They know the difference between food and non-food. If they didn't, they would've died out a long time ago. The hamster community in general is pretty strict with what is safe or unsafe for hamsters. Many hamster owners accept non-toxic glue to be fine for hamsters because we haven't observed any adverse effects. But, if you feel uncomfortable with using specific materials with your pet, then trust your gut. 👍
